Cotes du Rhone, 1970

Sichel & Fils

Côtes du Rhône is a huge appellation in the south of France encompassing 40,300 ha. Plenty of white and rosé wine is produced in Côtes du Rhône but there can be no doubt that red is king. Usually Grenache will dominate the blend (except in the north where Syrah is allowed to be top dog, but these wines are relatively few) and is normally partnered with Syrah and/or Mourvèdre but a further 18 varieties are also permitted! A cheerful example might be light, soft, fruity and easy-drinking, while the finest examples may be full-bodied, concentrated, intense, spicy and ageworthy. But what they all invariably have in common is a fabulous sense of place and lashings of personality and character.

Croft Port, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Croft Roeda Vintage port from the outstanding 1970 Vintage is a wonderful port scoring 91 points.

Reviews
A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now. Very fine.

Dalva, 1970

Vintage Port

Reviews

"Decanted out a pale rose colour and with a slight VA smell from a fair amount of fine, sludgy sediment.

Deepened in colour in the decanter to a deeper, distinctly brown, warm red. The VA has eased off and no longer dominates. Instead, the prime smell is of damp earth and cherry stones. Sour cherry juice initially in the mouth, lots of acidity - a little too much in all honesty - and some tannins still in the wine in a subdued sort of way. A decent amount of fruit, those sour cherries stay with you and are supported by some Granny Smith apples, a bit of golden syrup and a touch of grapefruit.

Delaforce Vintage Port, 1970

VINTAGE PORT

The nose has a slightly tawny, baked-earth edge to it, with aromas of spiced cedar wood, parma violets and sweet roasted meats. It is fresher than the wine's appearance would suggest. And the palate certainly has flesh at the beginning, and continuing through the middle, with a fair amount of structure still evident as well. In truth there are some attractive, perfumed elements to the flavour here, but also a lot of grip, and a slightly hot aspect to it as well. The finish is long, but a touch hot and fierce again. This is certainly a wine worth experiencing.

Dolcetto, 1970

Giordano

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Dow's Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Reviews:
Sweet, voluptuous bouquet. Coffee and cinnamon tastes. So beautifully balanced and elegant. Stunningly poised. A 1970 like this is sheer perfection and exactly what great, mature Vintage Port should be.
Serena Sutcliffe , CUISINE & WINE ASIA 2008 VOLUME 12
01/01/2008

“Exceptionally deep crimson with remarkably little evolution and few orangey hints. Very lively, even a hint of orange peel. Lots of concentration and life. Quite animal too. Very sweet and impressive with a great combination of richness and structure. This is serious wine with a serious future. Long and well balanced”.

Fonseca Port, 1970

Vintage Port (UK bottled)

An outstanding port from a classic vintage. The Fonseca 1970 is now fully mature, and is probably one of the finest glasses of port that you will ever taste. A wine of this quality will age superbly for many decades to come. A magnificent wine with abundant ripe fruit flavours and concentrated tannins. Perfect harmony and balance places this Port amongst the all-time greats.

Robert Parker, renowned critic writes of this Port.... "... it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports.

Gould Campbell Vintage Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Medium-deep but, interestingly, with more of a youthful purple tinge than the '75. Very sweet, fruity nose, slightly high-toned, tea-like. Fairly full on the palate, yet lean. Very flavoury. Michael Broadbent

Plenty of stuffing, with layers of elegant berry flavours and silky tannins. Deep ruby-red, with a blackberry and cherry nose, full-bodied, with medium tannins backng up a fine fruit structure, giving the wine an elegant backbone(James Suckling Vintage Year Book.)

Krohn Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Tasting note: Pale tawny colour with a broad amber rim. The nose has an attractive warm nutty character, notes of marzipan and walnut fusing with aromas of black coffee. Discreet musky animal notes give the wine a sensuous wild dimension. The palate is rich and mellow but lifted by an attractive zesty herbal finish. A beautifully mature Vintage Port ready for drinking now.

Martinez Vintage Port, 1970

Vintage Port (bottled by Gilby Vintners)

Review from AHB on the Port Forum

"Slightly darker than the Croft and slightly lighter than the Noval shown alongside this wine. Warm and spicy fruit on the nose, but quite faint. Good texture, with soft and orangey flavours hidden amongst lots of sweet strawberry. Tannins still showing gently with lively spiciness. Modest complexity, quite light bodied and acidic. Big aftertaste; long, lively and spicy finish. A wine to be drunk rather than kept. 85/100. Drunk 15 July 2010."

Merlot, 1970

Colli di Brione

Merlot can also produce a delightful and intriguing pure varietal wine. While Merlot has a long history of use as a blending wine, pure Merlot wines have been relatively slow in gaining momentum in Italy. That too has changed and today some of the world’s best Merlot wines bear Italian labels. The Trentino wine is from well-positioned and carefully maintained hillside vineyards near the city of Trento in northeastern Italy.

Montepulciano, 1970

d'Abruzzo, Ferliga Cantine del Tronto

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,
