Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

Pelaverga vine is certainly a native of Saluzzo. In the Turin area it is known as synonymous with Cari. Pelaverga vine was then introduced in the town of Verduno in the 17th century by Beato Sebastiano Valfrè, who got some vine plants grown in the Saluzzo area. The vine, due to the scarse production among other characteristics, seemed doomed to disappear. From the outstanding 1970 vintage. The colour is more tawny than red, and fairly light. It gives the distinct impression of a very old, very mature vintage Port.
The nose gives a strong impression of honey and is followed by sweet grapes and soft red fruits. Very slightly spirity, but not so much that it interferes. This all changes after 5 hours as the honey and fruits nearly vanish and the nose became spirity.
Palate: Very soft and elegant with a very faint smokey note. There's more "sweet" to it than anything else, but it's not a pure sugary sweetness but rather the remains of a sweet fruit compote. …
