Grahams Port Bonds

It has long been a tradition for special occasions to be marked by the laying down of vintage port from the year of the event. Problematically, due to the fact that a vintage year is normally only declared in the second year after the harvest, the recipient of the gift often has to remain empty handed until sometime after the celebration.

Graham's are the first port company to overcome this problem,

Grahams Port Bonds

Vintage Port is the traditional gift for marking special family occasions, particularly the birth of a child. Vintage Port has an extraordinary ability to age gracefully for 75 years or more, developing from a structured, powerful and robust young wine into a sophisticated and elegant wine in middle age and then on to a delicate and ethereal beauty that will continue for decades.

Graham's Port, 2002

20 Year Old Tawny Port 20cl small bottle

Graham's represents superlative quality. Its principal attributes are great complexity and harmony. With an amber, golden tawny colour, denoting considerable age, the 20 year old has an excellent bouquet, with a characteristic 'nutty' character (almonds) and delicious mature fruit with hints of orange peel, exquisitely mellowed by careful ageing. Rich, sweet and smooth on the palate, it is perfectly balanced, with a long and lingering finish. This is an excellent alternative to Vintage Port at less formal occasions and will keep for some weeks after opening.

Graham's 20 Years Old pairs extremely well with nuts, dried fruits and fruitcake, but is also delicious as an accompaniment to vanilla ice cream or creme brulee.

Dow's Port, 1985

Vintage Port

"Drinking beautifully now at early optimal maturity, this has at least another few years of development in front of it and many years of drinking pleasure after that. Now it is nicely developed, well integrated, juicy and ripe with a nice balance between its power, weight, and texture; it is succulent but still elegant. Delicious. Really excellent." Chateau Palmer, 1972

Margaux 3rd Growth Classification

An icon of the Margaux appellation, immediately recognisable by its midnight blue label and its inimitable velvet taste, Château Palmer has illustrated itself, over the course of its history, by a sound obsession: to carry its wines further on in their expression of the nuances of a great terroir.

Taylor's Port, 1972

New

Quinta De Vargellas Vintage Port High shoulder level - very damaged label - vintage legible - re-waxed

A rare vintage port from 1972.

Little Vintage Port was made in 1972 - the weather having made life unusually tricky. Taylor's - the masters of wine-making - produced a rather fine single quinta wine in the Quinta de Vargellas 1972. Mellow and pale, nose of spiced rose petals, palate of raspberries and dried red berries it is a delicious glassful.

Nebbiolo D'Alba, 1970

Caluè - Diano d'Alba

The Nebbiolo d'Alba has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavoured wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Barolo, 1969

Giovanni Scanavino *** Highly Recommended ***

This bottle of Giovanni Scanavino from the good 1969 wine vintage has a hazy brick-mahogany colour. Initial notes of tobacco, manure, porcini mushrooms and black truffles. Bloomed with air into a lovely bouquet of red cherries, roses, tar, leather, spice, cedar and stony soil. Similar on the palate, seamless, balanced, beautiful acidity and smooth tannins. Got better and better with air, last sip was the best.

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1969

Pauillac, 1er Grand Cru classe
Very Top Shoulder

Lovely colour, mature but lively appearance; clean nose, lovely vinous warmth, cassis and cedar and mint, classic Pauillac; lovely and lively palate, cassis flavours, complete for a 1969, lively acidity in check; clean and dry finish, good length. Much better than the bottle from the same cellar tasted ten years ago. Rating applies to the first 15 minutes after opening, loses its definition very quickly after that.

Barolo, 1967

La Morra, Riserva

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Bordeaux, 1967

Mouton-Cadet, Philippe Rothschild

A classic Bordeaux nose, with tobacco, soil and meat floating around a core of dark plums and cherry aromas. The palate is still just on the right side of drinking nicely, with decent acidity keeping its pleasant, albeit rather simple flavours of cassis and plums rather fresh and lively. A good finish with tones of plum and cherries.

Bordeaux, 1967

Schroder & Constans

Bordeaux, in the south-west of France, needs little introduction to anyone with an interest in wine. One of the world's most prolific wine regions, it also manages to rank among the most famous and prestigious. The secrets of Bordeaux's wine success (other than magical Bordeaux Blend) are its three trump cards: diversity, quality and quantity. The majority of Bordeaux wines are the dry, medium-bodied reds that made the region famous.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1967

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (high shoulder)

Appropriately, the bottles for each vintage, of this first-growth Bordeaux, have been adorned by labels created by the world's great artists since 1945. The 1967 is a collectors item.

The 1967 Mouton has on the nose "Plum, Wild Berry, Leather, Library Books and Spice. Palate: Very nice density for its age with an elegant approach. Very silky and well resolved palate that offered fading fruit of black cherry and plum with nice but muted secondary notes of leather, tobacco and some sweet herbs.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1964

Pauillac Premiere Grand Cru Classe (Henry Moore label)

Reviews ....
"pretty good cork was in beautiful shape. Color was brick red and showed nice tart cherries and fresh earthy aromas. The flavor profile showed reasonable concentration and while a bit earthy and a tad acidic, was full of dried red fruits and wonderful spices. While tannins were fully resolved the acid kept this reasonably fresh and inviting. A nice long rustic earthy finish kept me coming back for more."
