1980 D' Oliveiras Madeira, 1980
Boal Madeira
Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter.
Medium orange amber color with 1 millimeter clear meniscus; appealing, light coffee, almond, reminiscent of Moroccan bastilla on the nose with a hint of passion fruit; tight, silky textured, tasty, balanced, rounded, tart orange, tart passion fruit palate with a vague sense of light salt; long finish.

1980 Porta dos Cavaleiros, 1980

Porta dos Cavaleiros, Dao
Special Offer Was £69 | Now £49
Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character, …

Blandys Madeira, 1980
Terrantez Madeira 37.5cl HALF BOTTLE
Includes Own Box
Blandy’s Terrantez 1980
Review bySarah Ahmed "The Wine Detective". "I’m a huge Terrantez fan and this one ticks all the right boxes. Smooth on the nose with a smooze of light caramel and sweet café crème. A lick of tobacco herbality – greener – lends appetising lift. The saliva glands are at work already! And so it is in the mouth – almost creamy on entry, yet penetrating too thanks to its lively, very persistent backbone of acidity. Delicate staccato spices and a lick of toffee apple seduce. That bottled electricity, v.a. accelerant fires up a super long, reverberating finish, its delicious woody, mellow timbre deftly leavened by that light, herbal riff. …

Vintage Port
Bin Soiled Labels | Was £119 |Now £99
The 1980 Dows Vintage Port has a very dark red/black centre, dark red to brown rim. On the nose there are creamy, blackberries and black cherries, slightly herbal notes (good), smoke and wet stone, sweet. The Dow 1980 has a very complex palate, maturity, red currants and black cherries, herbs and smoked meats, in the middle acidity and tannin (still!), great length - 60 seconds plus of blackberries and plums. This is an extraordinary Dow.

Fonseca Port, 1980
Vintage Port
The Fonseca 1980 Vintage Port is a rich ruby colour, fading gently at the rim. Scents of spice, raisin and fruit cake. Soft, sweet and ever so slightly plump.
Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. It excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavours. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. …

Graham's Port, 1980
Vintage Port
Purple fading to red and finally pink at the rim. Rich blackberries on the nose along with very faint stewed strawberries. The tannins were powerful on Christmas day but mellowed some by the next evening. The blackberries carried through as a prominent flavor, but added a sourish note almost like a sour cherry. The finish starts out with a rich butter cookie note, but then quickly switches to grape stem.

Review:
With amber colour and golden hints this wine has an intense bouquet, dominated by the remarkable presence of the dried fruits with a refined touch of spices. In the mouth it is concentrated, firm and elegant. This wine of great deepness and with a noble character has an impressive and persistent finish. …

Sandeman Vintage Port, 1980
Vintage Port
bin-soiled and damaged labels | vintage legible
“Due to the richness in colour intense fruit flavour and its impressive finish, Sandeman 1980 promises to be a wine of considerable character when mature. The 1980 should as was the 1960, be at maturity sooner rather than later” (David Sandeman).
A slight menthol note here. The nose is very rich, perhaps a touch chemical. Nice weight on the palate – chewy, with good dimension. Good balance and finish.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1979
Quinta da Cavadinha
The 1979 Vintage Port from Warre's is seriously attractive. After 4 hours of decanting, it had opened up nicely with lots of fig-like fruits. The palate is rich and infused with age elements with a soft and rich fruit still well to the fore. The fruit is enjoying a late middle to early old age period. No need to drink up yet but age elements will begin to dominate from here on in. If you want fruit then drink now. A fine example of a well aged single-quinta port with a deft Warre's touch of assured wine making showing through the full thirty years from 1979.

Baron de Sigognac, 1978
Bas Armagnac (Comes in original wooden gift box as illustrated)
The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.
Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in original wooden box.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1978
Vintage Port
Reviews: Roy Hersh - For the love of Port.
The 1978 Quinta do Noval Nacional - exhibits a rather light ruby hue and offered a generous nose full of dates, raisins and a roasted coffee note that was most appealing. The flavours showed figs and currants with a backdrop of blueberry that lingered long on the palate. This was a youthful if not truly immature wine that needs lots more time in decanter or better yet, in cellar to reach its fruition.
