Chateau Haut Brion, 1978

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

***90 Points, Robert Parker***

As this wine has developed, it has taken on a pronounced roasted, melted asphalt/tar-scented nose that in some ways is the essence of Graves, but it seems strikingly devoid of some of the other nuances so common in Haut-Brion. The wine is fully mature, with a deep garnet color, and a pronounced asphalt-scented nose. This impression is verified in the mouth, where the wine reveals a lot of smokiness, tar, and sweet black fruit flavors. This surprisingly evolved wine has been fully mature for a decade or more.

Chateau Labegorce, 1978

Margaux, cru bourgeois

Scoring 90+ points on Cellar Tracker. The 1978 chateau Labegorce is recommended for the vintage.

Reviews:
"The nose is vibrant and seductive with kirschy notes, wild strawberries, cherry gaspacho, autumn forest leaves and earthy cocoa. All this flows perfectly in your mouth with a charming acidity (yes there is still acidity) triggering a symphony of red and black fruits, truffle, salty plums, forest moss, wet leather, spice, etc. wrapped in an elegant velvety texture. A must try if you can still find it." Cellar Tracker review 2015..

Kopke Port, 1978

Colheita Port (presented in a Kopke box)

***94 Points- Mark Squires, eRobertParker.com 23 March 2016***

Review:
The 1978 Kopke Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with 119 grams per litre of residual sugar and a bar top cork (typical for the house). It is very graceful for its age, finishing with a wave of sweetness, fruit and sugar. Emphasizing the caramel more than the molasses, this is irresistibly delicious, but it becomes more complex and puts on weight as it airs and warms. The wine shows off its power and hints of Brandy on the rather tense finish, too. Overall, this is a beauty that becomes more impressive the longer you sit with it.

Porto Feist, 1978

Vintage port

This Port House was founded in London by two German cousins H. and C.J. Feist in 1836 and opened up in Oporto 1870. Carl Feist left the management in Porto to his son-in-law J.H. Speich in 1921. Barros took over the house in 1953 and was then bought by Sogevinus in 2006.

Reviews:
Yellow mature in colour. On the nose there are notes of berry and roasted coffee. Sweet with flavours of ginger bread, a medium body and a nice and elegant finish.

1977 D'Oliveiras Madeira

Terrantez Madeira with solid oak gift box with silk liner.

"Light medium orange amber color with yellow to clear meniscus and light orange lights; nice, nut oil, melted butter, lightly floral, toasted almond, rich toffee nose; tasty, youthful but poised and complex, toasty, almond, rich lemon, tart orange palate with depth and a very long finish.
*Bottled in 2015*

Terrantez is a near-extinct white-wine variety from the Portuguese island of Madeira, in the eastern Atlantic. It is most likely that the variety was taken to the volcanic archipelago from the Portuguese mainland by early explorers. The 1795 vintage saw a prolific output of long-lived Madeira Terrantez wines, a number of which have survived into the 21st Century.

Croft Port, 1977

Vintage Port

With a red brick colour turning to amber on the rim the 1977 Croft reveals a seductive, ripe and complex nose with undertones of rich jammy and figgy fruit. There is fine caramel and exotic notes of cedar wood and spice. A superb fruit driven Vintage Port, true to the tradition of this ancient Pinhão Valley estate.

A clear claret/garnet core. The nose is ripe and attractive, but lacking the complexity of say, Taylors ’77 for example. Hints of cherry, brambly red-berried fruit, ginger and honey, though improving with time in glass as more blackberry leaf element begin to appear. The palate is sweet,

Dow's Port, 1977

Vintage Port

Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened. The acidity was near perfect and the tannins are tame but omnipresent; while the finish was spicy, warm and extremely long.

Gould Campbell Vintage Ports are very good indeed, and in vintages like 1983 and 1977 they can be outstanding. A fine port with long lingering finish that is ready for drinking now but, obviously as with all great ports, has many years ahead of it.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1977

Vintage Port

Rich and highly concentrated, it has evolved into to open into a superb Port. Fragrant cassis and prunes nose, fleshy texture, loaded with ripe berry flavours, mellow tannins and a lush fruity finish. Powerful, yet impressively balanced. The 1977s have reached the middle stage of what will prove to be a long and distinguished life. Hugely enjoyable now and it will only get better.

Reviews
"This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavourful vintage port. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style.

Chateau Yquem, 1976

Sauternes, 1st Growth Classification

Yquem is without doubt, one of the world's finest wine producers, of whom Robert Parker comments: "There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend."

"The 1976 Yquem continues to go from strength to strength. Who can ignore the awesome bouquet of spices, honeyed fruit, pineapples, bananas, coconuts, and overripe melons? This full-bodied, viscous, luscious wine has been absolutely delicious since bottling, given its relatively low acidity and precocious personality.

Fonseca Port, 1976

Guimaraens Vintage Port

REVIEWS:
1976 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port - The color of this was amazing dark, being solid black with a tawny colored rim around the outside. I can’t ever remember seeing a color like this on this old VP. The nose was very gummy and thick with a floral aspect similar to the elderberry flower. Very reducted on the palate with thick tar, raisins, and green stems. Yet it was still tannic at the same time. The finish was moderate with a rich mint aspect to it. While good in its own right, served blind this could have easily been mistaken for a lighter style PX Sherry. An extremely dry winter was followed by a hot summer causing springs and wells to dry up for the first time in living memory.
