Pinot Noir, Rita Hills, Santa Barbara

Garnet red colour bricking at the edges. Garnet-brick red. Jasmine tea and scorched earth on the nose. Tart cranberry and bitter orange zest flavours. Finishes a bit hot. Nice silky texture and dusty tannins. Now fully mature, this wine would not benefit from further ageing.

Chateau Latour, 1997

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 90 Points Robert Parker ***

"The 1997 Latour will be a surprisingly fine wine, as well as one of the longest lived offerings of the vintage. It possesses lots of tannin and depth, along with medium to full body, and a textured, multidimensional personality. Sweet, jammy fruit is intertwined with dried herbs, coffee, and earth in this saturated ruby/purple-colored wine. The finish lasts for 20 seconds, a positive sign for a 1997. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 1999

Merlot, 1991

Lison - S. Margherita

Merlot can also produce a delightful and intriguing pure varietal wine. While Merlot has a long history of use as a blending wine, pure Merlot wines have been relatively slow in gaining momentum in Italy. That too has changed and today some of the world’s best Merlot wines bear Italian labels.

Barbaresco, 1988

Marchesi Cristoforo Frascari

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Barolo, 1988

Bersano

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Janneau, 1987

Armagnac 1987 Vintage (Includes presentation box as shown)

The great vintages or millésimés of Janneau are the expression of a single year, most commonly of a single cask. Produced exclusively with the single distillation process, they are the quintessence of this precious distillate aged over the years. Each vintage expresses its unique character. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a sharp contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish.

Fonseca Port, 1985

Vintage Port
perfect provenance | released from the Fonseca cellars in Porto.

Excellent Provenance. These bottles of Fonseca 1985 Vintage Port have been shipped straight from Fonseca's Cellars in Oporto to our cellars in Fordingbridge. They are in perfect condition.

The 1985 Fonseca Vintage Port has a lovely nose of maturing port, finely styled and just screaming quality. The palate carries a svelte texture, with a creamy, flattering character. There is purity, balance, a clean, bright quality and despite this lots of appealing grip. This has great impact, and yet is so welcoming and alluring. Excellent wine, and a great example of the vintage. (November 2006).

Dense ruby/purple with the Oriental spice-box aroma,

Chateau Montbrun, 1984

Margaux

Brick rim with a light brick red core. Initially the nose was fresh and very sweet. Then developing in the glass with notes of liquorice, caramel and increasing acidity, which eventually breaks down the nose. The palate is still surprisingly fresh. This must have been very attractive in the 1980's. Growing old gracefully and still drinking well.

Dolcetto d'Alba, 1983

Conterno Fantino

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

1982 Porta dos Cavaleiros, 1982

Porta dos Cavaleiros, Dao Red Wine
Library Release
Bin soiled labels, vintage legible

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Chateau Yquem, 1982

Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe
Sweet White Wine

92 Points, Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate, 26th Jun 2014

Served from an ex-chateau bottle. Sauternes only produced two exceptional wines in 1982: Suduiraut and Yquem. Although I have encountered the 1982 Chateau d’Yquem on three occasions, this is the finest bottle. It was an early vintage, physiological ripeness reached on September 16. Rainfall interrupted the harvest that really could not start in earnest until November 2, for just four days. It has a lucid amber color, and a fully mature bouquet with mandarin and marmalade aromas that are pure and well-delineated. Yes, there is a sense of conservatism here, yet you cannot but help be seduced by its exquisite balance and linearity.

Quinta da Devesa, 1982

40+ year old Tawny Port (75cl)
94 Points - Robert Parker

Tasting Notes:

The NV +40 Year Old Tawny Porto is a field blend bottled in 2014 with 114 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Personally, I like the 30 slightly more, but there are some stylistic differences and they are both very fine. The 30 is livelier and crisper. However, this +40 is distinguished by that "+." About 5% to 10% of the juice is from the 1944. That adds a layer of mahogany and molasses that the 30 does not have. I like them both a lot. Pick your nectar.

Chateau Yquem, 1979

Sauternes, 1st Growth Classification
Sweet White Wine

Yquem is without doubt, one of the world's finest wine producers, of whom Robert Parker comments: "There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend."

The 1979 Yquem continues to go from strength to strength. Who can ignore the awesome bouquet of spices, honeyed fruit and pineapples This full-bodied, viscous, luscious wine has been absolutely delicious since bottling, given its relatively low acidity and precocious personality.
