Barbera del Monferrato, 1977

G. Troglia

Barbera is a wine of prestige, rich colors that refer generally to the ruby purple, just what clothes cardinals; the bouquet is ample and composite, with fruity notes of blackberry, cherry, strawberry and red fruit jam and spicy aromas reminiscent of cinnamon, vanilla, green pepper.

Barbera del Monferrato, 1977

Livio Pavese

This 1977 Barbera del Monferrato has a deep ruby hue and a bouquet of ripe plum and cherries, often piqued by a hint of black pepper. Barbera-based wines are known for retaining a balanced acidity even in warmer vintages, making them an ideal partner to tomato-based dishes. These wines are lower in tannin, making them more approachable in their early years. Barbera from Monferrato differs from that made in Asti or Alba in both its provenance and style. Where Alba and Asti produce strongly structured wines, their Monferrato equivalents are more aromatic and often a little less robust.

Dolcetto, 1977

d'Ovada, Terre del Dolcetto

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant.

Vecchio Maniero, 1976

Marchesi di Barolo

This wine from the good 1974 vintage is made with the long lived Nebbiolo grape. this is a black-skinned red wine grape variety most famous for creating the 'tar and roses' scent of Barolo wines from Piedmont, north-western Italy. The grape's very name is evocative of its home among the misty foothills of the western Alps; the nebbia (Italian for 'fog') after which it is named frequently arrives on early October mornings, when the Nebbiolo harvest is in full swing.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1972

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
Magnum 1.5 lt
(high shoulder - labels very bin soiled)

A rare magnum bottle - Wassily Kandinsky label

Reviews: Stands up well for a 72. This had a deep red-brown color that was consistent throughout. It showed an intense nose of fresh asparagus which carried into the palate where it was joined by notes of celery. This exceeded expectations and was surprising drinkable for the amount of greenness it had. The half-bottle leftover the next day lost a lot of the asparagus/celery notes, having them replaced by some bell pepper and hints of cabernet fruit (cassis). One for the collectors. Eiswein, 1972

Fred Pieroth Binger Bubenstud Eiswein Auslese

This 1972 Eiswein Auslese is very developed, powerful and quite tertiary nose with aromas of bruised apples, dried stone fruits, some golden raisins, a little bit of burnt sugar and a hint honeyed floral character. The wine is intense, acidic, moderately full-bodied and quite oily on the palate with pretty sweet flavors of pronounced golden raisins, some apple jam, a little bit of oxidative nuttiness, a hint of molasses and a touch of dried apricot. The high acidity makes the wine quite structured and keeps the sweetness at bay. The finish is quite developed and rather oxidative with long flavours.

1971 Barolo, 1971

Marchesi di Barolo

This Marchesi de Barolo from the outstanding 1971 wine vintage is considered to be one of the finest types of wine in the world and is often referred to as 'the King of wines'.

Reviews: "The wine has a clear, pale intensity, garnet-brown colour. The nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of grilled herbs, sweet tea leaves, earth, hints of cherry fruit. With more air, classic roses and tar, which then faded to reveal truffles after an hour plus. On the palate, dry, high acidity, resolved medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, sweet tea leaves, slight red cherries, grilled herbs, and eventually truffles.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1969

Pauillac, 1er Grand Cru classe
Very Top Shoulder

Lovely colour, mature but lively appearance; clean nose, lovely vinous warmth, cassis and cedar and mint, classic Pauillac; lovely and lively palate, cassis flavours, complete for a 1969, lively acidity in check; clean and dry finish, good length. Much better than the bottle from the same cellar tasted ten years ago. Rating applies to the first 15 minutes after opening, loses its definition very quickly after that.

Vespolina, 1969

Berteletti - Castello di Lozzolo - Riserva

Vespolina is a red Italian wine grape variety that is planted in Piedmont around Gattinara. Ampelographer believe that the grape is most likely indigenous to this area of Piedmont and recent DNA profiling identified a parent-offspring relationship with Nebbiolo.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1967

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (high shoulder)

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, one of the most famous wines in the world! A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Appropriately, the bottles for each vintage, of this first-growth Bordeaux, have been adorned by labels created by the world's great artists since 1945. The 1967 is a collectors item.

The 1967 Mouton has on the nose "Plum, Wild Berry, Leather, Library Books and Spice. Palate: Very nice density for its age with an elegant approach. Very silky and well resolved palate that offered fading fruit of black cherry and plum with nice but muted secondary notes of leather, tobacco and some sweet herbs.

Spanna, 1967

Cantine Sociale del Colli Novaresi

Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins.

Bordeaux, 1966

Louis Beaussinot

Bordeaux, in the south-west of France, needs little introduction to anyone with an interest in wine. One of the world's most prolific wine regions, it also manages to rank among the most famous and prestigious. The secrets of Bordeaux's wine success (other than magical Bordeaux Blend) are its three trump cards: diversity, quality and quantity. The majority of Bordeaux wines are the dry, medium-bodied reds that made the region famous.

Dom Perignon, 1966

Champagne - Brut

"Definitely fully mature champagne. Amber colour with a rather low key nose initially which opened out to something attractive and lightly sherrified nose that really speaks to the jamon iberico we're served at this dinner at Taillevent organised by François Audouze, his 170th wine dinner. Very deep and rich yet dry. Real lift to this wine but it also has a deep, throat- warming finish. There's a note of cheddar on the nose. Very clean and revitalising. Rich and dense." Jancis Robinson

Taylor's Port, 1966

Crusted Port bottled in 1966 by Wine Society

A rare bottling of Taylors Crusted port.

Crusted Port derives its name from the fact that, exactly like Vintage Port, it will throw a 'crust' or natural deposit as it matures in bottle. It will therefore require a simple decanting prior to serving. Stand the bottle upright a few hours before opening so as to allow the deposit to settle and carefully pour the wine into large clean wine glasses.

1964 Tokaji, 1964

Szamorodni Dry, Monimpex (Half litre, 50cl)
Special Offer - Was £129, Now £79

This dry version of Tokaji is produced from ripe and very ripe but healthy clusters, it can be compared to some wines from Jura and Jerez. Its character is determined by the long barrel ageing partly under the yeast veil or flor (biological ageing). The flor gives the wine an amazing freshness, while the rancio character comes from the oxidation of the late harvested grapes.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1964

Pauillac Premiere Grand Cru Classe (Henry Moore label)

Reviews ....
"pretty good cork was in beautiful shape. Color was brick red and showed nice tart cherries and fresh earthy aromas. The flavor profile showed reasonable concentration and while a bit earthy and a tad acidic, was full of dried red fruits and wonderful spices. While tannins were fully resolved the acid kept this reasonably fresh and inviting. A nice long rustic earthy finish kept me coming back for more."

Dom Perignon, 1964

Champagne - Brut

"This wine combined the big nutty tones of age with young acidity and fresh attack. The has everything, where the butterscotch is separated from the fruit and nut aromas. This butterscotch taste remains all the way and makes up the entire, exceptionally long aftertaste. One of my three winners at the big Millennium Tasting." Richard Juhlin, April 2004
