Novello, 1997

Bosco del Merlo - Paladin

Bright ruby red colour with aromas of ripe, red berry fruits, sweet cherries and undergrowth with underlying scents of eucalyptus and nutmeg, intertwined with subtle hints of dark chocolate. The flavour is round and full-bodied, with a tightly woven structure and an inviting, fruity core, leading to a long-lingering, balsamic finish. ** Please note that this wine is part of a clearance offer and therefore is excluded from our guarantee**

Quarles Harris Vintage Port, 1997

Vintage Port

Established in 1680, Quarles Harris became a subsidiary of Warre in 18th century. Since then, Quarles Harris has continued making good Ports under the Symington's ownership. Peter Symington, has a simple saying to remember about Quarles Harris: "Unless they are good we don't bottle them, having ensured that tradition and expertise is passed from generation to generation thus maintaining the excellent reputation of Quarles Harris.

An elegant, dense purple-colored offering, this 1997 offers up sweet aromas of melted licorice intermixed with blackberries, black raspberries, and cassis. Soft, precocious, and pure, this medium-bodied, suave, graceful port should be approachable in 4-5 years and last until 2040.

Quinta de la Rosa, 1997

Vintage Port

La Rosa's classic house style achieved by slow maceration in traditional granite 'Lagares' has produced a wine full of luscious forward fruit with a very attractive nose and a long velvety slightly drier finish across the palate

La Rosa is a vertically integrated Quinta rising to 450 metres above sea level, boasting many hidden micro climates within its cirtilage. Where possible we vintage and mature these small 'lotes' separately in order to achieve the maximum complexity in the finished ports, which would not have been possible from a less diversely planted property.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1997

Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port

Quinta do Noval is a much-venerated name in the Douro Valley and Nacional is undoubtedly one of the most legendary fortified wines in the world. It is produced from a small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines that have remained untouched by Phylloxera and has an average production of between 250 and 275 cases. 1997 was widely considered to be an exceptional vintage for Ports of fabulous harmony and incredible structure.

1997 was the follow-up to the sublime 1994 and somewhat incredibly managed to ascend to even greater heights. A benchmark Nacional that will bring several decades of drinking pleasure.

Quinta do Noval Port, 1997

Silval Vintage Port

Robert Parker: 93/100 "A small quinta owned by Quinta do Noval, the 1997 Silval is a splendid effort as well as a sleeper of the vintage. This full-bodied, saturated purple-colored wine displays abundant quantities of chocolate, licorice, and coffee bean notes intertwined with black berry and cassis fruit. Massive in the mouth, with sweet tannin and stunning concentration, this knock-out 1997 should drink well in 3-4 years, and last for two decades or more. Very impressive!"
James Suckling: [Wine Spectator] 91/100 "Impressive berry, violet and grape skin aromas. Full-bodied, with a solid core of silky tannins and a long, caressing finish.

Quinta do Passadouro, 1997

Quinta do Passadouro, Vintage Port

"The 1997 is an elegant Port, though having some good depth. Its tannins were melted and some secondary flavours were already starting to show, the fruit was chaging from ripe plums to candied figs. It is reaching its 2nd plateau of maturity.
Passadouro is an early drinker but this 1997 is one of the good port wines they made in the 90's.

Ramos Pinto, 1997

Vintage Port

A glass at Ramos Pinto, this was initially a little closed, particularly compared to the 1982 vintage alongside it. After some patient swirling prune and dried raspberry fruit emerges, with spice and tobacco. The palate is very smooth; sweet and chocolatey in the house style. It also has something rather savoury and mineral about it, with plenty of tannin. The overall feel is still quite young, just entering its drinking window, with a lot to recommend it as a port for the future. DF Review for Vivino, 2020

Talinda Oaks, 1997

Sandford and Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Ynez Valley, California

'Talinda Oaks' is a private label produced for the proprietor of Sanford and Benedict
Vineyard

Tasting Notes The nose is initially gamey, but soon gives way to stewed raspberry and dates with
mace/nutmeg afternotes. This wine is certainly fully mature but not without merit. The pallet holds up fairly well with
soft autumnal fruit and a pleasant finish. Not a wine to lay down, but it will yield some pleasure over the Summer.

Ryst-Dupeyon Armagnac, 1996

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1996 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

1996 Taylor's Port, 1996

Sale

Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port -HALF BOTTLE 37.5 cl
Special Offer | Was £49.95 | Now £29.95

The Taylor's 1996 Vargellas Vintage Port is a deep ruby, fading to brick on the rim. Rich clean nose, with dense dark cherry and Victoria plum aromas. A round, velvety textured wine with fine plump fruit, power and grip. Surprisingly youthful and fresh still.

Very typical Taylor's style on the nose, rather reserved, spicy and stylish fruit. Gentle, and a lovely silkiness to at the start. Fine fruit, very stylish composition. Appropriate grip and texture. Lots of tannin evident on a second taste. This is rather good. From a Port Styles tasting. 16.5-17+/20 (Wine Doctor 2007).

The viticulutural season began with a very wet winter.

Barros Port, 1996

Colheita Port
Gold Medal - Decanter 95 Points.

Vivid golden colour. Rich and elegant nose, combining the dried fruits aromas with the aromatic wood notes. Soft and silky in the taste, full with ripe figs and sweet flavours. A sensation of depth, in an elegant and distinctive style. Perfect and overwhelming finish.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel. Contrast this with vintage ports which are aged in the bottle and only have a short drinking window after opening. Colheita ports have had air working on them through the cask during all the years of ageing, giving them an open-life of a month or longer. Lighter and more delicate than vintage ports,

Vintage Port
In Branded Gift Box

This 1996 Burmester Vintage Port from the fabulous 1996 Port Vintage has outstanding provenance! This bottle has been stored at the Burmester cellars on Porto since bottling until it was acquired by us earlier this year.

The 1996 Burmester is a beautiful mature tawny colour. On the nose it has cocoa, chocolate together with a hint of mint. On the palate this is quite complex - medium bodied with a perfect balance between the acidity, tannins and flavours, there is a little spiciness in the mouth that adds to the experience. Long, long finish. This is in a good place and should hold well for the next decade or so.

Chateau Grand Pontet, 1996

St Emilion

90-91 points outstanding - Robert Parker

"This up and coming St.-Emilion is somewhat under-rated given the consistently high quality of recent vintages. The 1996 is a flamboyant, dark ruby/purple-colored wine with a soaring bouquet of plum liqueur, toasty new oak, black cherries, smoke, and dried herbs. In the mouth, evidence of sur-maturite jamminess and richness emerge from this medium-bodied, rich, spicy, impressively-endowed wine. There is tannin in the medium to full-bodied finish." - RP

Chateau Leoville Poyferre, 1996

St Julien 2me Cru Classe

*** 93 Points - Robert Parker ***

"This fabulous 1996 was tasted three times from bottle, and it is unquestionably the finest wine produced by this estate since their blockbuster 1990. Medium to full-bodied, with a saturated black/purple color, the nose offers notes of cedar, jammy black fruits, smoke, truffles, and subtle new oak. In the mouth, there is impressive fruit extraction, a tannic, full-bodied structure, and a classic display of power and finesse. The longer it sat in the glass, the more impressive the wine became. Backward, and massive in terms of its extract and richness, this should prove to be a sensational Leoville-Poyferre for drinking over the next three decades.
