Cabernet Sauvignon, 1999

Villa Pampini

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every wine-growing country in the world. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedar wood.

Camelot, 1999

Firrilato

An outstanding wine from Sicily

Camelot’s elegance is the result of lengthy research, over more than 20 years, which Firriato has dedicated to guaranteeing the best climate and soil conditions for growing Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Baglio Sorìa vineyards, located at an altitude of 120metres above sea level, with their vicinity to the Trapani coast and the uniqueness of their terroir, contribute to determining the ideal conditions for the cultivation of these two vines. The red marl in its soils allows the earth, during the hotter months, to remain compact and not crack. This maintains constant humidity in the subsoil which favours a balance between the ripened fruit’s sugar levels and its polyphenols,

Chateau Calon Segur, 1999

3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

This supple 1999 is an elegant, lighter-styled Calon-Segur, particularly when compared to the 2000. It exhibits an evolved color, sweet cherry and dusty berry fruit, and hints of dried herbs. It is a spicy, cherry-flavored effort with a style reminiscent of a Beaune premier cru. The blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc has resulted in a wine of elegance and finesse rather than one with a lot of stuffing and power.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, 1999

St Julien 2me Cru Classe

** 91 Points - Robert Parker **

The deep purple-colored 1999 Ducru Beaucaillou, which represents 60% of the crop, offers aromas of crushed stones, raspberry liqueur, and black currants. This sweet, pure, and harmonious wine possesses elegance, finesse, and multiple nuances rather than power, concentration, and structure. This is Bordeaux at its finest.

Chateau la Tour Blanche, 1999

The 1999 la Tour Blanche is medium gold in colour with quite an earthy, savoury nose giving up perfumed notions of orange blossoms and honeysuckle over preserved apricots, apple pie and allspice hints. Chateau Lascombes, 1999

Margaux Grand Cru Classe

The 1999 Lascombes has a deep garnet core with a thin tawny rim. The nose is open-knit, forward, a little muffled with notes of soy and liquorice. The palate is expressive and forward, lacking real vigour. Soft tannins, a little diffused with notes of blackberry, soy and a touch of pain grille. It is an enjoyable, fully mature wine.

Chateau Lestage-Simon, 1999

Haut Medoc

This wine from the excellent 1999 vintage has a luminous garnet red color with some translucency. Quite expressive and somewhat earthy nose with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, and a little bit of mushroomy sous-bois. The wine is dry, austere and medium-bodied on the palate with moderately high acidity and flavors of woody spice, blackcurrant-driven crunchy dark berries. The structure relies mainly on the acidity, as the tannins feel pretty soft and well-manicured.

Chateau Margaux, 1999

Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe

94 Points - Robert Parker
95+ Points - Wine Journal

"The sexy, dark plum/purple-colored 1999 Margaux is already revealing complex aromatics. This surprisingly charming and round offering is reminiscent of a vintage such as 1985. Although neither a blockbuster nor a heavyweight, it grows in the mouth revealing tremendous length as well as purity. Administrator Paul Pontallier prefers it to the more austere 1998, as do I. This is an archetypical Chateau Margaux of richness, finesse, balance, and symmetry. It can be drunk young, but promises to age nicely for two decades. Extrapolating backwards, it would probably have something in common with the underrated 1962 Medocs.

Chateau Palmer, 1999

Margaux 3rd Growth Classification
Magnum 150cl

Review Scores
*** 95/100 (outstanding) - parker ***
*** 17.5+/20 - Jancis Robinson ***

Robert Parker writes of this wine... "The 1999 is the greatest Palmer made since 1961, 1966, 1970, 1983, and 1989. It is one of the superstars of the vintage. The wine is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. It boasts a staggering bouquet of violets and other spring flowers intermixed with licorice, black currants, and subtle wood. Only 50% of the production made it into the grand vin. This is a multidimensional, compelling effort with both power and elegance, it offers sweet tannin along with flavors that caress the palate, and a 45-second finish.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1999

Domaine Font de Michelle, Etienne Gonnet

The 1999 Chataeuneuf du Pape wine from Etienne Gonnet is a profound, smokey, leathery nose with an intriguing aromatic note like sandalwood. Beautiful palate with a gorgeous, silky texture, and a very sweet impression. Intense, wonderfully scented Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Producer Guilllaume Gonnet produces this Châteauneuf-du-Pape from equal quantities of Grenache and Syrah, the vines farmed biodynamically and on average, between 50 and 90 years old. That age of vine leads to an especially intense, pure Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with tonnes of dark fruit aroma, touches of mixed herbs and liquorice.

Chianti Colli Senesi, 1999

Caulio - Pietraserena

The typical characteristics this Chianti exhibits are a bright ruby colour which turns to garnet with time, a fruity nose with black cherry and violets, with a more pronounced character of finesse when the wine undergoes ageing. The palate is balanced, fruity, slightly tannic which is refined over time to a soft and velvet taste.

Chianti Colli Senesi is perhaps Chianti's most significant subzone, located on the hills surrounding Siena in the southern part of the Chianti region. The title is used to cover Sangiovese-based wines from the less prestigious vineyards of the area. These wines can be forward and fruity while still exhibiting Chianti's characteristic rustic charm.

The area’s most highly regarded wines come from the Chianti Classico zone which is the heartland of the Chianti wine region – its traditional and longest-established vinicultural area. This fame is due not just to the high quality of the wines, but also to the classico zone's iconic Tuscan landscape and wine making traditions.
