  • Description

The 1965 Barbera from Valfieri di Marengo e Cugnasco is a rare example of aged Barbera, a varietal more commonly enjoyed in its youth due to its naturally high acidity and typically modest tannins. Coming from a traditional Piemontese house, this wine offers a glimpse into mid-20th century winemaking and regional character, with an emphasis on rustic charm and structure rather than polish.

In the glass, the wine likely appears pale garnet with amber-orange tinges at the rim, showing clear signs of age. The nose may reveal dried sour cherry, old leather, pipe tobacco, and cedar box, underscored by oxidative and earthy tones. Secondary aromas of dried herbs and potpourri may also emerge, especially after a short time in the glass.

On the palate, this 1965 Barbera would be light-bodied and delicate, with much of the original fruit softened or faded. Its acidity may still be present, lending freshness, though the structure is likely mellowed. Expect soft notes of stewed plum, balsamic reduction, dried fruit, and faint nutty qualities—typical of older wines past their peak but still capable of offering historical and sentimental value.

Barbera is not often made for half-century aging, so while not likely to provide a powerful sensory experience, it could still offer a fascinating taste of the past, especially for collectors or lovers of Piemontese heritage wines.
