  • Description

The 1955 Gattinara from Luigi Nervi is an extraordinary relic from one of Alto Piemonte’s most historic producers. Nervi, founded in 1906 and the oldest winery in Gattinara, is renowned for crafting elegant, long-lived Nebbiolo wines in a cooler, more alpine-influenced climate than Barolo or Barbaresco. In a strong vintage like 1955, the estate’s wines display remarkable longevity, finesse, and an unmistakable sense of place.

In the glass, the wine shows a pale brick-garnet core with amber reflections, characteristic of mature Nebbiolo. The bouquet is delicate yet profound, revealing dried roses, cherry skin, orange zest, and leather, accompanied by earthy tones of truffle, smoke, and mineral dust. A touch of iron and alpine herbs may also emerge—hallmarks of Gattinara’s volcanic soils.

The palate is finely structured, with the tannins having softened into a gentle, chalky texture. The acidity remains vibrant, giving lift and balance to flavours of dried red fruit, balsamic, cedar, and subtle spice. It finishes long and precise, echoing with notes of dried herbs and a mineral edge that reflects both terroir and time.

1955 was a superb vintage across much of northern Italy, and this bottling from Luigi Nervi stands as a graceful, timeworn expression of Nebbiolo’s purity and endurance outside the Langhe. It’s a contemplative, soulful wine—ideal for collectors and lovers of aged Italian reds who appreciate subtlety, structure, and tradition.
