Description

This 1965 S. Margherita Merlot is a remarkable survivor from a golden era of Italian winemaking. With six decades of careful ageing, it offers a rare glimpse into how Merlot develops extraordinary complexity and elegance over time.

Aromas of maturity and finesse
In the glass, it shows a pale garnet core with a warm amber rim, a testament to its age. The bouquet is beautifully evolved, with layers of dried plum, cherry compote, leather, pipe tobacco, and cedarwood, underpinned by subtle notes of forest floor and sweet spice.

Smooth, graceful palate
The tannins have melted away into a silky, almost ethereal texture, while the wine’s natural acidity keeps it vibrant. Flavours of fig, dried red berries, cocoa, and a touch of balsamic herb unfold gently, leading to a lingering, harmonious finish.

Serving and enjoyment
This is a delicate, fully mature wine that should be handled with care. Stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle, and decant lightly just before serving. Best enjoyed in large, thin-rimmed glasses at 16–18 °C, where its aromas can fully bloom.
