Description
1985 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano – Poggio alla Sala (Tuscany, Italy)
A fully mature, classically styled Nobile showing perfume and savoury finesse. Brick-garnet with a tawny rim, it opens on dried cherry and amarena, rose petal and cedar, with sweet tobacco, leather and hints of orange peel, bay and black tea. The palate is mid-weight and silken: lively, old-school acidity carries savoury red-cherry fruit, dried herbs and a gentle balsamic note; tannins are fine and resolved. The finish is long and tapering with cherry skin, cedar spice and dried flowers.
Producer note: Poggio alla Sala’s high, breezy vineyards around Montepulciano favour Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) of aromatic lift and elegance; traditional ageing brings the graceful maturity on show here.
Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; very gentle decant for sediment just before pouring.
Food pairing: Roast pork with fennel, pappardelle al ragù, porcini risotto, aged pecorino.
