Description
The 1985 Taylor’s Vintage Port is a superb expression of the house’s hallmark style—firm, structured, and capable of great longevity. While not quite as monumental as their legendary 1970 or 1994, the 1985 is a standout from this classic declared vintage, showing the balance and precision that Taylor’s is known for. Now approaching 40 years of age, it has entered a glorious period of maturity, offering power, poise, and aromatic complexity in equal measure.
The nose is deep and captivating, with concentrated aromas of blackberry compote, cassis, and dark plum, layered with violet, spice, and graphite. Secondary notes of cedarwood, liquorice, dried fig, and cigar box reveal its maturity, while a faint floral lift adds elegance. Taylor’s signature austerity has softened with age, allowing a rich aromatic profile to emerge without excess sweetness.
On the palate, the wine remains full-bodied and muscular, with a firm tannic spine supporting generous layers of dark fruit, fruitcake, and spice. There’s still plenty of depth and energy, driven by fresh acidity and a savoury undercurrent. The finish is long, dry, and beautifully composed, with notes of cocoa, roasted nuts, and hints of peppered cherry lingering on the palate. This is a Vintage Port with remarkable structure and finesse.
The 1985 Taylor’s is in its prime drinking window now but will easily hold through the late 2030s. A two-hour decant is recommended to remove sediment and allow the wine to unfold fully. Serve with blue cheeses, walnut tart, or as a dignified end to a special meal. A true classic from a vintage that continues to deliver.
