The 1975 vintage was a mixed vintage for the majority of the wine world but the real winners were 1975 whites. Champagne had a great year along with Sauternes and the aromatic white wine regions of Alsace.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Palmer port 1975 Single Harvest Tawny Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac Reserve Joseph Millesime
  • Barolo 1975 Valfieri
  • Chateau Coutet 1975 Barsac Premier Cru Classe
  • Cognac 1975 Grande Champagne Cognac
  • Cossart Gordon Maderira 1975 Vintage Verdelho Madeira

  •
This Year in History: Fun Facts: The first episode of the popular sitcom Fawlty Towers is broadcast on BBC Two.
Eurovision Winner: Netherlands with the song "Ding-A-Dong" by Teach-In
    Top Grossing Movie: Jaws

Bordeaux: The summer months were hot and, initially, dry. Despite storms in August, good weather was restored through September and October, permitting the harvest to go on uninfluenced by rain. The wines on release were incredibly tannic yet were intensely fruity and rich. This has mellowed somewhat over 40+ years of cellaring leaving excellent examples of wines that will last well into the future.

Italian: The 1975 is widely regarded as an excellent vintage for Tuscany. The wines are generally big on alcohol, colour, extract and acidity. 1975 is remembered for the extremely hot and dry summer which produced grapes of high concentration, although the harvest in Tuscany was complicated by late rainfall. 1975 was without a doubt the outstanding Brunello vintage of the decade and in the opinion of many producers one of the all time greats. The best wines in Chianti were very good indeed.

Portugal: The 1975 vintage port declaration came shortly after the 1974 revolution. Under pressure of nationalisation, the port shippers were keen to show what was possible after a run of weak vintages. Whilst the ports are not in the same league as the other 70's declarations like the 1970 or the 1977, they have stood up well and represent a superb quality vs price ratio. Recent tastings have demonstrated that the best are elegant and a pleasure to drink. The wines are now fully mature, with the top producers producing good '75s that will grow old gracefully. They are elegant, fruity and well balanced but not big. A port from 1975 would make an excellent 48 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

    Nebbiolo, 1975

    Fontanafredda

The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

    Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1975

    Vintage Port

"Deeper in colour (as you would expect) but not deep for a Nacional, mid-garnet, thin browning rim; rather odd medicinal aromas, stewed plums; soft, sweet plummy fruit, rather simple and lacking structure with a slightly burnt edge, fuller with some grip on the finish but not really satisfying. I suppose this is not so bad for a 1975 though. Drink now and over the next ten years. 14.5. [Deep colour but already looking quite mature, beautiful liquorice and chocolate aromas, elegant concentration of flavour, firm, milk chocolate finish.]" Richard Mayson.

    Rebello Valente Vintage Port, 1975

    Vintage Port

Robertson Bros were the shippers behind this brand, which was once one of the most reputable, though, since a fine 1970, very little Vintage Port bears the name.

Drink it alone for dessert. It is like a delicious piece of fruitcake. Medium red, with a roasted, chocolate, earthy nose, medium-bodied, with plenty of tannins and roasted, fruity flavours on the palate.

"Recioto," as in "Recioto della Valpolicella," refers to a dessert wine made from grapes that were dried on mats after picking. This process turns the grapes closer to raisins, concentrating the flavors. The wines are lovely and taste how you'd expect raisins-turned-wine to taste, rich and sweet.

    St. Magdalener, 1975

St. Magdalena is an area covering the lower, south-facing slopes above Bozen-Bolzano. The “Kienaster” vineyard where this particular wine comes from is situated near the village of St. Pauls. It is made from the Vernatsch-Schiava grape and a very small proportion of Lagrein. The extremely favourable climatic conditions combined with very steep vineyards result in a dark ruby wine, finely scented, soft and velvety on the palate.

    Taylor's Port, 1975

    Vintage Port
    Unlabelled - see conditions report

The 1975 vintage is massively underrated, languishing in the shadows of the great 1970 and 1977 vintages. The Ports produced are lighter in style than other declarations but represent tremendous value. The Taylor's 1975 Vintage Port is no exception. Our tastings over the past few years have shown this wine consitently has a good colour in the glass and a mature nose. It has good structure and backbone that is typical of Taylors. It is a touch spirity, with some gentle, stony, red fruits. On the palate there is an immediately apparent sweetness which persists through to the finish.

Reviews "This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal.

    Tokaji, 1975

    Szamorodni Monimpex
    Sweet White Wine
    Half Bottle 37.5cl

Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labelling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot. Creating the botrytised ('aszú') grapes for which the region is famous. A wonderful sweet wine from this renowned producer.

In 1968, the boundaries of the region were extended far eastward towards the DOC production zone of Soave and south to the plains of the northern bank of the Po river and its tributary the Adige.

The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements.

    Vino Bosco di Pomposa, 1975

    Felloni Rossi

The grafting of the vine in the Valleys probably took place in 1528, when Ercole II Duca d'Este married Renata of France, daughter of Louis XII, who brought as a dowry a vine of the Côte d'Or of Burgundy, the Golden Grape precisely, that it found the perfect habitat in the areas of the Sandy Dunes of the Delta and in the Dossi of the Bosco Eliceo to reproduce at its best, among the holm oaks and delta bushes. The particularly humid, foggy and static environment, the strongly brackish air and soil, the constant proximity of the sea and the lack of fresh water contribute, over the centuries, to the formation of a grape with a very strong character.
