1980 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port:

1980-wine-gifts

The 1980 Port vintage is rated as outstanding and was generally declared vintage. Over time the 1980 Ports have been hugely under-rated book-ended by the great 1977 and large abundant 1983 and 1985 vintages. This vintage is ready now but will continue to develop and keep for decades, making them the perfect 40 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

An unusually early spring was followed by an extremely dry growing season and sugar readings were on the low side when picking began a week or so later than normal, at the end of September.

Italian: 1980 for Italian wines was a very good year. The wines are generally quite consistent and there are some great Barolo wines from Piedmont. The wines have reached full maturity but will last for a few more years.

Bordeaux: The 1980 wine vintage produced wines of variable quality from Bordeaux. A very wet, cool year resulted in wines that were light and diluted. Nevertheless, some producers who operated a strict selection policy still managed to produce acceptable wines.

Champagne: In Champagne, the 1980 is an exceptionally fine, rich vintage.

1980 Burmester Port

Sale

40 Year Old Vintage Port
Includes Presentation Box
Special Offer | Was £89 | Now £59.95
Max two bottles per customer

This 1980 Vintage Port from Burmester has outstanding provenance! This bottle has been stored at the Burmester cellars on Porto since bottling until it was acquired by us earlier this year.

The 1980 Burmester is a beautiful tawny colour indicating maturity. On the nose it has cocoa, chocolate together with a notes of tropical fruit. On the palate this is quite complex - medium bodied with well integrated, tannins and tropical fruit flavours, there is also a little spiciness in the mouth that adds to the experience. Long, long finish. This is in a good place and should hold well for the next decade or so.

Tasting Notes: The Palmer 40 Year tawny is a careful blend of many traditional grape varieties from selected vineyards in various areas of the Douro Demarcated Region, patiently aged for 40 years in old oak casks. The 40 Year old has a pronounced aroma intensity that is very rich with nuts and baked cherry. There is further complexity of nutmeg and cream. On the palate the wine is very balanced between acidity and sweetness that gives a luxurious mouthfeel. Lovely richness of fruitcake, fig, baked plum, caramel and toffee.

1980 Chateau Mouton Rothschild

Paulliac 1er Cru Grand Classe (Level Base of Neck)

** 92 Points Neil Martin ***

Reviews
"A complete shock to everyone who tasted this blind at La Trouvaille. Tasted alongside Lynch Bages 66, a little fatter on the nose with notes of cedar and cooked meats. Good poise and freshness. The palate has good depth, smooth tannins and quite vivacious. Full of life and vigour. Where does the concentration come from? Who cares - a wine that stuck two fingers up at all its critics who have ever dismissed this wine. Lovely. Tasted February 2004." Neil Martin Wine Journal

1980 Taylor's Port

Vintage Port

An outstanding wine scoring 91 points.

Review: "A deep, clear garnet colour. The nose is very backward, quite austere and conservative with notes of cherry and raspberry leaf, a touch of cigar box developing with aeration. It perhaps lacks a little joie-de-vivre, especially when compared to vintage in the 1970s. the palate is attractive though, with notes of raspberry, plum, white pepper, blood orange and a touch of apricot. Very good acidity, perhaps like the -55, this is a Taylor's playing it safe, unwilling to take chances and yet it is lush on the finish with its plum and briary flavours.

40 Year Old Graham's

Tawny Port in Presentation tube.

Graham's 40 Years Old is made from wines of the very highest quality which, following careful selection, are matured in seasoned oak casks of until their peak of maturity is reached. These are among the most demanding and challenging styles of Port to produce requiring great skill and years of experience from the winemaker and blender. It is essential to strike the correct balance between the delicacy and elegance which results from prolonged cask ageing while retaining the fruit quality which lends this old Tawny its structure and longevity.

Golden amber with a pale green tinge at the rim which denotes great quality and class.

40 Year Old Kopke

Tawny Port presented in a Kopke wooden box

***95 Points-cellartracker.com***

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Reviews:
Dark tawny with orangey-red highlights. I wouldn't quite call it mahogany in colour, but it's close. Very dark, and lots of brown.
Nose: As is typical, lots of (to me) Madeira-like notes. Some leather, some dark aromatic wood like sandalwood, some apricot, and a bit of spirit.

40 Year Old Messias

Tawny Port

Very pale amber/tawny/orange colour. Fine and delicate aromas of hazelnuts and candied citrus. Quince marmalade character, delicate in style, with finesse and poise. Seemingly quite dry in style towards the finish (not as obviously rich as some here), and supremely refined.

Cantine Ottavio Follo

Barolo, 1980

Ascheri Giacomo

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods with no problem at all.

Barolo, 1980

Bruno Giacosa - Le Rocche di Castiglione Falletto

*** 92 Points Cellar Tracker ***

Review
"The ‘80 Rocche displayed a fully mature bouquet of tart dried berries, orange peel, hints of caramel and iodine. On the palate, I found savory and herbal-infused remnants of red berry with hints of cedar and spice. A wave of acidity maintained freshness throughout and paved the way for a pleasurable finale of dried berries and earth tones." 92 Points Cellar Tracker.

Dao, 1980

Porta dos Cavaleiros

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Dolcetto d'Alba, 1980

Terre del Barolo 3.78 Litre Bottle

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.
