1998 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port: A port wine from 1998 would make an excellent 21 year old wine gift, for a 21st birthday or anniversary. This year was not generally declared as a vintage, however a small crop produced some good and powerful Single Quinta Vintage Ports. Colheitas or Single Harvest Ports such as Kopke or Barros would make an excellent alternative for port lovers and newcomers alike.

Italian: Another very good year for Tuscany and Piedmont, although some Tuscan producers suffered from poor picking timing during the October rains. Those that picked before or after were rewarded with long living wines but to be sure, we would recommend picking a Barolo or Barbaresco from Piedmont. The wines are classics and will drink well now or keep for years to come.

Bordeaux: This year favoured the merlot grape, leading to a glorious vintage in Pomerol and St Emilion. This is undoubtedly the greatest vintage for Merlot-dominated wines since 1990, and the quality of the St-Emilions and Pomerols is outstanding being powerful and tannic. The Médoc wines were initially underrated, but properties with the finest terroirs have produced some excellent high-quality wines that are now showing tremendous promise.

Champagne: The 1998 champagne has, over the last couple of years, been re-appraised in an upwards direction. What was always seen as very good year is now regarded as an excellent one. The wines are ripe but not overly so, fleshy but with structure to repay cellaring.

Spain: This would have been an exceptional year for Rioja. The weather was mild in winter months with a non frosty Spring offering excellent flowering conditions throughout the summer. Unfortunately, the rain hit hard in mid September forcing an early start to the harvest. By October 12th everyone was picking or had picked, but those who picked late saw the benefit of an Indian summer which allowed ripening to continue in excellent conditions until November 3rd. These later-gathered grapes will, it’s hoped, make some excellent Reservas.

Barbaresco, 1998

Michele Chiarlo

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Chateau Cissac, 1998

Medoc, Cru Bourgeois - damaged labels

Good colour, great legs and nose. Quite nice when opened. Perhaps a trace of liquorice and a hint of 'medicinal' character. After 3-4 hours - quite rich and aromatic with good cherry fruit and a touch of maraschino at the end. Tannins are soft and have integrated completely.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1998

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

*** 88 Points - Robert Parker ***

The nose is quite smoky and dusty, with a touch of green pepper. Very masculine, as is the palate that is foursquare, with dusty tannins, cigar box and blackberry leaf. It is very Saint Estephe with its earthy finish.

"Bottled in April, 2000, this elegant, stylish, graceful wine is an attractive, dark ruby/purple-colored effort with subtle notes of sweet oak, licorice, herbs, and black fruits. While not massive, it is medium-bodied and ripe, with sweet tannin. Forty-eight percent of the production was utilized in this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.

This is a very fine La Lagune. A deep garnet core with tawny rim, the nose straightlaced with cedar, smoke, a touch of cranberry and a little cracked black pepper. Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1998

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

***98 Parker Points***

In a less than perfect Medoc vintage, the 1998 Chateau Lafite has been spectacular since birth, putting on more weight and flesh over the last year. This opaque purple-coloured 1998 is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smokey, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. The wine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite's character. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layered yet never heavy. The finish is sweet, super-rich, yet impeccably balanced and long (50+ seconds).

Chateau Latour, 1998

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1998 Chateau Latour is a refined, elegant offering with a dark ruby colour, sweet cassis fruit, attractive fat, surprisingly soft tannin, and a good finish. There is firmness and muscle in the background, but this is not an enormous or powerful Latour. However, it is very pure, with the vineyard's mineral/black fruit character presented in a medium-weight format.

Chateau Milens, 1998

New

St Emilion Grand Cru

Rich and opulent nose full of toasty, spicy, jammy notes. On the palate the style is open and lush with a softly textured and polished feel although the tannins are surprisingly firm for a wine made by the man from Valandraud. The finish is slightly unbalanced costing the palate some of its effortless immediacy, good finish and great value.

Chateau Rauzan-Segla, 1998

Margaux 2me Cru Classe

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Ruby-red. Penetrating, minerally aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and cedary oak. Denser and more structured than the '99; with its firmer acidity, this is more classic claret. Very rich, sharply delineated wine that will require at least seven or eight years of bottle aging. (ST) (5/2001)

90 points Wine Spectator
Dark colour, with a ripe blackberry character and hints of minerals. Medium- to full-bodied, with lovely, integrated tannins and velvety, round mouthfeel. Lovely now. (JS, Web-2009)

Laphoraig, 1998

New

12 Year old Single Malt The Whisky Castle Collection no 12.

A 12 year old Laphroaig distilled in 1998, matured in sherry butt #80017 and bottled in 2011 for Whisky Castle Ltd.

Laphroaig distillery is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky distillery. It is named for the area of land at the head of Loch Laphroaig on the south coast of the Isle of Islay. The meaning of the toponym is unknown, but a commonly suggested etymology includes the elements "lag" (Gaelic: hollow), "breid" (Norse: broad) and "vik" (Norse: bay), implying an original Gaelic form something like "Lag Bhròdhaig" (the hollow of Broadbay). The name may be related to a placename on the east coast of Islay, "Pròaig", again suggested as meaning "broad bay".

Percarlo is aged in French oak barriques for 20-22 months, bottled unfiltered and held in bottle for another 18 months before being released. The grapes which go into the making of Percarlo are selected, bunch per bunch, from vineyards whose soil dates predominately to the Pliocene epoch.

Chateau Yquem, 1998

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

‘A beautiful, slightly golden yellow, this wine is still very young to express much on the initial nose. After swirling, and even more so after a few minutes in the glass, there come scents of citrus, raisins and also more floral aromas with delicate lime flower. These are still early days and time is needed for these impressions to develop. In the mouth the great quality and potential are obvious. The attack is round, and the volume quickly fills the whole mouth. What sweetness and what pleasure - with just enough acidity. Flavours of mandarin, apricot, fruit paste, then the vanillary, lightly grilled notes associated with the long élevage in barrel.
