1999 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port: 1999 was not a general declaration of vintage, however some vineyards produced small quantities of outstanding single quinta wines. These, along with our "20 Years of Port" sets, make a great 20 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

Italian: The Barolos and Barbarescos are very good and are reminiscent of the 95s in style and structure. 1999 was the third top vintage in a row in Tuscany. Despite the wet weather in most of Italy, the region remained hot and dry for most of the growing season, although there was intermittent rain during the harvest. Those who picked before the September rains have produced deeply coloured wines that are brimming with rich, ripe fruits.

Bordeaux: A very good vintage that produced low acidity, ripe wines which have matured quickly and are drinkable now. However, they should last for years to come. The weather during the growing and harvest season was excessively wet and hot and in earlier times could have been disastrous. However, those Chateau that adopted modern selection and processing techniques produced wines of good quality. Those that did not fared less well, a discrepancy reflected in the wide variation in quality across the region.

It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. Blandys Madeira, 1999

Malmsey Colheita Madeira (H/Litre, 50cl) Includes gift box as illustrated

Blandy’s Malmsey 1999 vintage Madeira was aged for 16 years in seasoned American oak casks and as with all the family’s vintages, this wine started its ageing process in the warm high attic floors of the lodge in the centre of Funchal. Over the 16 years, the wine passed down from the warmer top floor of the Blandy’s Wine Lodges, the “Sotão de Amendoa” where it spent the first 5 years, to the second floor for 7 years and finally to the cooler first for the remaining 4 years. The art of finding the right balance between concentration and the freshness of the wine lies in the winemaker’s decision when to transfer the wine to the lower cooler north facing floors of the lodge.

Cabernet Sauvignon, 1999

Villa Pampini

A 1999 vintage Italian wine. Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every wine-growing country in the world. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedar wood.

Camelot, 1999

Firrilato

An outstanding 1999 vintage red wine from Sicily.

Camelot’s elegance is the result of lengthy research, over more than 20 years, which Firriato has dedicated to guaranteeing the best climate and soil conditions for growing Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Baglio Sorìa vineyards, located at an altitude of 120 metres above sea level, with their vicinity to the Trapani coast and the uniqueness of their terroir, contribute to determining the ideal conditions for the cultivation of these two vines. The red marl in its soils allows the earth, during the hotter months, to remain compact and not crack.

Chateau Calon Segur, 1999

3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

This supple 1999 vintage Bordeaux wine from Chateau Calon-Segur is an elegant, lighter-styled Calon-Segur, particularly when compared to the 2000. It exhibits an evolved colour, sweet cherry and dusty berry fruit, and hints of dried herbs. It is a spicy, cherry-flavoured effort with a style reminiscent of a Beaune premier cru. The blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc has resulted in a wine of elegance and finesse rather than one with a lot of stuffing and power.
