Quevedo Taste at Home - Garrafeira vs Colheita Port - Online Tutored Tasting

Garafeira is a very rare style of Port and many Port lovers have never even heard of it, and even fewer have ever tasted one. Oscar has delved into his family's private cellars to bring you something really special. This wine has never been tasted by the public outside of his cellar.

Garrafeira is a special category of port. It is produced from grapes of a single-harvest and so carries a vintage year on the bottle: After ageing in cask for six years in cask, Quevedo bottled a small quantity of their 2000 and 1994 Port in glass demijohns so that the ageing continues in glass rather than cask.

Quevedo Port Bond (Case Of 6x75cl Bottles)

Learn more about Port Bonds

Vintage Port is the traditional gift for marking special family occasions, particularly the birth of a child. Vintage Port has an extraordinary ability to age gracefully for 75 years or more, developing from a structured, powerful and robust young wine into a sophisticated and elegant wine in middle age and then on to a delicate and ethereal beauty that will continue for decades.

Given that Port is usually not released until the second spring after a particular vintage is harvested, it was previously difficult to buy a case of Port as a commemorative gift as it would have to be done retrospectively.

Quinta do Noval, 2020

En Primeur offer for delivery late 2022
Price includes DUTY VAT and UK delivery.

The 2020 Vintage marks the tenth consecutive Vintage Port release from Quinta do Noval, in line with their long-held belief that the quality of the vintage, not the market, should be the only determining factor in whether a Vintage Port is made. In the case of 2020, Christian Seely describes these wines as “exceptional”, with a hot and dry summer resulting in an unusually early harvest and higher residual sugars. The wines display an “unusually powerful and rich style but nevertheless retain the purity and freshness of Pinhao valley fruit that are typical of Noval wines”.

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port is characterised by its purity of fruit and a fine,

Warre’s 2020 Vinhas Velhas Vintage Port – 350 Anniversary Edition
Warre’s 2020 Vinhas Velhas 350th Anniversary Edition Vintage Port is made from the magnificent old vines at two of Warre’s estates, made exclusively from deep-rooted, horse-ploughed, 80 to 100-year-old mixed vines – for the first time in Warre’s long history. These old mixed vines produced an average yield of just 310g per vine – meaning three vines were needed to produce one bottle of this Vintage Port, when typically, it requires just one vine. The wine is intensely fruit-driven with unparalleled concentration and elegance that belies the conditions of the year.

Special Offer | Was £79.95 | Now £69.95

Tasting Notes Deep ruby in colour, almost opaque. On the nose intense aromas of red and black fruits are married with spicy notes of pepper and ginger, hints of cacao and a subtle stony minerality. Great intensity on the palate, with opulent and firm tannins and a lively acidity which carries the intense flavours onto long and complex finish.

Luís Sottomayor describes the 2019 vintage as “a very good year, with freshness and great balance." Winter and spring were cooler and drier than normal, but April showers replenished water reserves in the soil and helped sustain the vines through the dry summer that followed.

Calem Port, 2019

Vintage Port

Cálem Classic Vintage Port, from the Douro Superior, reflects a myriad of terroirs that make up the classic profile of this House.
The result is of a blend from different plots of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Sousão. This Vintage by Cálem maintains the identity of the Port house: wines with a more robust profile, with firm structure and ripe fruit.

This Vintage presents an intense purple colour, the aromas are marked by blackberries that are complemented by notes of forest fruits, dark chocolate, pepper and slightly more resinous notes. Concentrated and intense, this is an irreverent and generous wine, with very firm tannins, suggesting great ageing potential.

Churchill's Port, 2019

Sale

Quinta da Gricha Vintage Port
Limited Edition 3 Pack - 3 x 75cl

All Churchill’s ports are made from Grade-A grapes that are hand-picked, hand sorted, and foot trod in the ancient granite lagares (treading tanks) at Quinta da Gricha in the Douro Valley. We allow an extended period of fermentation in lagares to limit the amount of brandy required in fortification and leading to a drier style of port.

TASTING NOTES

Nose: High tone aromas of fresh blueberries with a mineral undertone. Palate: Elegant intensity of herbs and spices on the palate, finishing with firm and well defined tannins and a vibrant natural acidity.

Reviews:
94 Points - Neil Martin - Vinous.
The 2019 Quinta Senhora Ribeira Vintage Port contains a higher percentage of Tinta Franca (53%), a variety that enjoys the heat, which underpins its success. It has a tightly wound nose, tertiary at first with undergrowth scents permeating the black fruit, tobacco and humidor, later scents of dates, fennel and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but ripe tannins, very well balanced with a liberal sprinkling of white pepper and clove. There is a subtle crescendo that peaks towards the finish with very fine, very chiseled tannins and impressive persistence.

Niepoort Port, 2019

Vintage Port

This is a Vintage Port with personality and, for Niepoort, richer and riper than previous vintages, but maintains the true essence of a Niepoort Vintage Port; finesse, no exuberance and an overarching balance to the wine that will continue to develop for years to come’

Brilliant appearance with a dark purple rim and concentrated depth of colour. The aroma is fine and subdued with only a hint of primary dark fruits and some spice. The true potential and style of this wine really comes together on the palate with wonderful integration of dark fruits with a grainy tannic structure, pairing volume with amazing balance and elegance and an impressive finish.

Vintage Port in presentation box
92 Points - Mark Squires (eRobert Parker)

The 2019 Vintage Port is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 25% Touriga Franca and 10% Tinta Roriz, with 25% from old vines (80+ years), all aged in old balseiros (large upright barrels) for 18 months. It was bottled in May 2021, with 112 grams of residual sugar. Sexy and sensual thanks to its velvety texture, this has classic Port flavors, but it does lean a little to the soft side. With 75 minutes of decanting into a glass, it drinks decently. The fruit and flavor are gorgeous, but the structure is not quite as impressive. Still, overall, a lot of folks will find this to be a pretty Porto with a lot to offer.

Quinta do Vesuvio, 2019

Vintage Port (3 x 150cl) MAGNUMS

The 2019 Quinta Vintage Ports are the result of an erratic growing season, with a little over 50% of the average winter rainfall in the Douro and almost none in the summer. Fortunately, showers at the end of August helped the grapes achieve more balanced maturations. Head Winemaker, Charles Symington, exercised patience and precisely timed the picking over six weeks – making it one of the longest harvests in recent years. The reward was a collection of perfectly ripe grape varieties in good quantities (averaging 1.27 kg/vine) delivering lively and exuberant wines. This was in contrast to the concentration of the exceptionally small years in 2017 and 2018.

Vintage Port
In Original Sandeman Gift Box
Decanter 2021 Silver Award Winner

2018 Sandeman Vintage Port. Sandeman did not produce a 2017 Classic Vintage Port in the knowledge that they had something better in the cask. The Single Quinta they produced in 2017 was in my top three Ports of the vintage so everything is looking good for the 2018. The price tag of the 2018 is hefty - well above other declared ports in this year. Early reviews appear to indicate that it merits it status.

Wine Makers Notes.
On the nose intense and precise aromas of blackberry and black cherry combine with herbal nuances, spice and cocoa. On the palate it has a powerful attack, with a lively acidity and firm but ripe tannins.
