The nose is very clean and correct although it lacks a little complexity and flair: straightforward black fruits, cedar and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate shows a little hardness at first, but softens with aeration and soon adopts a more succulent texture with ripe black cherries, Doris plum and bilberry. The 2004 Fleur Cardinale is a gorgeous deep, rich wine, pure maroon colour. Rather shy nose to start that takes some coaxing and then aromas of red plum, boysenberry, cassis, fennel seed, cedar and suede unfurl. Lovely nose! Full bodied, dry and still surprisingly tannic on the palate, but good fruit extract and pitched acidity. The flavours are all deep red and black fruits, lots of black plum, a bit of bramble, charred oak, sous bois and chalk. Very smooth and nicely integrated.
