Salvano Saverio

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Very pale mahogany red, watery in texture and weak rim. On the nose are cranberries and brown sugar with just a touch of sweet pea perfume. Wonderful sweetness in the mouth, with golden sultanas over the tart dried cranberries. The tartness is lovely and balances out the sweetness of the wine very well. There is so much complexity in the mid-palate that you can hold this wine in your mouth for ages, but eventually you have to swallow. And when you do there is an explosion of flavour which, after a brief flare of heat, works itself into a very long black licorice and aniseed aftertaste. …

With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. …

Nobile di Montepulciano is a red wine with a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montepulciano, Italy. The wine is made primarily from the Sangiovese grape varietal (known locally as Prugnolo gentile) (minimum 70%), blended with Canaiolo Nero (10%–20%) and small amounts of other local varieties such as Mammolo. This firm and fruity port from the excellent 1977 vintage is delightful with a medium deep rim, a powerful bouquet with rich, intense jammy fruit, cherry and plum. Also, like rum soaked raisins. There is good cocoa and cherry on the palate, nice white pepper and a lot of tobacco and mint on the finish.
