Barolo, 1985

Giordano

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1985

Saint Estephe, 2me Cru Classe

***94 Points, Jeanie Cho Lee***
***95 Parker Points ***

"A fully mature Cos at its prime; delicious to drink with seamless texture and velvety tannins. Several different bottles opened in one evening prove this is a solid Cos that is the epitome of its 'old style' when subtlety was prized more than power."
* Jeannie Cho Lee, 2014*

"The 1985 from cask could have been a lighter version of the 1982 and 1953 vintages. Forward, with a fabulously scented bouquet of pain grille and concentrated red and black fruits (especially black cherries), it is rich, lush, long, and medium to full-bodied.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1985

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, Level vts, label damage

94 points Wine Journal

Reviews: " it remains a sublime Claret. The nose here has more graphite/pencil box signature, wonderful definition, the cigar box aromas then intensifying with aeration with red-berried fruit, bergamot and redcurrant. The palate is imbued with wonderful poise and elegance, not a powerful or tannic Mouton like the ’86, but still very harmonious and exuding freshness from start until finish with hints of tobacco and a hint of Lapsang Souchong lacing aftertaste. Dolcetto d'Alba, 1985

Tenuta Cà du Russ

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Excellent Provenance. These bottles of Fonseca 1985 Vintage Port have been shipped straight from Fonseca's Cellars in Oporto to our cellars in Fordingbridge. They are in perfect condition.

The 1985 Fonseca Vintage Port has a lovely nose of maturing port, finely styled and just screaming quality. The palate carries a svelte texture, with a creamy, flattering character. There is purity, balance, a clean, bright quality and despite this lots of appealing grip. This has great impact, and yet is so welcoming and alluring. Excellent wine, and a great example of the vintage. (November 2006).

Hooper's Port, 1985

Vintage Port

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Surprisingly opaque and purple, this port has a tightly knit but compact structure, fine depth of fruit, full body, yet seems to tail off in the finish. One of the more tannic and closed ports of this otherwise charming, precocious vintage. (1/1989)

Wine Spectator
Medium purple-ruby with fresh raspberry and chocolate aromas, full-bodied with plenty of raspberry flavors, silky medium tannins and a fresh finish. (12/1989)

Kopke Port, 1985

Colheita Port in Original Kopke box as illustrated

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Review:
The 1985 has a topaz color with glints of fiery orange. The nose of vanilla and toasted almonds leads to buttery rich caramel flavors with hints of dried strawberries, finishing with soft Columbian coffee and pink grapefruit zest.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel.

Periquita, 1985

José Maria da Fonseca

Periquita is renowned for being the first ever, in Portugal, bottled red wine. That’s where its originality comes from. And existing since 1850 we’ve been around to celebrate the Portuguese way of life: laid-back, relaxed, warm, fruity and with a spicy nose. That’s what Portugal is all about and that we want you to enjoy. The history of Periquita is interwoven with the story of José Maria da Fonseca itself, beginning in the 1820s when the founding father of the company, José Maria da Fonseca arrived in Lisbon and bought several local properties. One such purchase, most probably in 1846, was Cova da Periquita.

Recioto, 1985

Righetti Luigi

"Recioto," as in "Recioto della Valpolicella," refers to a dessert wine made from grapes that were dried on mats after picking. This process turns the grapes closer to raisins, concentrating the flavors. The wines are lovely and taste how you'd expect raisins-turned-wine to taste, rich and sweet.

Nevertheless, a delicious texture on entry, supple and stylish, although with a very firm weight, firm tannins and good acids.
