Barbera d'Asti, 1993

Bersano

Barbera is a wine of prestige, rich colors that refer generally to the ruby purple, just what clothes cardinals; the bouquet is ample and composite, with fruity notes of blackberry, cherry, strawberry and red fruit jam and spicy aromas reminiscent of cinnamon, vanilla, green pepper.

Barolo, 1993

Giacomo Borgogno

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Cannonau Di Sardegna, 1993

Jerzu

The Cannonau (also known as Cannonao, Cannonadu or Canunau) is the most popular wine from the island of Sardinia. It's mostly produced in the centre of Sardinia, even if we can find production of this famous wine in all the island. The grapes used for this Sardinian wine is the Cannonau. (At least 90 % of this grapes has to be used to be certified as original Cannonau). Cannonau is a very "strong wine" so it should be used with elaborate red meat and some types of cheese.

Chateau Clinet, 1993

Pomerol

"L'Eglise-Clinet is one of the best-situated vineyards in Pomerol, and proprietor/winemaker, Denis Durantou, is one of the most meticulous producers in Bordeaux. The vineyard is composed of tracts of very old vines (one planted in 1930). The wine, which is made from extremely small yields of two tons per acre, is normally a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, all of it aged in 60% new oak casks. This wine may merit a higher rating. I am not a fan of red wines with green overtones, so perhaps the spicy, green peppery bouquet held my score down. Nevertheless, this deep ruby/purple-coloured wine possesses an undeniably grilled meat, smoky, peppery, sweet, fruity nose that is evolved and intense.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1993

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

"One of the most successful Medocs of the vintage, Cos d'Estournel's 1993 exhibits an opaque dark purple colour, and a heady, sweet, pure, blackcurrant bouquet that roars from the glass. With surprising richness, fat, and glycerin, tasters would never suspect that this medium-bodied, elegant yet authoritatively-flavoured wine emerged from such a difficult vintage. The wine's low acidity and roundness guarantees 12-14 years of drinkability. This is a splendid success in an irregular vintage. Cos d'Estournel is clearly producing wines that are often of first-growth potential." Rating 89/100

Chateau Haut Brion, 1993

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru ClassePessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 90 Points Robert parker ***

"Quite a surprise in a difficult vintage, a strict selection and the superb terroir of Haut Brion triumphed over a very challenging year that produced many hard, relatively herbaceous wines. The color is a surprisingly saturated deep plum/ruby. Some sweet berry fruit intermixed with menthol, graphite, damp earth, and a hint of mushroom emerges in this medium-bodied, very elegant Haut Brion that is still firmly structured but has sweet tannin and surprising length and ripeness. The wine will always represent a sleeper style. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015. Last tasted, 11/02.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1993

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

A successful wine for Lafite, this dark ruby/purple-coloured 1993 is tightly-wound, medium-bodied, with a closed set of aromatics that reluctantly reveal hints of sweet blackcurrant fruit, weedy tobacco, and lead pencil scents. Polished and elegant, with Lafite's noble restraint, this is an excellent, classy, slightly austere wine. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020. (Robert Parker)

Chateau Magnol, 1993

Haut Medoc Barton & Guestier

This 1993 wine from the Haut Medoc region in Bordeaux displays a garnet colour with floral, herbs and mint aromas on the nose. Dried fruit and cherries on the palate with a little vanilla and spice. Although the nose is much more expressive than the palate, the acidity and tannin are balanced and the wine shows a medium and enjoyable finish.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1993

Chateau de Beaucastel

89 points Average Cellar Tracker Score

A fairly strong wine from a weak vintage. This wine benefits from about 2 hours decanting to allow the nose to open up into an excellent example of aged CdP. Light in colour, and decent colour at the rim, no true bricking. Complex, with the black fruits playing lead and the usual Rhone notes playing a background note. Long, long finish. A solid wine.

It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant.

Marquis de Caussade, 1993

Vintage Armagnac

Amber core with a bronze rim; shows mellow walnut, warm spices, cocoa and prunes on the nose. Mellow attack on the palate finishing on a delicious freshness and texture.

Armagnac is a grape brandy produced in the Gascony region of south-west France, as it has been since at least the 15th century. A fuller-bodied (some would say rustic) style of brandy when compared to Cognac, it is only distilled once and is often aged for many years (decades in some cases) and makes an excellent digestif.
