Tignanello, 1988

New

Antinori
Magnum Bottle (1.5 Lt)

Antinori's Tignanello, one of the first proprietary red Tuscan table wines, is gorgeous in 1988. The color is deep ruby/purple and the nose offers up penetrating aromas of sweet red and black fruits and toasty new oak. In the mouth, this medium to full-bodied wine offers wonderfully precise flavors, excellent richness, good acidity, soft tannins, and a spicy, long, rich finish. Robert Parker Wine Advocate 1992.

The Tignanello website proclaims.. "If you could see the vineyards of Chianti Classico from space, I’m sure the Tignanello vineyard would be the easiest to spot. Each row has been painstakingly covered with bright white stones along the entire length of each trellis line.

Veuve Clicquot, 1988

Ponsardin Brut Champagne

The 1988 Veuve Clicquot scores an impressive 92 points on cellartracker.com. "Slight spritz on opening but no 'pop'. Warm canary yellow with a burnished gold undertone and very fine streams of microscopic bubbles. Very complex nose including some rancio, as expected, but also merde, hay, apricot, butterscotch and dried mushroom. Crisp and cool entry. Nicely full and concentrated in the mouth. Lots of mature flavours of yellow stone fruits, more hay, rancio, wet stone and tingly acidity. Complex with a long, off dry finish. Rather intriguing and very tasty. Very well balanced. Quite delicious actually.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1987

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (Level in neck )

** 88-90 Points - WIne Journal **

Reviews:
" Light brick core. Tawny rim. Delicate leaf/minty nose. Quite earthy and mature on palate. Well-balanced, better than Lafite. Moderate concentration but quite austere and classic. Drink soon. Tasted amongst in a collectors gnome garden in Switzerland at 10am! Tasted again at the SuperBOWL and making perfect sense with a leg of lamb. A slightly diffuse, tobacco scented nose followed by a palate of moderate concentration with cedar and tobacco. Quite a soft texture but with vibrant acidity. A gentleman’s claret." Chateau Talbot, 1986

St Julien, 4me Cru Classe

The 1986 Chateau Talbot is one of the most outstanding wines from a very good 1986 vintage. It has been rated in the outstanding category by critics

Reviews:
Parker - 96 Points The Wine advocate.
"It's my gut feeling that the 1986 is, along with the '82, the finest Talbot made at this estate since the legendary '45. The fact that there are 40,000 cases of this wine is good news for the consumer, as there will be plenty to go around. The wine, which has been so special since the first taste from cask, is classically structured, with a penetrating fragrance of peppery, spicy, weedy black currants and tar, an enormous concentration of flavor on the palate, and staggering length.

Fonseca Port, 1986

Guimaraens Vintage Port

In undeclared vintages Fonseca bottle Guimaraens, provided the quality of the fruit is sufficient. This has a good depth of colour, with a moderate red-tawny hue. The nose has exotic notes of musky scent and spiced woods, together with some chocolate edged fruit. The palate has an impressive texture and sweetness immediately apparent on entry. Good fruit and a nice backbone of soft tannins. Elegant, with a touch of complexity, with balance, very much in the house style.

Tokaji, 1986

Szamarodni, Monimpex

Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labeling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot. Creating the botrytised ('aszú') grapes for which the region is famous. A wonderful sweet wine from this renowned producer.

Bairrada, 1985

Frei Joao

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Barolo, 1985

Saverio Fontana - Riserva Burgo

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.
