1982 Chateau Malescot St-Exupery

Margaux 3me Cru Classe

Deep garnet hue turning mahogany. A ripe nose: raspberry, cooked meat and leather. Quite intense though it tails off in the glass. The palate is better than expected. Medium-bodied, nice balance though lacking any Margaux typicity (this more like a Saint Julien.) Irony. Pretty yet simple. Clean finish though herbaceous. To my great surprise, the wine improved the following day, becoming more harmonious and cohesive. Perhaps decanting and letting this wine rest is advisable.

Barbaresco, 1982

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Barolo, 1982

Montezemolo - Enrico VI

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Beychevelle, 1982

St julien 4me cru classe
MAGNUM 1.5 Lt

*** 94 Points - Parker ***

"Beautifully sweet, slightly herbaceous black currant, licorice, and earthy notes emerge from this nearly opaque, dark ruby/purple-tinged 1982. Compared to the more elegant, feminine-styled wine often produced here, it is a beast. Dense, thick, rich, concentrated, and impressive, it can be drunk now and over the next two decades." Chateau Branaire-Ducru, 1982

St Julien, 4th Growth Classification

Scoring and impressive 92 Points, Robert Parker writes of this wine... "A strong effort for this estate, the 1982 exhibits sweet aromas of plums, licorice, earth, and flowers. The tannins are slightly rustic, but the sweetness of the fruit, the broad expansive mouthfeel, and the wine’s full maturity represent a classic Bordeaux at the top of its game. Enjoy it over the next 5-8 years." Wine Advocate 2009

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, 1982

St Julien 2me Cru Classe

*** 96 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews: "The 1982 is still 5-8 years away from full maturity, but it exhibits a dense ruby/plum/garnet color to the rim as well as a sweet perfume of forest floor, spice box, cedar, and copious quantities of black fruits. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully pure with sweet tannins, this wine has aged more slowly than I initially expected. It is the finest Ducru Beaucaillou produced after the 1961 and before the 2003." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2009

Chateau Durfort Vivens, 1982

Margaux 2nd Growth Classification

Medium garnet in colour with yellowing and bricking towards the rim. This is very much alive. Wet leaves, forest floor, sweet tobacco, raspberry, red cherry, vanilla, and white flowers on the nose. There is a lot of sweetly perfumed classic Margaux aromatics. Secondary and tertiary notes dominate but there is still a lot of fruit left here leading to a nice long finish.

Chateau Figeac, 1982

St Emilion, Grand Cru

** 94/100 Parker **

"This is actually a younger, more concentrated wine than the 1990. A dense plum/garnet color with a slight lightening at the edge is followed by a sensational Figeac nose of mint, fruitcake, Asian spices, gobs of sweet black and red fruits, and a smoky component in the background. Medium to full-bodied with lovely freshness, this 1982 appears to be fully mature, but it tasted the same a decade ago, and it should hold at this level for another 10-20 years" Parker, Wine Advocate 2009

Chateau La Lagune, 1982

Haut Medoc 5eme Grand Cru Classe

*** 92 Points - Robert Parker ***

Reviews "This is a sumptuous La Lagune that has hit full maturity but shows no signs of decline. The color is a dense, opaque dark garnet. The wine offers up smoky notes intermixed with jammy black cherries, currants, licorice, and earth. The wine is thick, unctuously textured, with still some moderate tannin to shed. The wine is loaded, very rich, thick, and juicy, with very complex aromatics and surprising weight and power in the mouth. To my thinking, there has never been a more powerful, concentrated La Lagune ever produced." Robert Parker Wine Advocate.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1982

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** Robert Parker 100 points ***

This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown off the backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years of life, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondary nuances as cedar and spice box. The creme de cassis, underlying floral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateau accomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082! Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most of my supply before I kick the bucket.

Chateau Talbot, 1982

St Julien 4th Growth Classification

Rating an exceptional 95 Points, Robert Parker describes this wine as follows...
"Along with the 1986, the 1982 is one of the greatest Talbots ever made. Far more evolved than its stablemate, Gruaud Larose, it exhibits a dense garnet color to the rim along with a huge, sweet, exotic nose of charcoal, beef blood, licorice, herbs, and black fruits. A hint of figs suggests borderline overripeness, but the wine remains fleshy and full-bodied with sweet tannin and an expansive, heady mouthfeel. While fully mature, it should hold for another decade." Parker, Wine Advocate # 183
Jun 2009.

Rating 95/100 (Parker)

"One of those wines that frequently offers pleasant surprises in mature vintages.

Croft Port, 1982

Vintage Port

A medium-boded Croft port, the 1982 vintage port has a light and fruity aroma, backed up by delicious dark fruits on the palate with a sweetness that hints at burnt sugar at times. A well composed port that will perhaps not age as well as other vintage ports from this era, but is beautifully poised for drinking now.

Dolcetto, 1982

Giordano

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

Dolomore Port, 1982

Vintage Port

The 1982 Dolomore Vintage Port is impressively deep red in colour; opaque. Gentle nose bringing a bit of dusty cherry. The lovely thick texture that is starting to seem typical of the vintage. Fresh fruit on the palate, good levels of acidity keeping the freshness and an interesting sage-leaf twist. Medium-bodied, modest in intensity and still quite acidic. Nice aftertaste, with a big flaring finish that has lots of cherry and green wood tannins. Fine port..
