Sangiovese di Romagna, 1989

Tini - Corvit

Good-quality Sangiovese is prized for its high acid, firm tannins and balanced nature. Savory flavors of dark cherries and black stone fruit are characteristic, and may be backed by secondary notes of tomato leaf and dried herbs. The use of oak has become more popular and this coaxes richer flavors from the grapes, tending toward plum and wild raspberry.

Warre's Vintage Port, 1989

Quinta Da Cavadinha Vintage Port

Brick-red core, broad amber rim; fine, perfumed, nicely evolved floral, esteva (gum cistus) aromas, open but possibly with a bit more to give; soft, sweet, and fully mature, with beautifully balanced cherry fruit. For me, the best of the '79.

The 1988 Fonseca Guimaraens from the very good vintage has a deep red/burgundy colour with a with narrowbrick rim. Rich, jammy fruit bouquet. Aromas of prune and treacle. Some attractive bottle
mature notes coming through. Full, intense palate with firm fresh fruit flavours. Attractive rich, rounded wine with good texture. Firm dark chocolate finish.

In the early 1950’s, the rising demand for vintage ports led Fonseca
Guimaraens to create a second vintage port under the ‘Guimaraens’ label
in ‘non-classic’, or undeclared years. Guimaraens vintage port is
produced from the same three Fonseca quintas in the Cima Corgo which
provide the backbone of Fonseca’s vintage ports in declared years.

Barolo, 1988

Marchesi di Barolo - Le Lune

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1988

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

A year which was marked by a great lack of water in summer and by harvesting carried out in perfect conditions.
1988 is a vintage typical of the Médoc. Built like a Romanesque cathedral with all that is necessary to seduce in conditions of austerity. A very generous, wild bouquet with hints of red fruits, roast, pear, bilberry, fur, liquorice. Full and concentrated in the mouth, it is stout and very munchy. An imposing finish. A wine which will benefit greatly as it ages.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1988

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

1988 produced richly coloured Cabernet and Merlot wines, that are tannic and powerfully structured. A great vintage, gorgeously seductive and remains the most complex wine of this Century, the quintessence of Lafite-Rothschild.

This deeply colored wine exhibits the telltale Lafite bouquet of cedar, subtle herbs, dried pit fruits, minerals, and cassis. Extremely concentrated, with brillantly focused flavors and huge tannins, this backward yet impressively endowed Lsfite Rothschild may well turn out to be the wine of the vintage. Anticipated maturity:2000-2035
Score: 94 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (95),

Chateau Lascombes, 1988

Margaux 2nd Growth Classification

A beautiful example. On opening a beautiful cedar bouquet, but subdued in the mouth; after a couple of hours in the decanter this is really singing, still some red fruit, some meat, and that classic mature Bordeaux feel. Cellar Tracker Review.

Chateau LeTertre Roteboeuf, 1988

St Emilion Grand Cru Classe

***92 Points, Robert Parker***

A sleeper vintage for proprietor Mitjavile’s beloved Tertre Roteboeuf, the 1988 has a deep plum/garnet color and a gorgeous nose of earth, underbrush, cherry cough syrup, licorice, and caramel. It is full-bodied, very pure, ripe, with loads of concentration, yet good definition and structure. No, it is not as dense as the 1989 nor as flamboyant and flashy as the 1990, but this is a classic Tertre Roteboeuf that should continue to drink well for a few more years.

"Slight aging on rim. A rich nose of minerals and blackcurrant. Medium-bodied with classic Mouton style. This has more fleshy fruit than other Firsts: quite rounded blackberry and tar. Very Cabernet dominated with a little more expression that Lafite 1988. A classic claret in every sense." Neil Martin

Nebbiolo D'Alba, 1988

Terre del Barolo - MAGNUM 1,5 litre -

The Nebbiolo d'Alba has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Baron de Sigognac, 1987

Armagnac (Comes in Original Sigognac Wooden Box as illustrated)

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in a perfectly simple wooden box.

Bordeaux, 1987

Chateau Roquebert

Bordeaux, in the south-west of France, needs little introduction to anyone with an interest in wine. One of the world's most prolific wine regions, it also manages to rank among the most famous and prestigious. The secrets of Bordeaux's wine success (other than magical Bordeaux Blend) are its three trump cards: diversity, quality and quantity. The majority of Bordeaux wines are the dry, medium-bodied reds that made the region famous.

" Light brick core. Tawny rim. Delicate leaf/minty nose. Quite earthy and mature on palate. Well-balanced, better than Lafite. Moderate concentration but quite austere and classic. Drink soon. Tasted amongst in a collectors gnome garden in Switzerland at 10am! Tasted again at the SuperBOWL and making perfect sense with a leg of lamb. A slightly diffuse, tobacco scented nose followed by a palate of moderate concentration with cedar and tobacco. Quite a soft texture but with vibrant acidity. A gentleman’s claret." Chateau Potensac, 1987

Medoc

This 1987 wine from Potensac outshines a mediocre vintage. Tannins are still present and there is sufficient fruit to balance the wine. Just a bit of bricking, slight sedimentation, colour still dark purple. Floral fruity nose, with a trace of iron. Slight chalky finish, clearly more tannic than it's age suggests. Suggest something meaty to go with the tannins.
