Valtellina, 1982

Fratelli Bettini

Valtellina is one of Italy’s most dramatic wine regions, located in Lombardy, the vineyards are located on steep mountains. The principal grape variety is Chiavennasca (the local name for Piedmont’s Nebbiolo and an Italian grape varietal that has been cultivated since medieval times here). The DOCG wines are generally comprised of at least 90% Chiavennasca and then blended with other quality local grapes like Brugnola, Rossola, Pignola. Then there is a DOC Valtellina Rosso (also called Rosso di Valtellina DOC) which requires at least 80% of the blend be Chiavennasca and does not have minimum ageing requirements.

Veuve Clicquot, 1982

Ponsardin

Fantastic colour shows some age but still vibrant and fine bubbles. On the nose brioche, vanilla and to me lots of foie gras and apples of course. Completely different on the palate with lots of acidity and citrus shining through. This wine still has fruit and acidity enough to continue developing into a very fine old champagne.

1981 Madeira

D'Oliveiras Verdelho Madeira

"Aromas of raisin and coffee. Taste corresponds to aromas, but adds fresh mint and nuts. Sweet, but with balancing acidity. Complex.
By far the best of the few Madeiras I have tasted. (92 points)
" Cellar Tracker Review"

Try this medium-dry Madeira as an aperitif or with your main course. It is a perfect accompaniment to smoked ham, smoked salmon and various cooked meats as well as seafood. Try it with cottage cheese, ripened cheeses, nut-like cheeses and hazelnuts.

1981 D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1981

Sercial Madeira

Raisins, plums, walnuts and a hint of prunes in this wonderful Madeira. The scent fills the room as soon as it is open. Pouring it into the glass you notice the crystal clear golden brown color with hints of red. You swirl and smell, noticing the raisins and the walnuts. You take a sip, the flavors of raisins and plums fills the front of your mouth, not too sweet. You swish and swallow, the walnuts taking over in the back of the mouth. The taste lingers…

1981 Ryst-Dupeyon Armagnac, 1981

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1981 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

J W Hart, 1981

Sale

Colheita Single Harvest Port
Includes original carton gift box

Having spent at least seven and, in this case, a lot more years in cask, this beautiful 1981 colheita port from JW Hart is essentially a tawny port with a vintage date. On the nose it displays seductive marmalade, orange peel, citrus compote and quince jelly aromas. Luscious on the palate, although it has been bottled in 2013, this port shows great freshness with a lively acidity that balances the intensity of fruit beautifully. The flavours continue to evolve and alongside the jammy fruit aromas, caramel, allspice, walnuts and dried mushrooms emerge offering layers of complexity. The alcohol

Bright brown colour, with greenish nuances. Presents a bouquet with intense aromas of dried fruits, delicate spices notes and a sweet touch of honey. In the taste it is full, unctuous and velvety. This wine overflows seduction and an enormous refinement. A feeling that is extended in the long and complex finish.

Reviews:
Dark tawny with orangey-red highlights. I wouldn't quite call it mahogany in colour, but it's close. Very dark, and lots of brown.
Nose: As is typical, lots of (to me) Madeira-like notes. Some leather, some dark aromatic wood like sandalwood, some apricot, and a bit of spirit.

40 Year Old Messias

Tawny Port

Very pale amber/tawny/orange colour. Fine and delicate aromas of hazelnuts and candied citrus. Quince marmalade character, delicate in style, with finesse and poise. Seemingly quite dry in style towards the finish (not as obviously rich as some here), and supremely refined.

Blandys Madeira, 1981

Malmsey Madeira 37.5cl HALF BOTTLE

New Stock Arriving Shortly please allow 5 days for delivery

Reviews
Deep amber-red in colour; lifted, toasted and singed on the nose, really rather wonderful, this sings from the glass; gentle honeyed sweetness, super-concentrated mid-palate, so pure yet complex too with a toasty-savoury back drop, rich (100g/l residual sugar) but the acidity running through leads to a vibrant finish. Nothing soupy about this: wonderful precision and definition.
Score: 18.5 Richard Mayson, richardmayson.com, January 2019

For 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine. The Blandy’s are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company.

Chateau Boyd-Cantenac, 1981

Margaux, 3rd Growth Classification

Since the early 1930s, Boyd Cantenac has been owned by the Guillemet family who also run the nearby Chateau Pouget. The proprietor actually resides at Chateau Pouget since there is no official chateau at Boyd Cantenac, and the wines are vinified and cellared in a warehouse adjoining Pouget. Despite this arrangement, the wines of Boyd Cantenac are always produced with an overriding sense of attention to detail. This wine has a crisp sage and onion spiciness and silky leathery tannins. Crisp, intense, soft and fragrant, very dry. Drink now.

Chateau Leoville Poyferre, 1981

St Julien 2me Growth Classification

A deep tawny rim with a mahogany core. This has a delightful nose, very good intensity with notes of cooked meats, roasted chestnut, toffee and a touch of marzipan. It smells as if it is from a hot vintage! After five minutes in the glass, it become a little muffled but develops a touch of mint. The palate certainly has more fruit concentration than the 1980, a rounded texture, quite sharp acidity with notes of sour cherry, a touch of leather and a dry, rather gamey, but attenuated finish. Not bad for a 1981
