Messias | Caves Messias Wine and Port

We have been working with Messias to import their wines and Ports for over 10 years. What originally attracted us to them was their fabulous range of Colheita Ports dating back to 1947. However, when we visited their cellars we discovered an amazing collection of Vintage Ports dating back to 1960. In 2019 We organised a complete vertical tasting of Messias for The Port Forum . The wines were found to have "aged gracefully and showed a lovely elegance and delicacy while still being full of flavours. You don't see them very much in the UK, but they are delicious!"

About Messias

Caves Messias is a renowned winery located in the Bairrada region of Portugal. Founded in 1926 by Messias Baptista, who served as chairman until 1973, the company has built a strong reputation for producing high-quality wines, including sparkling wines, still wines, and fortified wines such as Port. Their commitment to quality and consistency has earned them a strong reputation among wine enthusiasts and critics.

Quinta do Cachao

Messias' most famous estate, Quinta do Cachao, sits in the subregion Cima Corgo, the most inhospitable area within the Douro. This estate takes its name from the Cachao de Valeira: a large rock which prevented navigation down the river, and the reason the subregion was not used to cultivate grapes until the early 19th century. The Cachao was destroyed in 1807, allowing estates to spring up along the valley, including the eponymous Quinta. Vines on the estate were first planted in 1845 by Barao do Seixo, before being sold to Afonso Cabral years on. Cabrals family kept the property throughout the Phylloxera blight that nearly destroyed European wine, before finally selling it to the Messias family in 1956, the family proceeded to buy the neighbouring estate of Quinta do Rei two years later.
