In 1967, the gods favored Italy, blessing both Tuscany and Piedmont with an exceptionally fine vintage often touted as the "vintage of the decade". Bordeaux was also good but a touch on the light side, with the best wines being from Pomerol. Burgundy was similar. Port was also reasonably good, but it was really Italy’s year. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 59 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1967 Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
  • Burmester 1967 Colheita Port
  • Barbaresco 1967 Gaja
  • Barolo 1967 Giordano
  • Chateau Margaux 1967 1er Grand Cru Classe
  • Chateau Mouton Cadet 1967 Baron Philippe de Rothschild

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The first scheduled colour television broadcasts from six transmitters covering the main population centres in England began on BBC2 for certain programmes, the first being live coverage from the Wimbledon Championships. A full colour service (other than news programmes) began on BBC2 on 2 December.
Eurovision: UNITED KINGDOM with the song "Puppet on a String" by Sandie Shaw
Top Grossing Movie: The Jungle Book

Bordeaux: The 1967 vintage is generally considered to be a good, solid vintage that favoured the vineyards in regions that harvested early such as Pomerol, Graves and St Emilion. The 1967 wines will not improve further with age and are still very drinkable and pleasant.

Italian: 1967 Italian wines represent an outstanding vintage which was probably the best of the decade. Good growing conditions particularly in Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines that will last for many years to come.

Portugal: Making a great wine gift for any birthday or anniversary, the 1967 port vintage is a very good vintage that was somewhat overshadowed by the exceptional 1966. It was declared by about 15 shippers. The 1967 ports showed well at recent tastings; they have good structure and elegant fruit and will keep for many years to come.

    Reviews:
Lovely dark caramel colour, with some truffle and tea notes, edges of olive and green fruits (fig). The maturity on the palate is obvious, again with fabulous sweetness and brown sugar richness, Muscovado and walnuts, but the hallmark of the fresh orange and lemon acidity plays against that and the coffee and walnut cake sweetness and richness.

    Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac, 1967

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
    50cl bottle

The "Millesime" on the label of this 1967 vintage Armagnac denotes that the grapes used to produce this Armagnac were harvested in that year. Over the decades, this Armagnac would have undergone significant aging, developing complex flavours and aromas.

    Tasting Notes
Deep amber colour indicating long aging in oak barrels. Prominent aromas and flavours of prunes, apricots, and figs alongside sweet and inviting hints of vanilla, toffee, and caramel, a result of the interaction between the spirit and the oak. Subtle undertones of cinnamon, nutmeg and cedar and rancio, a characteristic scent in well-aged Armagnac, giving it a nutty, almost earthy quality.

In the 1960's his nephew Giovanni came to lend a hand and was instrumental in shaping the winery and its future development. Up to 2009, Giovanni's son Alessandro looked after the beautiful vineyards situated in the long hills surrounding Piemonte. In recent years, due to Alessandro's passing, the winery ceased production.

    Barolo, 1967

    Contratto, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

1967 Barolo – Contratto (Piedmont, Italy)

The 1967 vintage in Piedmont produced classically styled wines, favouring structure, acidity and steady evolution rather than overt concentration. From the historic house of Contratto, founded in 1867 and long associated with traditional Piedmontese winemaking, this Barolo reflects an era when extended ageing in large oak casks and patient bottle maturation defined the region’s character.

    Tasting Notes:
Now showing a mature brick-garnet hue with amber highlights at the rim, the nose is gently evolved and expressive. Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal and redcurrant are layered with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor.

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

    Barolo, 1967

    Pico della Mirandola

The 1967 Barolo DOC by Pico della Mirandola is a classic, traditionally styled Nebbiolo from the Langhe, produced in an era when Barolo was crafted for long aging and slow bottle evolution.

Tasting Notes: Now fully mature, it likely shows evolved aromas of dried rose petals, red cherry, and orange peel, layered with tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, truffle, and earthy forest-floor character. On the palate it is expected to be elegant and fragile, with fully softened tannins, integrated acidity, and a light to medium body leading to a long, fading, and refined finish.

Serving & Food Pairing: Best served at 16–18°C, with very careful handling and minimal decanting to avoid disturbing sediment.

Gaja Barbaresco 1967 is an extraordinarily rare and highly collectible wine from one of Italy's most iconic producers. Angelo Gaja transformed the reputation of Barbaresco on the world stage, and mature bottles from this pioneering era are increasingly difficult to find. For collectors of fine Italian wine, few names command greater respect than Gaja.

Produced from Nebbiolo in the historic vineyards surrounding Barbaresco, this wine represents a fascinating snapshot of Piedmontese winemaking before the modern era. Bottled more than half a century ago, it embodies the tradition, craftsmanship and longevity that have made the region's greatest wines legendary among enthusiasts and collectors.

    Gaja, 1967

    Gaja Sori San Lorenzo, Barbaresco
    RARE FIRST VINTAGE

The 1967 Gaja Sorì San Lorenzo holds a significant place in the history of Italian winemaking, marking the inaugural release of this esteemed single-vineyard Barbaresco by the Gaja winery. Founded in 1859 in Barbaresco, Piedmont, the Gaja family has been instrumental in elevating the region's wines to global acclaim. The term "Sorì" refers to a hilltop with a southern exposure in the local dialect, while "San Lorenzo" denotes the patron saint of Alba's cathedral, reflecting the vineyard's heritage. This pioneering 1967 vintage set the stage for Gaja's future single-vineyard offerings, such as Sorì Tildìn in 1970 and Costa Russi in 1978.

Macon is the name for the red and white wines which come from the Mâconnais section of Burgundy, France. This region is the most southerly in Burgundy, and also the largest. There are 42 villages in the Mâconnais region, broken out into seven designations: Macon, Macon Superieur, Macon Village, Pouilly Fuissé, Pouilly Loche, Pouilly Vinzele, and Saint Veran. The majority of wines from Macon are red wines, using the gamay noir, pinot noir, and pinot gris grapes. These are light wines, and should be drunk young. They go well with red meats and mild cheeses.

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Thick in texture and flavoured with sweet red apples combine to give an impressive palate presence. Awesome balance and a terrific palate. Fragrant fruit drives the aftertaste, followed by a delicious cherry finish with a great length. This is a very fine vintage port and was my wine of the night. 94/100. Decanted 13 hours. AHB.

The 1967 harvest in the Douro Valley produced wines of notable concentration and balance, well suited to long oxidative ageing. While the year was not widely declared for Vintage Port, it proved particularly successful for Colheita Ports — wines from a single harvest that mature slowly in seasoned oak casks for many decades before bottling.

Rochas 1967 Colheita Port has spent many years ageing in wood, developing the remarkable depth and complexity that only long cask maturation can provide. The bouquet reveals layers of dried fig, raisin and caramelised orange peel, accompanied by notes of toasted almond, walnut and warm spice.

This gentle giant is one of the very best of the Ports I have had from the lackluster 1967 vintage, which managed to produce a few very well-made VPs. The Sandeman is still in great shape.
