1982 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port: 1982 was a good Port Vintage, with elegant and aromatic wines. Although a few Houses declared the Vintage, most made Quinta wines.

Italian: 1982 was a tremendous vintage for big, rich and fruity Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The grapes were in superb condition for an early harvest and, thanks to the wonderful summer, the crop was large as well as very healthy. Wines from Tuscany such as Chianti or Brunello were also in fine form producing ripe, flavoursome, well-balanced wines. These Italians would make a great 40 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary this year.

Bordeaux: The 1982 was an outstanding wine vintage that produced some of the most complex profound Bordeaux wines since 1961. Great weather made this vintage a success - harvests were boosted by a September heat-wave, the result of which was super-ripe grapes, both in respect of sugar content and physiology. The lesser wines from the St Emilion, Graves, Pomerol and Margaux regions are now fully mature. The heavyweight wines from these regions and St Julien, Pauillac are evolving slowly and will continue to do so for years to come.

Champagne: 1982 is an exceptionally fine, rich vintage for Champagne. Ideal weather conditions led to a good vintage, a relief after a disappointing run. A cold and frosty winter gave way to a coolish spring, but temperatures picked up later in the season. The flowering conditions in June were ideal, and summer was sunny and dry. The grapes were ripe by relatively early on in September, and showers mid-month helped them achieve near-perfection. The crop was one of the largest on record.

1982 Madeira

D'Oliveiras Boal Madeira

Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter.

1982 Porta dos Cavaleiros, 1982

Porta dos Cavaleiros, Dao Red Wine
Library Release

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Chateau Beychevelle, 1982

St julien 4me cru classe

*** 94 Points - Parker ***

"Beautifully sweet, slightly herbaceous black currant, licorice, and earthy notes emerge from this nearly opaque, dark ruby/purple-tinged 1982. Compared to the more elegant, feminine-styled wine often produced here, it is a beast. Dense, thick, rich, concentrated, and impressive, it can be drunk now and over the next two decades." Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1982

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

This was an headline vintage of outstanding quality throughout Bordeaux, with ripeness levels not seen for many years. The style of wines proved a terrific shot in the arm for claret, especially on the US market. Indeed, some criticised the vintage at the time for an almost Napa-like (thus atypical) opulence and predicted a short life for the wines. Such criticisms have largely proved unfounded, and the top 1982s are still going strong, establishing the vintage as the most celebrated of the last 50 years. Lafite in particular has maintained a youthful character, developing harmony as it ages.

Reviews: This is a denser version of the 1990 that stylistically reminds me of what the young 1959 probably tasted like.

Chateau Pontet Canet, 1982

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

The 1982 Pontet Canet is now fully mature and drinking well. A fantastic gift for a 40th Anniversary in 1982

Reviews:
"A solidly made effort, the 1982 Pontet Canet reveals some pink at the edge, but it remains a medium-bodied wine offering hints of menthol and red as well as black currants. Although it lacks concentration, the sensuality and suppleness provided by the vintage character are still appealing." Robert Parker 2009.

90 points Wine Spectator
"Backward and structured, though a bit coarse. Brilliant, deep ruby color, with a hint of garnet on the edge. Currant, floral and berry aromas.

Crozes-Hermitage, 1982

Domaine de Thalabert Jaboulet

The 1982 Domaine Jaboulet has a medium ruby color with some definite bricking at the edge. The nose is glorious, classic Northern Rhone syrah - mainly smoke and meaty notes. On the palate, it is a fairly light wine but there is still a hint of raspberry fruit and classic flavours that echo the nose. A long finish and a silky texture (cellar tracker review 2019)

40+ year old Tawny Port in presentation box (75cl)

94 Points - Robert Parker

Tasting Notes:

The NV +40 Year Old Tawny Porto is a field blend bottled in 2014 with 114 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Personally, I like the 30 slightly more, but there are some stylistic differences and they are both very fine. The 30 is livelier and crisper. However, this +40 is distinguished by that "+." About 5% to 10% of the juice is from the 1944. That adds a layer of mahogany and molasses that the 30 does not have. I like them both a lot. Pick your nectar.

40+ year old White Tawny Port in presentation box (50cl)
Special Launch Offer | Only £69
94 Points - Robert Parker
(Regular Selling Price £99)

Tasting Notes:

The NV 40 Year White Port is a field blend bottled in 2019 with a bar-top cork, 20% alcohol and 112 grams of sugar. It is mainly a blend this year of the 1967 and 1970 (although different casks than those used for the 1970 White Colheita this issue). This seems fresher and livelier than the last release I saw (the 2018, which was not quite the same blend of vintages—another good reason to pay attention to bottling dates with age-indicated Ports). Not nearly as complex as its predecessor—which was more mature and seemed almost like a Tawny—this is nonetheless delectable.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1982

Quinta do Noval Nacional

86/100 Wine Spectator
90/100 Wine Doctor

Noval is particularly famous for its Nacional, a Port produced in some years only from a 2 hectare parcel at the heart of the Noval vineyard where ungrafted vines survive. This is remarkable, because phylloxera, the root munching aphid that necessitates grafting vines onto resistant American rootstock, is endemic in the Douro

"This a gloriously wild, rich, sensual port with a rich spicy nose and flavour and a sweet, full glorious length and aftertaste" Drink now - 2033. M Broadbent *****

1982 Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1982

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

Review by Robert Parker... "A spectacular performance for this wine, Cos d'Estournel's 1982 exhibits a dark ruby/purple color with light pink at the rim. Sweet aromas of jammy black fruits intermixed with roasted espresso and vanillin jump from the glass of this young, concentrated, full-bodied, succulent effort. An opulent texture, low acidity, and splendidly pure, concentrated, blackberry and cassis fruit suggest this 1982 can be drunk now, or cellared for another 15-20 years. An awesome wine!"
