The 2001 Quinta do Vesuvio is a very dark ruby colour. The Touriga Nacional’s tiny yields brought great concentration to the wine, while the Touriga Franca, due to the good weather during the harvest, achieved perfect ripening, creating wines of great elegance. The Tinta Barroca was very ripe at the time of picking, with a higher than average baumé, producing wines of excellent structure and ageing potential. Purple fading to red and finally pink at the rim. Rich blackberries on the nose along with very faint stewed strawberries. The tannins were powerful on Christmas day but mellowed some by the next evening. The blackberries carried through as a prominent flavor, but added a sourish note almost like a sour cherry. The finish starts out with a rich butter cookie note, but then quickly switches to grape stem.

Named after the first established English Port wine shipper in Oporto, Walter Maynard, this aged Port has been blended from historic stocks of tawny Port to give an average age of 50 years and is released under the new 50 year old tawny Port category.

Presented in a decanter, this is a powerful port with complex nuttiness aromas in harmony with spicy notes, warm roasted coffee and cinnamon hints from the long contact with oak wood during the ageing process. …

1975 was a declared vintage and the vintage ports have a lighter style. The 1975 Sandeman is well above average, represents good value and has a good provenance. It is a pale ruby colour. Morello cherries, black berries and liquorice on the nose which has a slightly roasted quality. Slightly treacle like on the palate, with notes of honey and mocha.
