Eiswein, 1972

Fred Pieroth Binger Bubenstud Eiswein Auslese

This 1972 Eiswein Auslese is very developed, powerful and quite tertiary nose with aromas of bruised apples, dried stone fruits, some golden raisins, a little bit of burnt sugar and a hint honeyed floral character. The wine is intense, acidic, moderately full-bodied and quite oily on the palate with pretty sweet flavors of pronounced golden raisins, some apple jam, a little bit of oxidative nuttiness, a hint of molasses and a touch of dried apricot. The high acidity makes the wine quite structured and keeps the sweetness at bay. The finish is quite developed and rather oxidative with long flavours.

Ryst-Dupeyon Armagnac, 1972

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1972 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Barolo, 1971

Marchesi di Barolo

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods with no problem at all.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, Level vts

Château Lafite Rothschild 1971 proves that Lafite Rothchild's wines always live up to its reputation, and it is the most consistent of first growths.

According to Jamie Goode (of wineanorak.com): "...the 1971s have consistently been undervalued. Thirty years' on, only the best of the vintage will still be at anything like their peak. But it's worth remembering that back in '71 Bordeaux wines were still made for long ageing. Yields have become considerably higher in recent years, and it's arguable that even the best properties no longer make such long-lived wines."

Reviews..
"Has an aroma like an aged Burgundy, with cherry and spice; flavor is mature, soft, very elegant.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1971

*** 87 Points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews:
"It is ten years since I last encountered this ’71. It unexpectedly has a deeper colour than the ’70, the nose certainly more mature than before, forsaking that mint aroma for meatier, dried blood/ferrous notes. The palate is medium-bodied without the weight and depth of the ’70, but still quite fresh and well-defined at first, though a little “frayed” towards the leafy finish. Fine.
