Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, 1976

Saint-Julien, 2eme Grand Cru classe

The 1976 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou had an earthy yet still lively nose with dried strawberry, cherry, crushed fall leaves, moist soil tones, dried florals, and minerals. On the palate, I found a lively and fresh expression, displaying wonderfully pure red fruits, with cedar, brown spice, licorice, minerals and brisk acidity. It finished long, lingering on minerals and spice with notes of lifted dried strawberry and inner floral tones. What a thoroughly enjoyable wine.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1976

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe (in neck, good label)

The 1976 Haut-Brion is medium ruby in color, with some amber creeping in at the edges. The wine has been fully mature since the early eighties, yet it is still drinking well. A spicy, earthy, oaky, moderately fruity bouquet offers elegance. On the palate, the wine is soft, round, medium bodied, and charming. Robert Parker.

Tasted at the Academie du Vin from ex-château bottles, the 1976 Haut Brion is actually a vintage that I have never tasted before... the bouquet has held up well with cocoa-tinged dark fruit, terracotta and dried blood. It feels a little diffuse, but it still rings of Haut Brion.

Chateau Margaux, 1976

Premier Grand Cru Classe (mid shoulder)

1976 will be remembered as the "drought year". This vintage could have been outstanding, but the rainy end to the summer firstly diluted the grapes and then forced us to harvest quickly before rot set in. Today, 1976 is a supple, almost smooth wine with a fine, distinguished and mature nose. It lacks the complexity and, especially, the power to be a true great wine. We look back emotionally on this time, when Château Margaux, which belonged to the Ginestet family.

Chateau Montrose, 1976

St Estephe 2me Cru classe
High Shoulder

Dense and deep colour. The rich nose is and complex, displaying aromas of black fruits, liquorice, pepper, smoke, tobacco and prune. Long and neat on the palate, delivering notes of ripe grapes, prune, and tobacco. The wine is harmonious, fine, light with a beautiful texture of ripe grapes
If the palate is harmonious, long, and soft, the finish is on the other hand, a little short with a tinge of bitterness (Chateau Montrose Website)

Spring was early, and the weather maintained fair and hot from April to June. Therefore, the blossoming took place in June (the mid-blossoming in June 5th) with no coulure nor millerandage due to the excellent climatic conditions.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1976

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (Base of neck)

Mahogany core with deep brick rim. The nose is actually better than I anticipated with some dusty black fruits, cedar a touch of game, but it certainly lacks vigour and cohesion. The palate is a little tawdry, slightly hollow with an cooked character that jars against some obvious green berries that found themselves fermenting. Linear towards the dry finish, moderate length.

Chateau Potensac, 1976

Medoc

This wine really lives up to the nature of the vintage. Tannins still present , but sufficient fruit to balance the wine. Just a bit of bricking, slight sedimentation, colour still dark purple. Floral fruity nose, with a trace of iron. Slight chalky finish, clearly more tannic than it's age suggests. Suggest something meaty to go with the tannins.

Chateau Trotanoy, 1976

Pomerol

About what you would anticipate from a well made Trotanoy from a modest vintage for the appelation. Qualitatively the same as the Petrus but sylistically different since there was a quite attractive topnote of soft summer strawberry. A bit of coarse tannin is still in the the background so the balance is slightly off kilter.

Chateau Yquem, 1976

Sauternes, 1st Growth Classification

Yquem is without doubt, one of the world's finest wine producers, of whom Robert Parker comments: "There is no other wine in the world like it, and there is no other luxury wine that can possibly justify its price as much as Yquem. The remarkable amount of painstaking labor necessary to produce the nectar known as Yquem is almost impossible to comprehend."

"The 1976 Yquem continues to go from strength to strength. Who can ignore the awesome bouquet of spices, honeyed fruit, pineapples, bananas, coconuts, and overripe melons? This full-bodied, viscous, luscious wine has been absolutely delicious since bottling, given its relatively low acidity and precocious personality.
