Barbaresco, 1975

Fontana Bianca

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

All Baron de Lustrac Armagnacs are aged in 420ltr oak barrels and sold as single vintages. The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in original wooden box.

There is appreciable weight in the mouth, refreshing as Sercial can often be, with a focused, marine-influenced finish.

This is a superb colheita port from Calem. It has a beautiful dark tawny colour and a smooth bouquet of classic tawny notes (wood, caramel etc.). The palate was more acidic and a bit alcoholic which prickled a pit on the tounge. Not terribly sweet, but nice with a healthy aftertaste of nuts, coffee, tobacco and caramel.

Carmignano, 1975

Fattoria Artimino

Carmignano (car-meen-YA-noh) is a commune about 13 miles (20 km) west of Florence. The wine region of the same name includes both Carmignano proper and the neighboring commune of Poggio a Caiano. The wines of Carmignano have a history dating back to Roman times and were well known in the Medici court during the Renaissance. In fact, it was reportedly Catherine de’ Medici, who reigned as Queen of France in the mid-1500s, that introduced Cabernet Sauvignon in Carmignano. For centuries, the wines of Carmignano continued to blend a portion of Cabernet with Sangiovese, in stark contrast to the rest of the Chianti zone.
