Barolo, 1966
Giacomo Damilano
Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Leoville Poyferre, 1966
St Julien 2me Growth Classification (MAGNUM Format 150cl)
Now fully mature, this medium-bodied, stylish wine has good black currant fruit, a complex, yet restrained bouquet of cedar and spices, and a good crisp, clean finish.
The vineyards at Leoville Poyferre originally formed part of the great Leoville estate. Following the death of Marquis de la Cases, the vast property was split into three; the Marquis’ son Jean-Pierre took the third that is now Leoville Las Cases, the Marquis’ daughter, Jeanne’s share became what we know as Leoville Poyferre following her marriage to the Baron de Poyferre and the final third was auctioned off and purchased by Hugh Barton. …

Chateau Margaux, 1966
Margaux Premiere Grand Cru Classe (Top shoulder, good label)
*** 91 points - Wine Journal ***
Review:
"this is a classic mature Claret that is delectable to drink now…and not too much later. There is a palpable coolness, almost aloofness on the nose that one often finds on this vintage, the overriding sense that this was a good vintage but not a hot one. It offers graphite, sous-bois and tobacco, the fruit having long ebbed away, yet it is still fresh and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied and a little austere. Yet there is a sense of natural balance with fresh acidity and beguiling tertiary and cedar notes towards the finish. Wonderful. …

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1966
Pauillac 1st Growth Classification
Very top shoulder. Label bin soiled.
Robert Parker writes '... the dark garnet colour and classic sweet, spicy, tobacco, coffee, and black currant aromas are enticing. The wine still has powerful tannin in the finish, which contributes to the dry, austere character this example has always exhibited. One of the more intellectually-styled Moutons, the 1966 is a classic example of the vintage, as well as of the chateau's Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated style. Tasted 10/97 Bordeaux, 3rd Edition. Rating 90/100 (outstanding)

Chateau Yquem, 1966
Sauternes 1er Grand cru Classe
A good wine. On the nose, there is some orange marmalade, honey and spice character in this wine. Turns quite woody, with lots of caramel.
YQUEM HARVEST NOTES: Weather was mediocre in summer, but improved in autumn. The harvest was very long: 48 days' work out of 55 to bring in a very worthwhile and slightly above average crop in terms of volume. A very rich vintage.

Delaforce Vintage Port, 1966
Vintage Port
The 1966 Delaforce vintage port is... "Absolutely charming, vibrant cherry fruit and cedar, flowery cognac high notes, spicy, woody depth; lightly sweet, not very complex but remarkably fresh, deliciously fragrant, slender 1966-style, firm but not edgy acidity, lovely resolved tannin, good length. A very good 1966." Celler Tracker, review - posted 2011

Dom Perignon, 1966
Champagne - Brut
"Definitely fully mature champagne. Amber colour with a rather low key nose initially which opened out to something attractive and lightly sherrified nose that really speaks to the jamon iberico we're served at this dinner at Taillevent organised by François Audouze, his 170th wine dinner. Very deep and rich yet dry. Real lift to this wine but it also has a deep, throat- warming finish. There's a note of cheddar on the nose. Very clean and revitalising. Rich and dense." Jancis Robinson

Vintage Port

"This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977. The 1966 is a top success for that vintage; in fact, it would be hard to find a better port from that year." Robert Parker, Wine Buyer Guide.

Fonseca Port, 1966
Vintage Port - plain label
The Fonseca 1966 vintage port has a russet rim around an intense brick-red centre. The nose is elegant and restrained, with very fine dark berry fruit at the core, still linear and undeveloped. The fruit is enveloped in a subtle aura of floral scent and notes of aromatic wood. Dense and firm on the palate, still delivering a fresh and youthful fruitiness and vinosity alongside warm flavours of liquorice and black coffee. Still reserved and showing wonderful poise and finesse, the Fonseca 1966 is without any doubt one of the finest Ports of this exceptional year.
Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. …
