Chateau Climens, 1976

Barsac, 1st Growth
Sweet White Wine
bin Soiled and damaged labels - good levels.

The 1976 Climens has a lovely nose of mandarin, orange-blossom and a touch of peach. A little “smudged” by alcohol. The palate has a ripe, citrus and mandarin inspired entry, vibrant palate with good depth, touches of quince and barley sugar towards the finish. Good length. Neil Martin Wine Journal 88 Points

Chateau Haut Brion, 1976

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe (in neck, scuffed label)

The 1976 Haut-Brion is medium ruby in color, with some amber creeping in at the edges. The wine has been fully mature since the early eighties, yet it is still drinking well. A spicy, earthy, oaky, moderately fruity bouquet offers elegance. On the palate, the wine is soft, round, medium bodied, and charming. Robert Parker.

Tasted at the Academie du Vin from ex-château bottles, the 1976 Haut Brion is actually a vintage that I have never tasted before... the bouquet has held up well with cocoa-tinged dark fruit, terracotta and dried blood. It feels a little diffuse, but it still rings of Haut Brion.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1976

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

The 1976 Lynch Bages has stood the test of time. Beautiful mature colour, brick red with mahogany hue. It has blackcurrant, smoky, meaty and savoury nose. Fantastic bodied although it has mellow down, showing blackcurrant and tobacco with a drying finish. Very good and enjoyable.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1976

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (Base of neck)

Mahogany core with deep brick rim. The nose is actually better than I anticipated with some dusty black fruits, cedar a touch of game, but it certainly lacks vigour and cohesion. The palate is a little tawdry, slightly hollow with an cooked character that jars against some obvious green berries that found themselves fermenting. Linear towards the dry finish, moderate length.

Chateau Potensac, 1976

Medoc

This wine really lives up to the nature of the vintage. Tannins still present , but sufficient fruit to balance the wine. Just a bit of bricking, slight sedimentation, colour still dark purple. Floral fruity nose, with a trace of iron. Slight chalky finish, clearly more tannic than it's age suggests. Suggest something meaty to go with the tannins.

Chianti, 1976

Castello di San Donato in Ferano

Chianti, situated in Tuscany in central Italy, is home to probably the best-known and most iconic of all Italian wines.
The area’s most highly regarded wines come from the Chianti Classico zone which is the heartland of the Chianti wine region – its traditional and longest-established vinicultural area. This fame is due not just to the high quality of the wines, but also to the classico zone's iconic Tuscan landscape and wine making traditions. This Chianti is characterised by its red and black cherry character, intermingled with notes of wild herbs, mint and spice, supported by a racy acidity and mellow tannins.

Colli di Trasimeno, 1976

Puccianella

The 1976 Colli di Trasimeno is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, merlot and sangiovese and can be made to any number of variations, but the combination typically draws on the power and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, the sweet, juicy fruit flavors of Merlot and the rustic, sour-cherry tang of Sangiovese. Sangiovese is the defining grape in the blend and gives the wine a distinctively Italian accent. The variety’s black-cherry flavors and forest-floor aromas offer a fresh interpretation of the traditional Cabernet – Merlot blend

Dolcetto, 1976

Serio Battista Borgogno

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.
