1959 Solaria Jonica, 1959

Antonio Ferrari

*** 97 Points *** Wine Advocate

This 1959 Wine from Solaria Jonica wine is an outstanding 60 year-old wine and absolute "must have" for anyone celebrating a 60th Birthday or anniversary. It is highly recommended by our wine buyer and many leading wine critics.

Review
"No, the vintage date of this wine is not an error. Just released, it is a selection of old-vine Primitivo grown south of Taranto and only now hitting the market. No one seems to know whether the fermentation was stopped by fortifying the wine or if it just stopped on its own as a result of the superlative richness of the must, but the fact remains that, with close to 14% of alcohol, it is as sweet as a great Recioto, a wine which it greatly resembles.

Carinena, 1958

Mosen Cleto - Susu Perez

Carinena is just one of several DO titles used for the wines of Aragon, northern Spain. Winemaking in the area dates back to at least Roman times, and records from that era confirm that locals drank Carinena wines mixed with honey. Many other historical records attest to the quality of the wines from Carinena; King Ferdinand I of Aragon listed it as his preferred wine above all others and the French philosopher Voltaire thought it heavenly. Wine has long been the economic mainstay of the region and a source of great pride and renown.

Ferreira, 1958

Vintage Port

A rare bottle of 1958 Ferreira Vintage Port. Tasting notes on this port are difficult to find but our friends at vintageport.se have tasted this on four occasions. The most recent tasting (2020) describes this port as "mature and at its peak" with a complex bouquet of mint, toffee and butterscotch. On the palate it is "quite full bodied. Toffee in flavour. Delicious and balanced with a long lovely and attractive finish. Will not be better but is indeed wonderful with a never ending finish."

The name "Ferreira" stands out in the history of the Douro. Founded in 1751 by Manuel Ferreira, the brand's evolution is intertwined with the development of the Douro Region itself.

Madeira, 1958

MMV - Boal - Bottled by Barbeito *

This is a rare and limited release of the 1958 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1958 Boal is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.
