1959 Anjou Moulin, 1959

J. Touchais

A beautiful sweet white wine from a producer renowned for producing wines lasting over a century. This wine is still maturing and is nearly at its peak. The wines of Moulin Touchais begin reaching their peak after twenty years, and many of the great vintages will take much longer. Vintages such as the 1953, 1959, 1964, 1969 are still maturing. The 1945, 1947 and 1949 have become classics.

Tasting Notes: Brilliant golden colour with pale gold hue. The nose is again restrained – a characteristic that appears with most of these wines. Aroma of honey, lemon and toffee apple. The palate is remarkably youthful; luscious with flavours of lemon, spice and honeycombe flavours followed by sugared pear.

Vintage Armagnac (special order)

Baron de Lustrac is a small traditional éleveur specialising in fine old Armagnac vintages. Their extensive range is sourced from neighbouring estates in the Tenereze and Mas Armagnac regions and they keep an ageing and bottling chais near Magnan, in the Bas Armagnac region.


All Armagnacs are aged in 420ltr oak barrels and sold as single vintages. The grapes used are all harvested from the one particular year, and will only be distilled if the conditions were particularly good. Perfect for big birthdays or as a special drink for the connoisseur as they truly are a fine example of the very best Armagnacs around.

Blandy’s Vintage Bual 1957 as a crystalline bright colour with golden highlights, Mahogany colour with a greenish hue. Exuberant and intense aroma. Balsamic notes, spices and nuts. We can also find highlight aromas of candied fruit, vanilla and walnut shell. The palate is concentrated, medium sweet, very round, with a long aftertaste leaving notes of spices, dried fruits and exotic woods.

Blandy’s Colheita Bual 2003 was aged for 12 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, wherebythe wine is gently heated by warm air in the lofts of the company’s south-facing lodge in Funchal.

The only vintage Taylor’s declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, ‘one of the most underrated vintages of the century’. Taylor’s own two great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. Both are categorised grade A - the highest possible rating. In years when Taylor’s produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port. In 1955 there was a heatwave at the end of April and early May.

This Oloroso sherry wine, was bottled in 1954. An intense sherry that is matured in an oxygen present environment. The resulting wines are fragrant and the best examples will display dried fruits, leather, polished wood and exotic spices. Oloroso shows nutty aromas (especially walnuts), combined with polished / balsamic notes, subtle dried fruits, toasted hints, tobacco and autumn aromas. There are noticeable spicy notes in older examples. Often also meaty hints, truffle and leather.

Food & wine Pairing:
The classic pairing for an Oloroso would be red meat and game, but it will also be lovely with well-aged cheese.

Port Forum review
With 2 to 3 hours in the decanter, the heat and sherry aromas blow off. The colour transformed from lightish tawny to tawny with a clear red hue. Wonderful light and fresh nose, giving some citrus, star aniseed and still some light silty aromas. Very delicate on the palate, again with some fresh and semi-dried citrus, almonds, and a wonderful core of light red fruit (rose hip and fresh strawberries). Some exotic spices and milk chocolate on the otherwise dry (and slightly short) finish. Delicate, frail and very special. A well deserved 93 points at this stage.
