Ramos Pinto, 2011

Vintage Port (MAGNUM) in original wooden case.

This 2011 Vintage Port Wine from Ramos Pinto is deep purple in colour, typical of a young classic Vintage. Elegant and fragrant aroma, a denoted fresh and fruity nose of raspberry and ripened plum, with a touch of resin and mint. In the mouth, it is soft yet full-bodied, a solid structure of polished tannins supports the ripe red fruit, a touch of mineral and freshness, notes of mint and dark chocolate. Power and very tasty end. A classic Vintage.

Vintage Port

This 2011 Vintage Port Wine is "from c. 30 year old block planted vines at Quinta do Vau and Quinta do Seixo (Cima Corgo) this blend comprises 40% Touriga Franca (according to Sottomayer, “the strongest, most structured variety”), 40% Touriga Nacional (“elegance and harmony”), 10% Tinta Roriz, 5% Tinta Cão (“for good acidity”) and 5% Sousão (“to increase colour”). It is a marvellously mineral Port with deep, dark reserves of inky fruit well supported by a charge of sootily fine, schistous tannins. A tightly focused laser beam of blackcurrant and glossier cassis fruit is laced with notes of liquorice and cedar and, as it opens up in the glass, tremendous lift of eucalypt and violets.

Taylor's Port, 2011

Vintage Port Single Bottle

The 2011 Taylor's Vintage Port Wine is made only in exceptional years, following the rigorous selection and tasting process to meet the requirements for declaration. Historically Taylor's has only declared a maximum of 3 vintages per decade. 2011 has been hailed as a classic vintage by all accounts. Ideal ripening conditions in this year have led Fladgate wine-maker David Guimaraens to conclude that the 2011s 'stand out for the purity of the fruit and the quality of the tannins, which are silky and well integrated but provide plenty of structure. The 2011 vintage is textbook Taylors in its structured aromatics and elegance (according to Fladgate Managing Director Adrian Bridge).

2010 Chateau Du Tertre

Margaux

This 2010 Chateau Du Tertre is showing better from bottle than from barrel (which makes sense, given that I seemed to be in a minority when judging it from barrel), the 2010 du Tertre has a nice dark plum/garnet colour, a slightly more evolved style than most Margaux, hints of cedar, licorice, black olive and black currant fruit with some flowers and subtle smoky wood in the background. Medium to full-bodied, round, generous and ripe, the words “sexy” and “opulent” come to mind when smelling and tasting this beautiful Margaux.

Barbeito Madeira, 2010

Verdelho - 10 year Old Madeira (presented in a leather effect gift Box)

A 2009 Vintage Madeira Wine. 'Sercial and Barbeito seem like a marriage made in heaven and indeed Barbeito 10 Year Old Sercial Madeira tastes heavenly. My tasting note: 'Peachy pale tawny. Racy with that wonderful purity and acidity, yet heady and with massive depth of fruit. Tense, serious, complex. A marvel really. Only just off dry, this would make a fabulous aperitif.'

Barolo, 2010

Scarzello - Comune di Barolo

The 2010 Barolo red wine challenged Piemonte's winemakers, but this is a classic vintage, reminiscent of the '80s and '90s, a time of consistently cooler, wetter, more stressed vintages. Scarzello’s ’10 Barolo is bewitching--the wine layers its crisp red and blue fruits with worn saddle leather, underbrush, rose petals, and a dusting of minerals and herbs. Chewy tannins cling to the cheeks, while a driving acidity powers the wine to a lingering, silky finish that’s accented by spices and herbs. Deriving from two separate vineyards, the monopole Vigna Merenda in Sarmassa and a plot in Terlo, the grapes for this wine ferment for about thirty days, and the wine ages in oak barrels for two years, followed by one year in bottle before release.

***95 Points- Gold Medal- Decanter Wine Awards***
Markedly rich and rolling style, with soft fruit cake aromas, dried spices and peanut brittle. Crushed almonds coat the smooth red and black fruits on the palate, which finishes textural and warm.

The 10 year old Barros port is a true Portuguese tawny port with a fine, delicate nuttiness. The extended barrel maturation has produced a wine with complex flavours that show subtle 'fruitcake richness'. The wine is full, fruity and stylish. A full bodied and rich port with great structure. Ideal as an aperitif or with puddings and strong cheese.

Blandys Madeira

10 year Old Bual Madeira 50cl.

Blandys 10 Year Old Bual was aged for 10 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional Canteiro system, whereby the casks of this wine are gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. During this totally natural ageing, the wine underwent regular racking before finally being bottled.

Colour and Appearance: clear, amber colour with tinges of gold on the rim. Nose: superbly complex. Great intensity, revealing a bouquet of dried fruits such as figs and prunes, with notes of almonds and oak and subtle hints of toffee and vanilla spice.

Burmester Port, 2010

Quinta de Arnozelo Vintage Port

A 2010 Vintage Port Wine from Burmester.

Tasting Notes
Red and black fruit in the aroma, with much youth, blackberry compote. Very attractive in the mouth, elegant and with a beautiful presence, it proves very lively and fresh with citrus notes to mark presence. Will mature over the next 10-15 years.

Food Pairing
The association of Vintage Port with a mature blue cheese such as Stilton is one of the great classic food and wine combinations. The soft buttery texture, mellow character and piquancy of the cheese are perfectly matched by the powerfully majestic flavours of the Vintage Port.

Chateau d'Issan, 2010

Margaux 3me Cru

The 2010 Chateau d'Issan is an complete, medium to full-bodied red wine; exquisite Margaux from this medieval, moat-encircled, compellingly beautiful estate in the southern Medoc, D’Issan’s 2010 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The deep, gravelly soils mixed with clay have provided extraordinary aromatics. The yields were ridiculously low (22 hectoliters per hectare) and the wine tips the scaled at 13.7% natural alcohol. Production was small after the selection for the grand vin, and the result is a dense, purple-colored wine with beautiful aromatics of spring flowers, blueberries and black raspberries as well as hints of cassis, tar and charcoal.

Chateau Haut Laborde, 2010

Lalande de Pomerol

This 2010 red wine has an intense nose with blackberries, lots of chocolate, vanilla and some liquorice. Medium body on the palate, concentrated fruit, bell pepper and lots of oak, raw grainy tannins which result in a firm structure, less convincing flat mid-palate. A 2010 Chateau La Lagune Haut Medoc red wine.

The Wine Advocate - "Another great success from proprietress Caroline Frey, the 2010 La Lagune provides an essential drinking experience, with notes of Asian plum sauce, mulberries, kirsch liqueur and black currants. The wine also exhibits a savory, rich smokiness and subtle lead pencil shaving notes. Full-bodied and pure, combining both elegance and power, this is a brilliant, very approachable effort that should hit its stride in 5-7."
