Tasting Notes: The 1982 Port from Palmer Dark colour fading to red towards the edges of the glass. Hints of smoked wood and dark fruit. Good tearing on the glass. Refreshing on the tip of the tongue. 1982 was characterised by above average temperatures and an ample water supply, resulting in a long maturation. Containing about 70% Barroca, this vintage was made almost exclusively of grapes from Quinta da Ervamoira.

The wine has discreet and generous aromas of violet, plum, chocolate and ripe fruit, with notes of wood and vanilla. Velvety in the mouth, with a smooth intensity. The wine is well balanced with a light dried prune flavour supported by ripe tannins. The wine will only improve with time.

LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it, thereby producing a wine with the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood. Vintage Port

Purple fading to red and finally pink at the rim. Rich blackberries on the nose along with very faint stewed strawberries. The tannins were powerful on Christmas day but mellowed some by the next evening. The blackberries carried through as a prominent flavor, but added a sourish note almost like a sour cherry. The finish starts out with a rich butter cookie note, but then quickly switches to grape stem.

The 1978 Kopke Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with 119 grams per litre of residual sugar and a bar top cork (typical for the house). It is very graceful for its age, finishing with a wave of sweetness, fruit and sugar. Emphasizing the caramel more than the molasses, this is irresistibly delicious, but it becomes more complex and puts on weight as it airs and warms. The wine shows off its power and hints of Brandy on the rather tense finish, too. Overall, this is a beauty that becomes more impressive the longer you sit with it. …
