Excellent Provenance - Library Release

An excellent vintage year gave us the Messias 1983 bottle. Very impressive for the age of this wine. Powerful yet elegant, with a fine balance and fluidity. Although it is accessible now, this top effort will benefit from another five to ten years bottle age.

Tasting Notes:
Mature tawny colour. Crème caramel and burned sugar in the nose with hints of currants and dried cherries. Full-bodied and rich, with flavours of milk chocolate, toffee and caramel. Quinta do Agua Alta

Despite its thoroughly traditional-sounding name Churchill is the newest of the British-owned Port companies, founded in 1981 by J. Graham.

Quinta Agua Alta is named after the spring at the top of the vineyard and it produces wonderfully pure and fresh water that bubbles up through the granite rock below the thin top soil. Olives and figs grow in abundance around the vineyard which produces a quite stunninly powerful port.

Deep purple in colour with a mass of soft and concentrated fruit. There's plenty of tannin to give structure and a pleasing earthiness on the finish. This is the perfect way to round off a good dinner. …

Vintage Port

Graham's 1983 Vintage Port is a real star performer for the excellent 1983 vintage. The Port is full-bodied, has rich floral and violet aromas, masses of strawberry flavours, very good balance. Long. Tasting Notes: The 1982 Port from Palmer Dark colour fading to red towards the edges of the glass. Hints of smoked wood and dark fruit. Good tearing on the glass. Refreshing on the tip of the tongue. 1982 was characterised by above average temperatures and an ample water supply, resulting in a long maturation. Containing about 70% Barroca, this vintage was made almost exclusively of grapes from Quinta da Ervamoira.

The wine has discreet and generous aromas of violet, plum, chocolate and ripe fruit, with notes of wood and vanilla. Velvety in the mouth, with a smooth intensity. The wine is well balanced with a light dried prune flavour supported by ripe tannins. The wine will only improve with time.

Late Bottled Vintage Port

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it, thereby producing a wine with the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood. The 1980 Dows Vintage Port has a very dark red/black centre, dark red to brown rim. On the nose there are creamy, blackberries and black cherries, slightly herbal notes (good), smoke and wet stone, sweet. The Dow 1980 has a very complex palate, maturity, red currants and black cherries, herbs and smoked meats, in the middle acidity and tannin (still!), great length - 60 seconds plus of blackberries and plums. This is an extraordinary Dow.

Vintage Port

Purple fading to red and finally pink at the rim. Rich blackberries on the nose along with very faint stewed strawberries. The tannins were powerful on Christmas day but mellowed some by the next evening. The blackberries carried through as a prominent flavor, but added a sourish note almost like a sour cherry. The finish starts out with a rich butter cookie note, but then quickly switches to grape stem.

Quinta da Cavadinha

The 1979 Vintage Port from Warre's is seriously attractive. After 4 hours of decanting, it had opened up nicely with lots of fig-like fruits. The palate is rich and infused with age elements with a soft and rich fruit still well to the fore. The fruit is enjoying a late middle to early old age period. No need to drink up yet but age elements will begin to dominate from here on in. If you want fruit then drink now.
