Barolo, 1979

Cav. Luigi Cauda

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau Leoville Lascases, 1979

St Julien, 2nd Growth Classification

Las Cases is the most legendary wine of Saint-Julien: on a quality par with the Médoc's first growths, without the hefty price premium to match. It is a prime example of a Bordeaux 'super-second' - a second growth operating at a first growth level. Léoville Las Cases is also one of the largest, oldest and most picturesque of the Médoc's classified Bordeaux growths. Grapes are fermented at lower than average temperatures, which is partially responsible for the wines displaying some of the most exotic aromas and aromatic richness in the Médoc.

This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. Chateau d'Issan, 1978

Margaux 3me Cru Classe

From the good 1978 vintage, this wine still has a quite dark colour with a moderate amount of age showing
around the rim. The bouquet is a little earthy at first but reveals some complexity. The taste is much better than the bouquet reavealing some typical cassis fruit and medium length finish.

Chateau Figeac, 1978

*** 90/100- Neal Martin ***

Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property, the 1978 Figeac is clearly better than the 1979 and puts in a very commendable performance here. It is similar in color to the 1979, but the nose is fresher and more vital: Provençal herbs, a tinge of dried blood plus vestiges of red berry fruit. Yes, it is a little leafy, but it is exactly what you would expect from the 1978. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine acidity, plenty of blood orange and brown spices, cohesive with more weight and harmony than the succeeding vintage. "Old school" for sure, but at 37 years of age, this is a match for the Cheval Blanc 1978 that I tasted two months before this.

Chateau Leoville Poyferre, 1978

St Julien 2me Growth Classification

A deep tawny rim with a mahogany core. This has a delightful nose, very good intensity with notes of cooked meats, roasted chestnut, toffee and a touch of marzipan. It smells as if it is from a hot vintage! After five minutes in the glass, it become a little muffled but develops a touch of mint. The palate certainly has more fruit concentration than the 1980, a rounded texture, quite sharp acidity with notes of sour cherry, a touch of leather and a dry, rather gamey, but attenuated finish. Not bad for a 1978

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1978

Pauillac, 1st Growth Classification

A deep garnet core with tawny rim. The bouquet displays good intensity, cohesive, earthy, leathery but well defined and gaining potency. The palate is medium-bodied with some attractive decayed black cedar-infused leafy fruit with tobacco and a touch of graphite. Good persistency towards the slightly bitter finish with touches of soy and pain grille. Neil Martin, Wine Journal, Tasted September 2008.

Chateau Musar, 1978

Bekaar Valley, Gaston Hochar

The 1978 Musar is a blend of Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Carignan from this well-known and highly regarded Lebanese winery.

"A delicate nose showed perfume and black currants. It was certainly in tune with very nice fruit and good acidity. A beautiful, mature Claret that fell short of classic. Harmonious " Cellar Tracker Review Average 91 Points,

Chateau Musar is often referred to as the Lafite of the Lebanon. Wine maker Gaston Hochar defied the odds producing a string of great wines during the Lebanon War. Musar has assumed legendary status. Complex, long-lived and endlessly varied, in some vintages it seems more like a Burgundy, in others a Bordeaux, in still others a Hermitage.

Kopke Port, 1978

Colheita Port (presented in a Kopke box)

***94 Points- Mark Squires, eRobertParker.com 23 March 2016***

Review:
The 1978 Kopke Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2015 with 119 grams per litre of residual sugar and a bar top cork (typical for the house). It is very graceful for its age, finishing with a wave of sweetness, fruit and sugar. Emphasizing the caramel more than the molasses, this is irresistibly delicious, but it becomes more complex and puts on weight as it airs and warms. The wine shows off its power and hints of Brandy on the rather tense finish, too. Overall, this is a beauty that becomes more impressive the longer you sit with it.
