Graham's Port

graham-vintage-portGraham’s, one of the most outstanding producers of vintage port, owns five separate mountainous vineyards, located in different parts of the Douro region – each with the maximum ‘A’ grade classification. They have left as much of the original wild plant life undisturbed as possible, preserving biodiversity to contribute to unique and powerfully expressive wines reflective of the terroir. Graham's wines are renowned for remarkable richness, concentration and firm tannic structure which combine to give brilliant longevity. The House style is known by its intense floral notes, opulent berry fruit flavours and flair.

The story of Graham’s is that of two families, across three centuries. Founded in 1820 by two brothers, William and John Graham, the company was one of the first to invest in its own vineyards in the Douro Valley, and remains a pioneer innovating new techniques in winemaking to this day. Today, since their acquisition by Symington Family Estates, five Symington cousins share responsibility for the company. The Symington family has also been involved with Port for generations. Nearly a century after their ancestor AJ Symington left the employ of Graham’s to strike out on his own, the family came full circle to return to the company.

Graham’s only produce Vintage ports in the very best years, creating superb long-lived quality, but on undeclared years produce their famous Single Quinta ports from the Quinta dos Malvedos.

Bright acidity and peppery tannins provide freshness and a balanced structure.

The Year
Abundant rainfall during the first half of the winter reversed the severe drought of 2022, replenishing soil water levels satisfactorily. Although February to April was an exceptionally dry and mild period, generous late spring rainfall in May and June sustained the vines over the ripening cycle.

Vintage Port
Graham's Stone Terraces 2021
*** 19/20 - Richard Mayson ***

VWP had the honour of tasting this on the steps of THE Graham's Stone Terraces on launch day. It is a stunning port of immense concentration yet with finesse and elegance.

Graham's The Stone Terraces Vintage Port is produced from two low-yielding vineyards of just under 3 hectares laid out on magnificent stone terraces at Quinta dos Malvedos. The Symington family only produce this Vintage Port when these vineyards deliver wines of incomparable elegance and complexity. Given that the stone terraces are comprised of just a limited number of vines, the quality does not always align with the pattern of classic Vintage Port declarations - as was their assessment for 2021 and they are not producing any classic Vintage Ports from this year.

Graham's Port, 2018

Malvedos Single Quinta Vintage port

The 2018 Graham's Malvedos Single Quinta is Typical Grahams in style with eucalyptus and mint predominant on the nose and black chocolate. Mouth
plenty of grip and concentration with a long generous and velvety finish

About the Vintage
The 2018 growing season was a rollercoaster, consisting of a winter drought, a deluge in spring and heatwaves through the final ripening period. There was almost three times the average amount of rainfall in March at Quinta dos Malvedos, which meant that the growing cycle started later. As a result, the berries were more vulnerable to the heatwaves during the final ripening period, when temperatures reached 43ºC at the estate.

Graham's Port, 2015

Vintage Port, Douro
THE STONE TERRACES
Presented in Grahams Gift Box
***93 Points- James Suckling***

The 2015 Graham's Vintage Port Wine comes from a limited release of 400 cases from The Symington family's Stone Terraces vineyards, which occupy just 2.9 hectares of its iconic Quinta dos Malvedos, of which the total area under vine is 90 hectares. Acquired in 1890, this property is acknowledged to be in one of the Upper Douro Valley’s most favourable sites. It has been the source of some of the greatest Vintage Ports ever made. The Stone Terraces vineyard at Quinta dos Malvedos produced an extraordinary wine in 2015. The grapes were picked by hand over the weekend of the 12th/13th of September, a couple of days before substantial rain fell across the Douro Valley, and were subsequently fermented in lagares at the estate’s own small winery.

Graham's Port, 2011

Graham's Stone Terraces, Vintage Port, Douro
In Presentation Case

A rare bottle of Graham's Stone Terraces Vintage Port.

At Graham’s Quinta dos Malvedos two parcels have produced consistently extraordinary wines which for years have been at the heart of Graham’s declared Vintage Ports.

Both Parcel #43, known as Port Arthur, and #37, Vinha dos Cardenhos, are planted on old stone-walled terraces, Port Arthur facing primarily east and Vinha dos Cardenhos facing north. The combination of their aspects and their being on stone walled terraces which hold and reflect the heat of the sun, makes the wines from these two parcels very different in character from the rest of the primarily south-facing soil-terraced quinta.

Graham's Port, 1997

Single Harvest Tawny Port

Graham 1997 Single Harvest Tawny Port: This wine represents the beginning of a journey, from apprentice to cellar master. It celebrates deep knowledge of the vineyard and the mastery of tasting, essential requirements for crafting the exceptional wood-aged Ports of Graham’s.

At the harvest of 1997, Graham’s current Director of Winemaking, Charles Symington, was an apprentice to his father, Peter. Although extraordinary wines were produced that year, bottled as Vintage Port, Peter selected some of the best for extended wood aging. More than 25 years later, Charles selected the remaining casks for a limited edition.

Graham's Port

30 Year Old Tawny Port - Small Bottle - 20cl

The Graham's 30 Year Old Tawny Port is a masterpiece of aged Port craftsmanship. Unlike Vintage Ports, which spend only a short time in oak barrels before bottling, Tawny Ports like Graham's 30 Year Old are aged for three decades or more in seasoned oak casks. This extended aging allows the wine to develop a mellow and harmonious character, with flavors integrating and evolving over time.

Tasting notes
The Graham's 30 Year Old Tawny Port is a mesmerizing amber wine with gold glimmers, hinting at its decades-long oak casks. Its aromas are delicate, with layers of un-drenched raisins, succulent figs, and caramelized dates taking center stage.

"...a definite Bordeaux-like nose! Well defined, foursquare at first, opening up nicely with maraschino cherries, cloves, burnt wood/embers and bergamot, gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is very harmonious and elegant. Fleshy, harmonious, seductive on the palate with allspice, nutmeg and ginger sprinkled over the viscous finish and finally, freshly rolled tobacco on the aftertaste. Vintage Port, DOC Douro
In neck, badly chipped capsule, unlabelled

Declared by some shippers, despite the war, and in some cases declared and bottled in 1945 to celebrate Victory. First Vintage to be bottled exclusively in Portugal, rather than shipped in cask as was customary.

Little known, and production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but well-cellared wines are still a pleasure.

In 1890, they became one of the first Port quintas (estates) to source fruit from the upper Douro Valley and established the property Quinta dos Malvedos. The quality of the grapes from this vineyard is a major contribution to the finesse of their Ports. Graham's Port, 1882

Ne Oublie, DOC Douro

The Symington family has released 656 bottles of a Port that dates back to the arrival of their great-grandfather Andrew James Symington in Portugal in 1882.

The family have named this wine ‘Ne Oublie’ after the original Graham’s family motto and for the company where Andrew Symington started his life’s work. The name reflects the respect with which the family regard their great-grandparents’ joint decision to commit themselves and their descendants to Portugal, to the Douro and to Port.

Now 130 years later his direct descendants have bottled one of the remaining three barrels. The other two barrels have been entrusted to the next generation of the family and it is they who will decide their future, in 2025 at the earliest.
