2000 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port:

2000-wine-gifts
The 2000 Vintage was the first to be declared in the 21st century and will be remembered for the immense concentration of its wines and for the small quantities produced. The wines show tremendous promise, with intense berry fruit aromas and full-bodied structure. They should remain at their peak between now and 2040 at the very least, if kept well.

Italian: 2000 was one of the finest post-war vintages for Piedmont wines. The wines are still tannic and youthful, and will last for many years to come.

Bordeaux: The fabled millennium vintage produced wines that are of true greatness and longevity. They are characterised as being powerful and concentrated, with high tannins. The quality is due to ideal weather from the end of September; this allowed the grapes to develop thick skins from lack of moisture. For the first time in many years there was little rain in the harvest season allowing the skins to thicken further. This served to further concentrate the wines. These have evolved slowly and will continue to do so for decades to come, making them an excellent idea for a 21 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary whether to drink now or keep for future drinking.

Barolo, 2000

New

Francesco Sobrero & Figli - Pernanno Riserva

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Chateau de Fieuzal, 2000

Pessac-Leogan Cru Classe

89 Points Robeert Parker

Review: "This may turn out to be an outstanding effort. Deep and concentrated for a 2001, it offers a classic Pessac-Leognan bouquet of smoky, scorched earth, black currants, melted licorice, and a hint of burning embers. Although still monolithic, this medium-bodied claret possesses good texture, purity, ripeness, and overall balance." RP Wine Advocate 2004

Château de Fieuzal is a significant Graves property that has a reputation for producing both red and white wines of extremely high quality. De Fieuzal was bought by Swedish-born Erik Bocké after the end of the war and he was responsible for building up the Château's reputation which culminated in it being classified as a Graves Cru Classé.

Chateau Labegorce-Zede, 2000

Margaux

*** 90 Points Neil Martin Wine Journal ***

This outstanding 90 point wine from the great 2000 vintage is excellent value.

Reviews:
"..Owner/ winemaker Christian Veyry crafts seductive Saint-Émilion with bags of charm from an outstanding terroir, below the village of St Laurent-des-Combes, which was ignored by many Bordeaux growers until Christian showed its full potential. But Christian’s ability to craft wines of great quality has made Saint-Émilion’s top growers sit up and take notice and, more importantly, our own discerning clientele.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 2000

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
100 points Robert Parker

The 2000 Lafite Rothschild is one of the legendary wines of the great 2000 vintage.

Critical Acclaim
I expected the 2000 Lafite Rothschild to be much too young, but I was blown away by how it performed at this meal. A classic Lafite with notes of lead pencil shavings and black currants as well as a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, it possessed striking intensity as well as aromatics. The wine seemed more evolved than I remember, but it is still an adolescent in terms of maturity. This beautiful, rich, full offering is a stunning achievement.
Score: 100 Robert Parker, Hedonists Gazette, July 2013

Chateau Lynch-Bages

Pauillac, 5ème Cru Classé

***97 Points - Robert Parker***
***95 Points - Jeff Leve***
***93 Points - Jeannie Cho Lee***

Beginning to open magnificently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. One of the all-time great examples of Lynch Bages, the 2000 is just beginning to drink well yet promises to last for another 20-25+ years".

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 2000

Sale

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

97 Points (Parker)

"The 2000 Mouton Rothschild is at its best with about 24-48 hours of decanting. A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot, the wine offers a saturated ruby/purple color in addition to reticent but promising aromas of toast, coffee, licorice, creme de cassis, and roasted nuts. Dense, chewy, and backward, with tremendous purity and density in addition to obvious toasty oak, it is full-bodied, powerful, tannic, and backward. Twenty-four to 48 hours of aeration only hints at its ultimate potential. This blockbuster will be exceptionally long-lived. It is not as expressive as the other first-growth Medocs, but give it time.

Chateau Palmer, 2000

Margaux 3rd Growth Classification

*** 96 points Robert Parker ***

Robert Parker writes of this wine... "This has turned out to be a prodigious Palmer. The saturated purple color offers up sexy, full-bodied, almost masculine notes of roasted meats, blackberries, and creme de cassis intermixed with notions of toast, smoke, and camphor. Only 50% of the production made it into the 2000, a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot. The wine is opulent, rich, and full-bodied, with tannin that has become sweeter with age. Its best showing yet, most importantly, has been from bottle. This is a great Palmer that should rival the best of recent vintages, which have all been stunning, as this estate continues to go from strength to strength.

Dow's Port, 2000

Vintage Port HALF BOTTLES

**94 Points** Robert Parker
"An opaque blue/purple colour (typical of this vintage's top offerings) is followed by a strikingly provocative aromatic display (flowers, licorice, blackberries, and cassis). This firmly-structured, classic, tightly-knit, restrained port exhibits brilliant purity as well as impressive intensity. While not the most dramatic or flamboyant, it is a beautiful, classically structured port that will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030." Robert Parker

Taittinger, 2000

Vintage Champagne Zao Wou-Ki Label

In 1964, the 32nd Venice Biennale was the scene of a great furore. Robert Rauschenberg, a 39-year old American artist, was awarded the Grand Prize.

The contemporary art world knew that he, together with Jasper Johns, was the link which connected the abstract expressionism of Pollock and Kooning to the Pop Art of Warhol and Lichtenstein. His art, like some surrealists, was made from discarded items, the old-fashioned and the worn out. His strength lay in the fact that every piece which he collected and assembled was imbued with life to such a degree that he created space (a collage) or time (an assembly).

The 2000 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée, Domaine du Pégau is deep in hue, vivid crimson-red to the rim, the aromas here are at once individual, offering savoury notes of roasted meat, a touch of woodsmoke and plenty of dusky fruits. There is a wild accent to the palate, meaty notes meld with provençal herbs, liquorice and fresh, sweetly ripe blackberry and cherry fruit. Slightly peppery, fine, yet sturdy tannins lend density and substance to this tightly packed châteauneuf-du-pape. Dry on the finish, with a cranberry-like twist of acidity.
