1998 Quinta do Noval, 1998

Silval Vintage Port

From the very good 1998 port vintage, the Silval from Quinta do Noval is our best seller. Now 20+ years of age, the port has mellowed to give complexity, poise and elegance. Pure aromatic nose is really fresh with lovely definition and great purity of sweet blackberry and raspberry fruit. The palate is fresh and supple with lovely pure summer pudding fruit and some nice spicy structure. Nicely defined. With flavours of spiced, raisiny fruit, damson and black treacle, it's fair to say it has aged well and has picked up a few tricks over the years. Noval Silval 1998 has never been more ready.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1998

New

Château La Nerthe

At over twenty years old, the '98 Chateau La Nerthe Chateauneuf du Pape showed a perfectly mature and refined bouquet of dried strawberries and dusty earth with cedar-cigar box, pine, hints of cooling menthol, and sweet herbs. On the palate, textures of pure silk ushered notes of plum, blueberry and ripe strawberry fruits, with hints of mint leaf and chocolate across the senses, guided by balanced acids and leaving just a hint of residual tannin. The finish was long and wonderfully fresh, even cooling to senses, displaying hints of plum, subtle ripe cherry and lingering florals. I don't see this improving, nor declining any time soon--simple settled in a perfect drinking window.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1998

Chateau de Beaucastel Pierre Perrin

*** 93/100 - Robert Parker ***

"The atypically Grenache-dominated 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape is fully mature and gives up tons of kirsch, garrigue, licorice and a touch of gaminess in its full-bodied, layered and ripe personality. More rounded and sexy than most vintages, it has no hard edges, plenty of mid-palate depth and a great finish. I see no reason to delay gratification, but it will certainly hold for 5-10 years."
Wine Advocate, Jeb Dennuck - 2015

*** 18/20 Jancis Robertson ***
Scented and fresh, still showing some red fruit and a touch of vanilla. Elegant and silky. Lingers with flavours of thyme and a hint of bitter chocolate.

Dow's Port, 1998

Quinta da Senhora de Ribeira Vintage port

Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira is set in the remote, hot and dry Douro Superior and commands a magnificent north bank position, overlooking a broad sweep of the Douro, directly opposite another Symington family-owned vineyard: Quinta do Vesuvio. The quinta was built close to an ancient and strategic river crossing, guarded by two 12th century hilltop castles, either side of the Douro. A small chapel dedicated to the ‘Lady of the River’ (literally: Senhora da Ribeira) has stood here for centuries and gave the quinta its name. Travellers would make a pause to pray for a safe river passage and onward journey.

Fonseca Port, 1998

Guimaraens Vintage Port

In the early 1950s, the rising demand for vintage Ports led Fonseca Guimaraens to create a second vintage Port under the ""Guimaraens"" label in undeclared years.

There is a considerably smaller blend of Guimaraens Vintage produced than of Fonseca Vintage Porto, and these non-classic wines, for their quality and rarity, offer an exceptional value. True to the Fonseca style, Guimaraens Vintage Ports are intensely rich and concentrated, with a voluptuous femininity and sublime, velvety texture. Beautifully structured and perfectly balanced, they show the superb marriage of power and breed for which the house of Fonseca Guimaraens is renowned.

Laphoraig, 1998

12 Year old Single Malt The Whisky Castle Collection no 12.

A 12 year old Laphroaig distilled in 1998, matured in sherry butt #80017 and bottled in 2011 for Whisky Castle Ltd.

Laphroaig distillery is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky distillery. It is named for the area of land at the head of Loch Laphroaig on the south coast of the Isle of Islay. The meaning of the toponym is unknown, but a commonly suggested etymology includes the elements "lag" (Gaelic: hollow), "breid" (Norse: broad) and "vik" (Norse: bay), implying an original Gaelic form something like "Lag Bhròdhaig" (the hollow of Broadbay). The name may be related to a placename on the east coast of Islay, "Pròaig", again suggested as meaning "broad bay".

Veuve Clicquot, 1998

Ponsardin La Grand Dame Brut

The house’s 1998 La Grande Dame reveals notable clarity and precision. This focused, poised wine emerges from the glass with well-articulated flowers, pears, smoke, crisp apples and minerals in a medium-bodied style. The wine appears to have enough freshness and sheer depth to support another decade or so of aging.

La Grand Dame represents a significant step up from the estate’s other wines. In 1998 La Grande Dame is 64% Pinot Noir (Ay, Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay and Bouzy) and 36% Chardonnay (Avize, Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger).

Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin is one of Champagne’s best known brands thanks to the success of its “yellow label” non-vintage wine and the tete de cuvee La Grande Dame.

Cockburn Port, 1997

Vintage Port

Cockburn’s Vintage Ports are made both by foot treading in traditional open lagars, and in modern temperature controlled fermenters. Cockburn’s historically has declared vintages less often than other houses, selecting only those years that fit their more elegant style.

Wine Makers Notes 1997 was an excellent year in the Douro Valley. The harvest was one of the longest in living memory: at the far eastern extremities of the Upper Douro, picking began before the end of August and continued until the second week of October.

Press Quotes "Wine of the Week - A classic. Enjoy now or put away for another decade.

Dom Perignon, 1996

Champagne

** Robert Parker 98 Points **

"The brilliant 1996 Dom Perignon, which has largely disappeared from the marketplace, may be the finest young example of DP I have ever tasted. Notes of crushed rocks, honeysuckle, lemon oil, orange marmalade, and white pear provide a stunning aromatic display as well as palate impression. Great acidity and huge flavor intensity backed up by vibrant acidity make this an exquisite Champagne. It should drink well for 20-25 years, possibly longer." Parker, Wine Advocate 2005

Perrier Jouet, 1996

Belle Epoque Vintage Champagne

Pale yellow with gold hints; notes of caramel, leaves, lightly roasted nuts, apple skin, slight oxidation; on the palate still some effervescence bubbles faded rather quickly, pleasing notes of sour apple, burnt caramel, musty chalk; medium body, good lifted acidity with a slightly rich caramel apple note, long in the mouth. Really nice, excellent condition.

Chateauneuf du Pape, 1995

La Crau Domaine Vieux Telegraphe Brunier

The 1995 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Crau Vieux Telegraphe is a consistently high scorer amongst critics.

95 points Wine Spectator
"Rugged and juicy at the same time, with hickory-smoked game, dried blood orange, briar, black currant, bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavors. This offers the classic profile of Châteauneuf, with complexity and length bred by world-class terroir. (JM) (3/2006)"

93 points Jeb Dunnuck
In complete contrast to the sweet fruited, easy drinking 1999 Clos des Papes was the masculine and slightly austere 1995 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau. This is still young and fresh with a blackberry, leather, licorice, river rock and hot tar scented bouquet and a concentrated, medium bodied palate.

Graham's Port, 1995

Malvedos Single Quinta Vintage Port

Reviews:“Seductively perfumed with blackberry and spice, this is subtle, yet richly concentrated… with just enough age for the tannins to have softened to smooth velvet”.
Anthony Rose , The Independent
20/12/2003

“…this is magnificent stuff with a highly bred sense of its class, showing complex hedgerow berries and gripping tannins that mitigate, beautifully, the sweetness in a way that makes the liquid dangerously seductive…”.
