1972 Chateau Durfort Vivens

Margaux 2nd Growth Classification

Medium garnet in colour with yellowing and bricking towards the rim. This is very much alive. Wet leaves, forest floor, sweet tobacco, raspberry, red cherry, vanilla, and white flowers on the nose. There is a lot of sweetly perfumed classic Margaux aromatics. Secondary and tertiary notes dominate but there is still a lot of fruit left here leading to a nice long finish.

1972 Fonseca Port

Guimaraens Single Quinta Vintage Port

A very rare example from the 1972 vintage. Bottling was inconsistent and tasting reports are mixed. This wine has a tawny coloured rim around the outside. The nose is very gummy and thick with orange peel, slightly medicinal. Very reducted on the palate with thick tar, raisins, orange peel.

Armagnac (Comes in original wooden gift box as illustrated)
Special Offer | Was £225 | Now £179

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in original wooden box.

Chateau La Tour Carnet, 1972

Haut Medoc, 4th Growth Classification

A classified growth that remains somewhat under-the-radar. Château La Tour Carnet, a 4emé Cru Classé property, has a long and illustrious history and its wines enjoyed a considerable upsurge in reputation since the mid-1970's when it was bought by Louis Lipschitz. He replanted much of the vineyards and made many long overdue changes to the vinification process.

La Tour Carnet has 42 hectares of vineyards in St-Laurent in the Haut-Médoc. The wine is typically a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. La Tour Carnet produces dry, medium-bodied, classically made clarets that show at their best with 5 years of bottle ageing.

Chateau Montrose, 1972

St Estephe Second Grand Cru class (BBR selected)

The 1972 Chateau Montrose displays light ruby/purple/brown in color. The nose was actually very nice. Cedar, leather, tobacco and cassis. Still some firm tannins. More black cherry on the palate. Slightly sour on the finish. Pretty impressive survivor from this difficult vintage. Quite a treat.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1972

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (top shoulder - labels bin soiled)

Wassily Kandinsky label

Reviews: Stands up well for a 72. This had a deep red-brown color that was consistent throughout. It showed an intense nose of fresh asparagus which carried into the palate where it was joined by notes of celery. This exceeded expectations and was surprising drinkable for the amount of greenness it had. The half-bottle leftover the next day lost a lot of the asparagus/celery notes, having them replaced by some bell pepper and hints of cabernet fruit (cassis). One for the collectors. Sangiovese, 1972

di Nevola, Cantina Sociale di Nevola

Good-quality Sangiovese is prized for its high acid, firm tannins and balanced nature. Savory flavors of dark cherries and black stone fruit are characteristic, and may be backed by secondary notes of tomato leaf and dried herbs. The use of oak has become more popular and this coaxes richer flavors from the grapes, tending toward plum and wild raspberry.

This Marchesi de Barolo from the outstanding 1971 wine vintage is considered to be one of the finest types of wine in the world and is often referred to as 'the King of wines'.

Reviews: "The wine has a clear, pale intensity, garnet-brown colour. The nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of grilled herbs, sweet tea leaves, earth, hints of cherry fruit. With more air, classic roses and tar, which then faded to reveal truffles after an hour plus. On the palate, dry, high acidity, resolved medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, sweet tea leaves, slight red cherries, grilled herbs, and eventually truffles.
