The 1980 vintage was not a great one overall, with few hits across the wine world and even then it never quite went above being strictly average. The biggest disappointments lay in the Old World, particularly in the French regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne, which saw very few great wines produced. Although some good Rhône Valley, Spanish and Port wines were made. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 45 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1980 Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
  • Bodegas Toro Albala 1980 Don PX Seleccion
  • Quinta Das Carvalhas 1980 Colheita Port – with gift tube
  • Barolo 1980 Giordano

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: Tennis player Venus Williams was born.
Eurovision Winner: Ireland with the song "What's Another Year" by Johnny Logan
Top Grossing Movie: Star Wars Ep. V: The Empire Strikes Back

Bordeaux: The 1980 wine vintage produced wines of variable quality from Bordeaux. A very wet, cool year resulted in wines that were light and diluted. Nevertheless, some producers who operated a strict selection policy still managed to produce acceptable wines.

Champagne: In Champagne, the 1980 is an exceptionally fine, rich vintage.

Italian: 1980 for Italian wines was a very good year. The wines are generally quite consistent and there are some great Barolo wines from Piedmont. The wines have reached full maturity but will last for a few more years.

Portugal: The 1980 Port vintage is rated as outstanding and was generally declared vintage. Over time the 1980 Ports have been hugely under-rated book-ended by the great 1977 and large abundant 1983 and 1985 vintages. This vintage is ready now but will continue to develop and keep for decades, making them the perfect wine gift for a birthday or anniversary. An unusually early spring was followed by an extremely dry growing season and sugar readings were on the low side when picking began a week or so later than normal, at the end of September.

    Toro Albalá, 1980

Don PX Seleccion in Gift Box
    Montilla-Moriles
    20cl Bottle

Pedro Ximénez (often abbreviated as PX) is a sweet, fortified wine primarily produced in Spain, especially in the regions of Jerez (Sherry) and Montilla-Moriles. It is made from the Pedro Ximénez grape, which is sun-dried to concentrate its sugars before fermentation. The result is a wine that is intensely sweet, rich, and dark, with a syrupy texture.

Often described as "dessert in a glass," PX wines are bursting with flavors of raisins, molasses, dried figs, caramel, chocolate, and nuts like toasted almonds or hazelnuts. The wine’s sweetness is balanced by its complex and layered profile, making it a luxurious treat for the palate.

    Quinta Cachao Vintage Port

1980 Messias – Quinta do Cachão Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal)

A beautifully mellow, fully mature single-quinta Vintage Port from the classic Messias lodge. The colour sits between deep garnet and tawny at the rim. The nose is evocative and layered: dried fig and date, black cherry liqueur and plum conserve, orange peel, cocoa and coffee bean, with polished old-oak tones, walnut and warm spice; a gentle eucalyptus/menthol lift adds freshness.

Silky and harmonious on the palate. Sweet black fruits fold into caramelised nut, dark chocolate and nougat; the spirit is well-knit, acidity lively, and the once-firm tannins now velvety and resolved.

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. 1980 Bordeaux – Château Larcis Ducasse (Saint-Émilion)

The nose is gentle and tertiary: dried redcurrant and plum, cedar and pencil shavings, tobacco leaf, bay, leather and a touch of sous-bois. Finish is tapering and elegant with cedar, leaf tobacco and a hint of dried rose.

    Chateau Latour, 1980

    Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1980 Château Latour from Pauillac, one of Bordeaux’s First Growth estates, comes from a less celebrated vintage. The 1980 growing season was challenging due to a cooler and wetter summer, resulting in less-than-ideal conditions for ripening. However, Château Latour is known for its ability to produce outstanding wines even in difficult years and the 1980 vintage is one of the top wines from the vintage, although lighter and less structured compared to more renowned vintages.

Tasting notes for the 1980 Château Latour: The wine is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot typical of Latour’s blend.

    Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1980

    Paulliac 1er Cru Grand Classe

The 1980 Château Mouton Rothschild is a fascinating example of how even First Growth estates navigate the challenges of difficult vintages. This particular year was marked by variable weather across Bordeaux, including a wet spring and cool summer, which led to uneven ripening and modest fruit concentration. As a result, wines from the 1980 vintage, including Mouton Rothschild, are generally considered less powerful and less age-worthy than those from more acclaimed years. Yet, despite these hurdles, Mouton’s reputation and meticulous winemaking ensure that even its weaker vintages hold interest.

Similar notes on the palate, round, tart, good structure. Clearer mushroom notes with time to breathe but not much further development. " Cellar Tracker Review Average 91 Points,

    Vintage Port

Purple fading to red and finally pink at the rim. Rich blackberries on the nose along with very faint stewed strawberries. Sweet White Wine

The 1980 Eiswein is a sweet dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing for a more concentrated grape juice to develop.

The high residual sugar concentration give these wines great ageing properties - we tasted this bottle over two days. Served chilled from the fridge after a 4 hour decant. The colour is a light-amber with green tinge around the rim of the glass. Fresher than another bottle from a different region. There are honey notes, apricots and sultana notes on the nose.

The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

    Taylor Fladgate, 1980

    Vintage Port

Taylor Fladgate 1980 Vintage Port is a classic expression from one of the Douro’s most prestigious houses, produced in a year that yielded elegant, long-lived wines. Now with more than four decades of bottle age, the 1980 Taylor has developed into a beautifully mature Vintage Port, showing the finesse, structure and aromatic lift that define the house style. It is widely regarded as one of the standout wines of the vintage.

The nose is richly evolved yet wonderfully fresh, offering lifted aromas of dried blackberry, cherry liqueur, fig and plum. Layers of violets, cedar, cocoa and warm spice emerge with time, alongside subtle notes of eucalyptus—an unmistakable Taylor signature.

The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. Barolo, 1980

    Pio Cesare, Piedmont
    Was £129 Clearance Offer £65

1980 Barolo – Pio Cesare (Piedmont, Italy)

A fully mature, classical Barolo that prizes perfume and savoury finesse over power. Brick-garnet with a broad tawny rim; aromas of dried cherry and cranberry, rose petal and violet, cedar, leather and sweet tobacco, with hints of orange peel, tea leaf and a gentle tar/balsamic lift. Blandys, 1980

    Sercial
    HALF BOTTLE 37.5cl

The 1980 Blandys Sercial Madeira is "Based on Sercial grown on the north west corner of the island at Seixal and Porto Moniz where I am told that this grape produces the most gentle fruit: lovely clean, lifted aromas, green fruit, apple peel with a touch of citrus; lovely fresh appley flavours with a hint of toffee and milk-chocolate, perhaps just a touch of salinity, steely acidity running all the way through, fresh and lithe on the finish, dry but not austerely so with 55g/l of residual sugar. Just 800 bottles in total."

    Terrantez Madeira
    Presented in Wooden Gift Box

    Blandy’s Terrantez 1980

Review bySarah Ahmed "The Wine Detective". "I’m a huge Terrantez fan and this one ticks all the right boxes. Smooth on the nose with a smooze of light caramel and sweet café crème. A lick of tobacco herbality – greener – lends appetising lift. The saliva glands are at work already! And so it is in the mouth – almost creamy on entry, yet penetrating too thanks to its lively, very persistent backbone of acidity. Delicate staccato spices and a lick of toffee apple seduce. That bottled electricity, v.a. accelerant fires up a super long, reverberating finish, its delicious woody, mellow timbre deftly leavened by that light, herbal riff.

    Montepulciano, 1980

    d'Abruzzo, Vecchio Colle
Clearance Offer – Last Bottle Was £69 Now £35

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions.
