White Port is a fortified wine made from white grapes such as Malvasia and Gouveio in Portugal's Douro Valley. Known for its versatility, White Port can be served as an aperitif or in cocktails like the popular Port and Tonic. White Port is available in both dry and sweet styles, with the sweetest version being known as "Lagrima" due to its rich viscosity.
White Port has gained enormous popularity over recent years and is now the fastest growing category of Port. White Port is made from white grapes native to the Douro Valley such as Malvasia, Viosinho, and Gouveio and many more depending on the producer. The fortification process is largely the same as for red Port but there is little or no maceration of the grapes. Generally, White Port is made in two styles, dry and sweet. The sweet version is the traditional style of White Port and tends to be rich and grapey. The sweetest examples are known as "lagrima" (tear) after the viscosity of the wine in the glass. Examples of these may last as long as some of the red vintage ports and make an excellent aperitif. Since 2022, age classifications of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 years old can be used.
How to Serve White Port
White port wine is a versatile and flavorful drink that can be served in various ways depending on the occasion and your preferences. For a simple yet elegant option, serve it chilled as an aperitif. The ideal serving temperature is between 8-12°C and it is best presented in a white wine glass or traditional port glass to concentrate the aromas. To enhance the flavor, you can garnish it with a slice of orange or a twist of lemon peel.
White port also pairs beautifully with food. For appetizers, serve it alongside salty snacks like almonds, olives, or cured meats, or with soft cheeses such as Brie or goat cheese. As a dessert wine, sweet white port works well with fruit-based desserts, nutty cakes, or buttery shortbread. When serving it as a dessert wine, slightly warmer temperatures (12-14°C) can enhance its rich and sweet flavors.
Whether enjoyed on its own, in a cocktail, or paired with food, white port wine offers a range of options to suit any occasion. Experiment with these serving suggestions to find your favorite way to savor this delightful beverage.
