Amarone della Valpolicella, 1967

Campo Fiorin - Masi

This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Different sources and different grape varieties are important to obtain well-balanced wines with the fine structure that only a few single areas in the Valpolicella zone can provide. Notes: Color: strong ruby red. Clear and transparent. Bouquet: notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. Flavor: wine with a velvety, raisiny character combined with the structure and typical stylish bitterness to give it good balance.

Barolo, 1967

Livio Pavese

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Barolo, 1967

Contratto, Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

1967 Barolo – Contratto (Piedmont, Italy)

The 1967 vintage in Piedmont produced classically styled wines, favouring structure, acidity and steady evolution rather than overt concentration. From the historic house of Contratto, founded in 1867 and long associated with traditional Piedmontese winemaking, this Barolo reflects an era when extended ageing in large oak casks and patient bottle maturation defined the region’s character.

Tasting Notes:
Now showing a mature brick-garnet hue with amber highlights at the rim, the nose is gently evolved and expressive. Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal and redcurrant are layered with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor.

Giordano

Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years.

Barbaresco, 1966

G. Troglia - RARE FORMAT of 2,1 Liters

The 1966 Barbaresco from G. Troglia, presented in an exceptionally rare 2.1-liter format, is a remarkable collector’s piece from one of Piedmont’s most historic wine regions. Barbaresco, crafted from the noble Nebbiolo grape, is famed for its elegance, aromatic complexity, and ageing potential—and in a vintage like 1966, considered classic for the area, these qualities are elevated to an extraordinary level. The large-format bottling adds further intrigue, as wines age more slowly and gracefully in bigger bottles, preserving freshness and complexity over decades.

In the glass, this mature Barbaresco shows a brick-garnet core with an orange-brown rim, a hallmark of fully developed Nebbiolo.

Time in substantial bottlings has seen this wine evolve into a profoundly nuanced expression of Nebbiolo’s noble character.

Barolo, 1966

Luigi Calissano - Riserva Speciale

Appearance: pale garnet or amber colour, with a broad, tawny rim.
Nose: intensely aromatic and layered. Expect a bouquet of dried roses, potpourri, and old leather, typical of aged Barolo. Earthy and savoury notes like truffle, underbrush, and wet leaves would likely be prominent, along with hints of tobacco, cigar box, and perhaps a touch of menthol or eucalyptus.
Palate: smooth and harmonious, with tannins that have softened to a velvety texture. The acidity, while still present, would provide a balance that keeps the wine lively despite its age. Flavours of dried cherries, cranberries, and figs would dominate, intertwined with savoury elements like dried herbs, leather, and truffle.

Recioto, 1966

Biscardo, Spumante, Sweet Sparkling Red Wine

"Recioto," as in "Recioto della Valpolicella," refers to a dessert wine made from grapes that were dried on mats after picking. This process turns the grapes closer to raisins, concentrating the flavours. The wines are lovely and taste how you'd expect raisins-turned-wine to taste, rich and sweet.

Stand the bottle upright for 2–3 days prior to opening to allow any sediment to settle. Decant slowly and carefully through a fine strainer, allowing 1–2 hours of gentle aeration before serving at 16–18°C. A fragile cork is very common with older bottles, where the wine has been in prolonged contact with the cork over many decades.

Barolo, 1964

Marchesi Villadoria - Riserva Speciale

Opened, decanted and 5-6 hours before dinner. Garnet colour and quite clear. The wine evolved over time to ripe cherry marinated in alcohol, and some spices, like pepper and clove . Structure was still alive with bright acidity. Still enjoyable and a tribute to this vintage's endurance. We had a good time, for sure.
This wine comes from the Marenca and Rivette estate, besides Margheria, and now for the last 40+ years in the hand of a famous winery producing there extremely premium wines. This explains the longevity, so there is an extra point for age-worthiness of this 60 year old beauty. CellarTracker Review February 2023.

Inferno, 1964

Enologica Valtelinese

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

Born at the start of the century, in 1905, it is one of the most long-established Italian wineries and one of the oldest in the Oltrepò Pavese. To speak of its founder, Angelo Ballabio, today, is to remember a rare man, loved and known as the “local authority” when it came to wine: a kind, simple man of exceptional knowledge thanks to an entire life spent making the best possible wine. He was not one to buy a single bunch of grapes or a single litre of wine. This is testified by the numerous national and international awards received by the Company since long-ago 1911. It is our intention to produce wines that express and exalt the natural distinctiveness of our vineyards.

The “Riserva” designation and “Riforma Fondiaria” name suggest extra care, selection, and ageing; this is a wine made to be savoured with patience.

Appearance & Nose

Sogno di Bacco, 1961

Umberto Fiore - Riserva

Sogno di Bacco is made from thelong lasting nebbiolo grape. Nebbiolo is a black-skinned red wine grape variety most famous for creating the 'tar and roses' scent of Barolo wines from Piedmont, north-western Italy. The grape's very name is evocative of its home among the misty foothills of the western Alps; the nebbia (Italian for 'fog') after which it is named frequently arrives on early October mornings, when the Nebbiolo harvest is in full swing.

This 1959 Wine from Solaria Jonica wine is an outstanding vintage wine and absolute "must have" for anyone celebrating a special Birthday or anniversary from this year. It is highly recommended by our wine buyer and many leading wine critics.

Review
"No, the vintage date of this wine is not an error. Just released, it is a selection of old-vine Primitivo grown south of Taranto and only now hitting the market. No one seems to know whether the fermentation was stopped by fortifying the wine or if it just stopped on its own as a result of the superlative richness of the must, but the fact remains that, with close to 14% of alcohol, it is as sweet as a great Recioto, a wine which it greatly resembles.

The *Vermuth Chinato* from Capetta is a distinctive fusion of two great Italian traditions—vermouth and *vino chinato*. Produced in Piedmont, this style combines a fortified wine base with the classic botanical blend of vermouth, while also incorporating quinine bark (*china*), which imparts the signature bittersweet depth of a Chinato. The result is an aromatised wine that is richer, more complex, and slightly more medicinal in character than standard vermouth, crafted for both aperitivo and digestivo enjoyment.

In the glass, it would display a deep amber-brown hue with warm ruby glints, promising aromatic intensity.

Rabarbaro - Zucca Ettore

The *Rabarbaro* from Zucca Ettore is a classic Italian herbal elixir, celebrated for its distinctive use of Chinese rhubarb (*rabarbaro cinese*) as the core botanical. First created in the late 19th century, this bittersweet liqueur quickly became a fixture of Milanese café culture, particularly as a refined aperitivo or post-meal digestivo. Its profile is earthy, slightly smoky, and aromatic, offering a more savoury alternative to sweeter amari.

In the glass, Zucca *Rabarbaro* shows a deep mahogany-brown colour with garnet highlights, hinting at its herbal richness. The nose is intense yet inviting, with aromas of rhubarb root, dried herbs, and subtle citrus peel, supported by undertones of cocoa, gentian, and a light smokiness.
