Quarles Harris, 1977
Vintage Port
***18/20, Jancis Robinson***
Healthy ruby with a brick rim. Quite subtle already; there is some perceptible evolution of colour and flavour here. Mineral rather than fruit flavours dominate. Very big and full. Very, very sweet indeed - in fact I thought it was from a Portuguese house. This wine delivers a pretty good combination of power, interest and, especially, sweetness. This is not a wine to be ignored! But it's a very particular style....without enormous tannic reserves. Jancis Robinson

Fonseca Port, 1976
Guimaraens Vintage Port

REVIEWS:
1976 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port - The color of this was amazing dark, being solid black with a tawny colored rim around the outside. I can’t ever remember seeing a color like this on this old VP. The nose was very gummy and thick with a floral aspect similar to the elderberry flower. Very reducted on the palate with thick tar, raisins, and green stems. Yet it was still tannic at the same time. The finish was moderate with a rich mint aspect to it. While good in its own right, served blind this could have easily been mistaken for a lighter style PX Sherry. An extremely dry winter was followed by a hot summer causing springs and wells to dry up for the first time in living memory. …

Late Bottled Vintage Port
Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it.
LBV's display the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood.

Lovely tawny colour with a brick hue. The nose shows violets and sweet cherry with hints of wintergreen. On the palate it may not be as sweet as the earlier Ports from the 60s, but that is very much a good thing. Lovely dark caramel colour, with some truffle and tea notes, edges of olive and green fruits (fig). Tasting Notes: A slightly deeper core compared to the ’63. The nose is very ripe with mulberry and tobacco with a hint of balsam, just lacking a little freshness and delineation. The palate is similar to the ’63, very well-balanced and cohesive, a slightly viscous texture, fresh and surfeit with joie-de-vivre and vivacity. Wild strawberry, lemongrass and fig towards the finish, this is certainly the “dark horse” of the decade and in my humble opinion, superior to the ’63. A little gem. Tasted November 2007. The Sandeman 1966 is a superb port from a classic vintage. The medium garnet colour has held up quite well with some bricking on the rim, but otherwise this wine is still showing youth and it has the backbone for a long life ahead. A 1966 vintage from them represents not just a well-aged Port, but a beautiful piece of family heritage and old-school craftsmanship.
The 1966 vintage itself was a declared year and widely considered excellent — not quite as powerful as 1963, but producing wines of superb elegance, structure, and ageing potential. …

One of the great vintages of the century, and one of the best wines ever released by Sandeman. Classic aromas of figs and prunes, powerful, rich and sweet, with tremendous length.
Reviews:
"This may be one of the most underrated '63s made. Its deep red color gives little indication of the wine's age, and there is an abundance of youthful, rich fruit on the nose and palate. Full tannins and an assertive finish back up everything." 96/100 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator

Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.
This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. …

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1960
Vintage Port
Embossed capsule | Unlabelled | Level in Neck
“This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.” Christian Seely
The terroir: a small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines and untouched by phylloxera, described as “attached to the soil of the Nation”. …
