Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

He was not one to buy a single bunch of grapes or a single litre of wine. This is testified by the numerous national and international awards received by the Company since long-ago 1911. Here, the Aglianico grape—the noble red of Southern Italy—is showing what decades in bottle can do when it comes from volcanic soil on the slopes of Monte Vulture. The “Riserva” designation and “Riforma Fondiaria” name suggest extra care, selection, and ageing; this is a wine made to be savoured with patience.

The 1961 crop was a small one, frost in May having wiped out most of the Merlot. The Latour team took pride in having picked – unlike some other properties – before excessive ripeness set in, allowing a perfectly balanced and appetising wine to be produced. The disastrous conditions in May meant that the crop was very small, and from the outset the château reported that the wines were dark, rich, ripe and incredibly concentrated but perfectly balanced. …

Sweet notes of dried fruits, herbs, tobacco, smoke, and roasted meats are followed by an opulently-textured, thick, nearly viscous wine with high glycerin, ripe, jammy fruit, and an intoxicating combination of glycerin, extract, and suppleness. "No, the vintage date of this wine is not an error. Just released, it is a selection of old-vine Primitivo grown south of Taranto and only now hitting the market. No one seems to know whether the fermentation was stopped by fortifying the wine or if it just stopped on its own as a result of the superlative richness of the must, but the fact remains that, with close to 14% of alcohol, it is as sweet as a great Recioto, a wine which it greatly resembles. …

Vintage & Background
The 1958 vintage in the Médoc wasn’t uniformly brilliant, but Palmer has long been one of the châteaux that manages to shine even in more difficult years. Its site in Margaux, with deep gravel soils and a generous proportion of Merlot, often gives its older bottles a elegance, suppleness, and aromatic charm.
Appearance & Nose
In its 60-plus years, Palmer 1958 tends to show a quite mature tint—often a soft garnet centre with amber or tawny rim hues. On the nose you’ll find tertiary aromas such as leather, moss, and forest floor or compost, along with softer dried fruit character. …

With whiffs of smoke and earthiness in addition to plenty of red fruit, plus sweet, grainy tannins and a satisfyingly long finish, this is a wine that is definitely worth seeking out, especially the price is relatively modest compared to many comparably stylish California Pinot Noirs. …
