Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1963

Noval Nacional
Level in Neck- Good Label
***99/100 - Robert Parker***

Noval is particularly famous for its Nacional, a Port produced in some years only from a 2 hectare parcel at the heart of the Noval vineyard where ungrafted pre phylloxera vines survive.

"Last July I enjoyed this "legend" at Noval and consumed my share of an entire bottle that was opened for our small group of Port journalists. This VP had a very dark ruby color and was clearly from a perfectly stored bottle. The 1963 is as lithe and graceful as a trapeze artist, and showed what perfection in balance is all about. It is not easy for Port to get much better than this. Sweet, spicy, grapey, mint, big, bold, brash are all apt descriptors.

Sandeman, 1963

Vintage Port
** 96/100 - Wine Spectator **

The Sandeman 1963 Vintage Port stands as a benchmark for classic Port from one of the most legendary vintages of the 20th century. Produced in the heart of the Douro Valley by one of Portugal’s most iconic houses, this wine has matured gracefully for over six decades, offering a remarkable window into the craftsmanship of traditional vintage Port. The 1963 declaration was unanimous across major producers, and Sandeman’s bottling remains one of the standout examples from that historic year.

Now showing its full maturity, the wine reveals a beautifully evolved character. In the glass, it presents a tawny-brick hue with glimmers of amber at the rim.

Taylor Fladgate, 1963

Vintage Port
Grants of St James Label - excellent provenance
Remain of label.

Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1962

Nacional- Vintage Port
***98 Points- Extraordinary!***- Robert Parker

***98 Points- Extraordinary!***
Robert Parker Jr. Wine Advocate #107/Oct 1996***

Remarkably, the 1962 Nacional exhibited an even more opaque color than the 1970, as well as exquisite richness and concentration. Massive (but not in the Taylor style), this phenomenally concentrated, complex, still youthful vintage port is a tour de force in winemaking, and one of the greatest, can you believe this, young vintage ports I have ever tasted. This wine needs another 5-10 years to reach full maturity as neither the color nor aromatics reveal much development. It could easily have one-hundred years of longevity.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1960

Vintage Port
Embossed capsule | Unlabelled | Level in Neck

“This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.” Christian Seely

The terroir: a small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines and untouched by phylloxera, described as “attached to the soil of the Nation”.

Constantino Port, 1958

Vintage Port

The 1958 Constantino Vintage Port is a rare and charming survivor from a lesser-declared vintage, offering a glimpse into mid-20th-century Portuguese winemaking from one of the Douro’s traditional producers. Constantino, founded in the late 19th century, was known for producing solid, classically styled Ports, and the 1958 is a particularly elegant and mature expression, now over six decades in bottle.

On the nose, the wine opens with delicate, evolved aromas of dried cherry, orange peel, and spiced fig, interwoven with hints of leather, polished wood, and floral potpourri. There’s a fine oxidative character that adds depth, bringing in subtle notes of walnut, old books, and sweet herbs.

The only vintage Taylor’s declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, ‘one of the most underrated vintages of the century’. In years when Taylor’s produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port. In 1955 there was a heatwave at the end of April and early May.

From the very good 1948 vintage, this very rare Taylors vintage port is one of the finest ports ever made

There is Vintage Port and then there is the 1948 Taylor Fladgate. It remains a monumental Port that towers over the 20th century. Nineteen forty-eight is perhaps one of the lesser-known declarations compared to 1945 and 1963, although nine houses declared that year. Michael Broadbent described that as an “error of judgment” given the quality of the vintage in retrospect. I have been fortunate to taste the 1948 Taylors on several occasions, encountering one or two perfect bottles along the way.

Niepoort Port, 1945

Vintage Port

A rare example of the Niepoort 1945 Vintage.

Rated 97 points from the Wine Spectator (in 1990)… 'Another Port shipper once mistook this extraordinary wine for one 15 years younger. It is very youthful, with caressing sweet fruit flavors. Medium garnet with a ruby center, blackberry, black pepper and smoke aromas, medium-bodied, with sweet blackberry.'

Voted as the best of the Niepoort vintages by thePortForum.com - Review: 60% opaque, red. Wonderful mature VP, still with structure. Mint and cherry, though fruit fading. Fabulous. Widely acclaimed, and overwhelmingly voted, wine of the night

VINIFICATION AND AGEING
Hand-picked at the optimum time, the grapes are then destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful skin maceration and constant churning during fermentation aimed at producing white wines full of colour and structure, with enough phenolic compounds to support a long ageing in wood. This fermentation takes place in vats (lagares) until the right degree of sweetness (baumé) is achieved. At this point, grape brandy is added to create the final fortified wine. A wine of high quality, made from one single harvest.

This is the oldest Croft with vestige of fruit lingering on the nose with hints of macerated red cherry, figs, balsam and liquorice. Complex and compelling, with very good lift. The palate is simply outstanding with immense depth and complexity, beautiful sense of natural balance and harmony with spice, Manuka honey and dates. Long, seductive and irresistible, it is difficult to image exactly how port can be much better than this imperious Croft ’35. Brilliant.

São Leonardo by Quinta do Mourao

Very Very Old White Port(90 Years)
97 Points- Wine Advocate

In 1927, Mario Braga, creator of the project “Quinta do Mourão”, was born. So too was born this amazing wine, bottled 90 years after as a tribute to their beloved father. Miguel Braga, the current owner, has handcrafted traditional wines, made and aged in the original estates in the Douro. This gives the wines a distinctive flavour profile. The Douro profile is more intense, dark, thick, sweet and spicy, with more intense aromas. With the release of a small number of aged tawnies, the market for these wines amongst aficionados has developed markedly in the last decade.

Golden colour. Intense and complex aromas of dried fruits associated with an amazing acidity that provides it an incredible explosion of freshness in the palate.

Fonseca Port, 1934

Vintage Port
Fonseca's, Vintage Port 1934 Bottled by Hatch, Mansfield and Co. .
Provenance: Christies Sale Raby Castle

Fonseca’s 1934 stands out as an exceptional wine from a split vintage spanning 1934 and 1935. Bottled by Hatch & Mansfield, this is an extremely rare Port, with even the library stock in the Fonseca lodge being very limited.

Still with a deep red core, the wine offers a reserved and refined character, revealing dark chocolate intensity on the nose and a fuller, more textured palate. It exudes lively elegance and freshness, with a subtle hint of salinity adding complexity. Beautifully defined soft berry fruit is perfectly balanced by fine, linear tannins, while a cherry stone freshness lingers gracefully on the finish.

Luiz Vasconcelos Porto, his son-in-law, was the author of a vast set of innovations, transforming the old narrow terraces into wider terraces, which are a distinctive feature of Noval, with its whitewashed stairs. Sandeman, 1934

Sandeman 1934, DOC Douro
Neck label
Bottled in 1936 by Findlater, Mackie & Co Ltd, Hove

It all started in 1790 when the 25-year-old son of a Scottish prosperous cabinetmaker asked for a 300£ loan from his father to set up as a wine merchant in London.
This ambitious young man was George Sandeman, the founder of Sandeman, who ended up establishing one of the world’s leading Port and Sherry wine businesses.

From early on Sandeman specialised in these two great Iberian fortified wines and, following a usual practice in those days, began trading not from own offices but from Tom’s Coffee house, on Birchin Lane, London. Business was agreed on a ‘gentleman’s word’ and George soon gained an impeccable reputation, characteristic of The House of Sandeman to today.

Rebello Valente Vintage Port, 1931

Vintage Port Bottled by Robertson, DOC Douro

The 1931 Rebello Valente Vintage Port, bottled by Robertson, is an exceptionally rare and historic expression from one of the most remarkable and unusual years in Port history. The 1931 vintage is often described as “the vintage that never was” due to the global economic depression, which meant that very few shippers declared it despite it being considered outstanding in quality. As a result, surviving bottles are scarce, and those from respected houses like Rebello Valente—here bottled by the renowned firm Robertson—are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs.

In the glass, this near-century-old Port shows a deep mahogany-brown core fading to amber and green-gold at the rim, classic markers of a fully mature Vintage Port.

Fonseca Port, 1927

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Very Top shoulder
Slightly bin soiled label

Review by AHB - Portforum.com "A lovely rich red colour, warm and dark; 90% opaque. Showing little on the nose, but the little it is showing is warm and fruity — and very nice. A beautiful palate, soft entry with poise and balance. The fruit is generous, sweet and ripe and still plentiful. The palate is big and rich; stunning for a port of this age. The aftertaste is amazing — so full of fruit, of rich burnt fruitcake; mouthfilling and immense. This is stunning, stunning port.".

48 hours later a 6cl sample bottle was tasted which showed even mor ecomplexity, being sweeter and rounder than the pop 'n' pour version.

Sandeman, 1927

Vintage Port
Mid-high Shoulder.

This also did well in a blind tasting of '27s. It is a wonderful wine, with mature aromas of raspberries and roses, medium-bodied, with lovely, sweet, balanced fruit flavors and a long finish. Score: 92

Taylor Fladgate, 1927

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Bottled by D E Sandeman

Taylor’s 1927 vintage port is one of the most sought-after and expensive of all vintage Ports, and this wine, from an acclaimed vintage, is at the top of the tree. Released at 'just' 20 pence a bottle in 1929 much of the stock remained unsold due to large volumes and economic depression. Now nearly one hundred years later, this is one of the most sublime and most sought after ports.

Critics reviews:
95 Points James Suckling. " This blows the '35 off the table. It is incredibly concentrated yet superbly balanced. It lives up to Taylor's lofty reputation. Medium ruby-garnet, with intense raspberry and blackberry aromas, full-bodied, with rich, velvety, ripe raspberry flavors and a long thick, rich finish.

Taylor Fladgate, 1924

Vintage Port, DOC Douro Unlabelled ID from cork. Excellent provenance Level Very Top Shoulder.

‘Just a notch deeper in colour than the 1912. The nose is divine: intense, beautifully defined, very Taylor’s. Quite spicy, dried orange peel, cigar box, a touch of sandalwood. Gains perfume in the glass but after 30 minutes has gone back into its shell. The palate is full-bodied, very concentrated, more viscous than the 1912. Notes of ginger, apricot, fig, licorice. Lovely ripe orange-tinged finish that goes on and on. Very sensuous; beautiful poise on the fruit.’

Tuke Holdsworth, 1924

Vintage Port

Tuke Holdsworth was the brand name of the old shipper Hunt Roope & Teage, the former owners of Quinta da Eira Velha. The company was sold to Ferreira in 1956 but the quinta was retained by the family and from that point it supplied wines to Martinez and Cockburn.

Quinta da Eira Velha is one of the oldest estates in the Douro Valley. It is believed that vines have been cultivated at Eira Velha for over 600 years. The vineyard and buildings occupy a southeast-facing slope between 160 and 390 meters above the confluence of the Douro River with its tributary, the Pinhão River.

In 1893 it was purchased by the prominent Port wine merchant Cabel Roope.

Fonseca Port, 1922

Vintage Port, DOC Douro

Pale tawny brown at the core, fading to amber with olive highlights at the rim. Faultless nose, extraordinarily complex, with notes of cedar, tobacco and orange flower perfectly intertwined, a sumptuous mellow undertone of molasses and butterscotch and a halo of fresh, minty herbal scent. An hour after decanting, the wine opened up an exotic spice chest of nutmeg, black pepper, cumin and, tobacco, later joined by coffee, aromatic wood and dried rose petal. Dense, thick, almost treacly palate, holding the spirit firmly in place and underpinned by a crisp acidity. A luscious infusion of treacle and toffee lingering into the endless finish.
